Yes, I realised that. He was without doubt one of the best left backs around.

I think a case can also be made for Gerrard, Lampard, Rio and Terry. They were all among the best in the world at their positions, box-to-box midfielder and CB of their respective types. I don't think their successes can be attributed to just being fillers on teams where they were surrounded by talented foreigners, they were integral parts of successful teams. Rio and Terry formed one of the best CB partnerships around. England's problem was that no suitable partner was found for Gerrard or Lampard.

Ashley Cole was the guy i was talking about as our only real world class player in the so called " Golden Generation"

I always though Joe Cole was a wasted talent as he was rarely played in the position where he could control games, he had great technical ability, good pace, vision and good finisher yet forced to play wide.

Worse luck for England was that Ledley was always injured. I think along with the Chelsea rat faced Cnut and Cashley, he was the other world class player.

All bluster no brain players like those two were never really suited to international football, just like Henderson and Walcott now.

I remember one game against Russia in 2007, where Gerrard - being disciplined alongside Barry - looked like a proper international CM. But that was about it

Agree fully.

I'm not saying we haven't been mismanaged over the years, in fact, most/all England managers have made some shocking decisions over the years. But we overrate our players to such a degree that clubs pay £50m for a defender who is just potential at this stage and is far from the finished article.

Name a creative player in the side now? Henderson? Wheelchair? Dele Alli is very good at playing balls behind the defence from in and around the box, but I wouldn't describe him as an overly creative player.

Even if you go back to the so called "Golden generation", we never had a Xavi or a Pirlo or even a Modric type player. Lampard was a great goalscorer and Gerrard was one of the best box to box midfielders of his generation but neither could run a game like the players above I mentioned.

Time to bring in some ballplayers with brains like Mason and Huddlestone (and maybe even Winks in 12 months' time)

If you guys want a successful England team there would have be fundamental changes in current European football.
It is never going to happen, consequently international football will continue to die.

May in the end only be played at the olympics with the like of team GB.

It's the same old problem for England, it appears the manager has a brief to qualify for tournaments rather than produce a team. The same players who have played and failed to perform when it counts get picked. There isn't a big pool of players to pick from but if we can all see that Cahill, Walcott and Rooney cannot deliver at this level why are they in the squad? I've not seen enough of Rashford or Lingard to make a call but the latter does look well short of what is expected for international football. Henderson is a prime example of what the Premier League football produce for England, a good player if playing with better players, but his limitations are shown at this level. Until until one of the sky four can produce a creative midfield player we will continue to be a plodding outfit. This is unlikely to happen as few will take a chance on youth when they can buy off the shelf from around the world.

Ftfy
Because unless he's playing for one of those he will be ignored or at best played out of position.
Just ask Glenn.

Why do Germany, France and Italy continue to thrive in world football then?

It's just the lingering brawn over brains approach to English football that holds us back on that stage.

Have you watched France and Italy, Germany are no where near the team they were.

Spain are holding a level better than most.

International Football is on the wane. Has been for the last twenty years.

Probably be 101 teams in the next World Cup in Qatar

I agree, we lack technique but that is nothing new. We used to have players who had bags of it ( Hoddle, Currie, Hudson, Bowles etc) but they were ignored for the brawn over brains phalanx. Unless this changes ( from top to bottom in the England set up) we will keep on sacking managers while the players get a free ride.

Lampard had no brain!!! The guy averaged a goal every 2 1/2 games from midfield - that's world class numbers and he has won everything domestically

I agree that Henderson and walclam are poor players but to compare them to Lampard and Gerrard is comical

I must admit I never got the hate for Lampard, absolutely quality player for Chelsea.

brilliant player, I didn't understand the conversation, 10 x the player that the scouse prick was

of course Scholes was a another level up and criminally wasted by England, despite 3 great Sir Alex sides revolving around him the penny never dropped for England

Lampard was the better goalscorer, Gerrard however was the more gifted in terms of overall play.
