I aint no Sheikh-but lets talk weather

Come on then Sheikh, tell us it's going to be a nice day on Sunday for the men's 100m final.

Our weather over the next 4/5 days will be influenced by a fairly weak low pressure system which is anchored off the atlantic coast of Ireland. It's ridging up against stubborn high pressure which is to our east over the continent. That is a recipe for disturbance and, in particular, thunderstorms.

Very favourable conditions - in fact almost identical to the other day - for thunderstorms to break out over most of central, southern and SE England over the weekend. By Sunday evening there could be a few showers lingering around, a breezy southerly but a pleasant 16c or so. It'll feel muggy though, rather humid and close and I doubt that's ideal for any new sprinting world records.

Beyond the weekend it's a slightly better picture. Still a little bit unsettled looks the favourite, but healthy ridge of high pressure kissing out shores ensuring some pleasant, sunny and warm at times weather. In short: classic August fair.

What exactly do you do Sheikh? What's your job title?

Nowt to do with the weather! I'm a commercial finance consultant. The weather stuff comes from having a CFD degree; I maintained an interest in it and did some research bits for the MetO after helping them with a contract they were putting together. My brain thrives on and has an insatiable appetite for rabid complexity, so weather kinda meets those needs! :D

...which is why you're on GG no doubt...

Some very high CAPE values popping up for the next 48hrs over the UK; if you like a thunderstorm, then they're likely to be pretty intense! As ever with thunderstorms, it's very hit-and-miss. Olympic Stadium IS in the firing line though over the weekend.

Also some growing potential showing up for a brief but potent little warm spell through the latter end of next week. We're only talking maybe 72hrs though, and the breakdown from the SW is likely to be very spectacular. That's a week away though, but definitely something to keep an eye on.

This thread won't be updated any more.

No reason given.

May as well lock it, but then some will still be able to post..

Sad.

:-$

What is a CFD degree? Computational Fluid Dynamics?

I check out this site http://www.meteociel.fr/modeles/ecmwf.php You can see the charts from the different models (ECM, GFS, UKMO etc) Looks like its another short lived warm spell. Its very humid outside here but no sunshine. Its the sunshine I really want so hot air is pretty useless.

I'm hopeless at reading charts like that. To help out a thicko like me, what does all that predict for next weekend in London for the Bank Holiday weekend?
Is that saying it will be a decent weekend, but temperatures not too high?

The models aren't in full agreement and it tends to be hit and miss a week away but all show it to be quite cool and GFS (American model) has a deep low moving across the country so wet and windy. I'll keep an eye on them and see what comes out in the next few days. Its bank holiday weekend so it will of course be wet, cold and windy :(

P.S. I ain't no Sheik and don't understand the science, haven't studied it but its something I'm interested in and I'm trying to learn and just get a few basics. Running a farm the weather is important.

Beautiful.............the holiday crowd have all gone home, the wind is light, the sun is out (all week!), the beach is uncrowded...........samphire later and the shore inn is back on thursday night........life is good.
