It's the same old problem for England, it appears the manager has a brief to qualify for tournaments rather than produce a team. The same players who have played and failed to perform when it counts get picked. There isn't a big pool of players to pick from but if we can all see that Cahill, Walcott and Rooney cannot deliver at this level why are they in the squad? I've not seen enough of Rashford or Lingard to make a call but the latter does look well short of what is expected for international football. Henderson is a prime example of what the Premier League football produce for England, a good player if playing with better players, but his limitations are shown at this level. Until English clubs can produce a creative midfield player we will continue to be a plodding outfit. This is unlikely to happen as few will take a chance on youth when they can buy off the shelf from around the world.

Might as well keep Southgate as the alternatives aren't much better.

We keep blaming and replacing managers when the real truth ( imo) is that a lot of English players are vastly over rated by their fans. We need a complete overall of our structure and until that is done we will bounce along like we have been doing for years.

I think we need to bring someone like Hoddle in to be over all our structure with a younger ( forward) looking manager like Howe under him.

Agree fully.

I'm not saying we haven't been mismanaged over the years, in fact, most/all England managers have made some shocking decisions over the years. But we overrate our players to such a degree that clubs pay £50m for a defender who is just potential at this stage and is far from the finished article.

Name a creative player in the side now? Henderson? Wheelchair? Dele Alli is very good at playing balls behind the defence from in and around the box, but I wouldn't describe him as an overly creative player.

Even if you go back to the so called "Golden generation", we never had a Xavi or a Pirlo or even a Modric type player. Lampard was a great goalscorer and Gerrard was one of the best box to box midfielders of his generation but neither could run a game like the players above I mentioned.

Would agree with all that, however i still believe that wheelchair has the ability to be the creative player ( if he can ever get/stay fit).

As for the so called "Golden Generation" they were probably some of the most overated players we have had in a England shirt ( imo) Cole was world class but as for the others not a chance.

Wheelchair is another for me that falls into the overrated category. Not denying he's talented, but his end product isn't good enough.

I can't stand Cole but have to agree he was one of the only world class players we had along with Gerrard and John Terry much as I hate to admit it.

Whether you rate wheelchair or not, he will never be fit for 3 games in a row, so absolutely cannot be discussed or considered.

Beckham was an excellent player; the guy that signed him for Real Madrid picked him as the outstanding player of all the galacticos he bought

Beckham is another that was overrated. He did however get the maximum out of what ability he did have and was a consummate professional.

I did say IF wheelchair could ever get and stay fit he would be the player, saying he would never be fit for three games in the future is guesswork.

As for Goldenballs a REAL great footballer once said of him " he can not head a ball" " he has no pace" " he has no left foot" " he can not tackle" " he can not dribble" but apart from that he is not a bad player.

And Cole had to play wide to accommodate the incompatible Gerrard/Lampard combo. Agree about wheelchair on both points, although that must not be said on this site.

George Best said that didn't he?
