That is my understanding too. For some bizarre reason, you have to have the choice when you first represent a country and he could only choose France when he played in their youth teams.

That squad is about right no? #givefatsamachance

Walcott? Henderson/Lallana?

Other issue is how is this team going to play?
- Like Pool, or Spurs or Leicester? because that's what your midfield setup options seem to be.

Dier/Drinkwater/Vardy (with players like Sturridge/Walcott/Sterling) could be a sit deeper and smash your opponent on the counter with stupid pace game (and might actually be legitimate for this squad)
Dier/Alli/Kane (more ala Spurs) requires a little more creativity than that squad appears to have (who plays the Eriksen/Lamela roles?)

Problem is, it will likely be a little bit of everything (some press, some counter, some possession) and that will equal a whole lot of nothing ...

Such a small/poor pool of talent to pick from, the role is so hard.

Sterling is being raved about because he is able to run in a straight line and finish balls put on a plate. Keegan had it right about him, he is the beneficiary of playing with top class players but he will not provide to England players what those Emirates Marketing Project players provide to him, and there lies the problem

No, how many Icelands/Leicester's/Greece's of the world do they need to be to prove it helps to have WC players, however subpar/brick results are not automatic if you don't.

The problem is England can never decide between playing best players or best team, and usually ends up with a bit of both, which is a whole lot of nothing.

Hence my earlier post, decide what options this pool of players allows you to play, then select the best suited for that particular tactic/system (even if it means you don't play certain players).

And the team, as announced a day ahead ....

Hart
Walker - Cahill - Stones - Rose
Dier - Henderson
Lallana - Rooney - Sterling
Kane
Presumably, Dele will be on the bench. Why, then, have him fronting the interview cycle ?

Possibly to help make him feel involved. He will want to start, but if he is being told that he is the future but Rooney is the captain and incumbent ahead of him, then the disappointment will be partially allayed.

As Rooney is captain he will play. I'd rather Alli off the bench than have him shoved to the left or worse having to play while Rooney is to the left. Let's hope gets his chances in his best position.

Spot on for me. Shoehorning players in was a real problem under Hodgson (and a few others). Playing Alli in any other position than just behind Kane was always going to be at best risky as it's really the only place he's really excelled and he's had a short career so far at the top level.

Well balanced team by Allardyce, as expected. He's a fat whining bastard, but a solid football manager.

Good to see Walker starting after coming off against Liverpool. Was worried that he might be out for a while.

And Dier fronted the Sky one, I'm guessing it's because the Spurs players are the only literate players in the squad, the rest can barely raise a grunt let alone a full sentence.
