Winks has technical ability, not the question. What he lacks for me is two things
- Natural aggression (not in an treasure cave sort of way, just first instinct to get forward)
- IMO, he doesn't force the front players to make runs (I'll explain this)
Lots of folks ask why don't Son, Dele, Lucas, etc. make runs with Winks vs. Eriksen or N'dombele, chicken or egg?
The early game in the season where Eriksen was on the bench and made the instant impact coming on highlighted this (sorry can't remember which side). The front line had made very few runs, Eriksen came on and everyone starting making runs. People could say the front line wasn't making the runs for Winks to pass to prior.
I think that's the point, Eriksen, N'dombele and Lamela will make passes to where you are supposed to be, always. The players know this and make the run. Winks I think wants to confirm you made the run before he passes (most times), so it creates a sort of cycle. Again if you go back to that Eriksen sub performance (yes, one of the few good ones this season), he was spraying it around and pointing to where he wanted runs.
Winks is a likeable lad with a good talent level but with a fit N'dombele, Lo Celso and Lamela in the side (plus the fact he's never been able to play Sissoko's role), I can't see him being much more than a bench option.
