We have not been loyal to Winks? How? Spurs hasn't treated Winks well? How?
Spurs, the club, has treated Winks well. We, the fans, have not! (some of us, at least).
For the last two years there has been loud groans at best, outright chicanery at worst, everytime his name is on the teamsheet.
I get the frustration. I get the emotions when someone we had high hopes for doesn't live up to the promise from the get-go.
What I don't get is that someone actually think it is going to help to destroy whatever confidence the player in question may have left.
People talk about Kane "feeling the love" from the fans. Well, guess what, they can feel the other emotions also. And it may hurt. A lot.
The problem with Winks and some of the fans is that most of the critique is circumstancial, emotional and not based on facts or stats. (I'm not saying Winks have made no mistake, caused no goal against, or anything). But whenever Winks plays, he can outperform whoever he is playing alongside, but the haters will still say he was brick. He can outpass them, with the stats clearly showing mixed passing, through-passes and diagonal passes, the haters are still going to say "he just passes sideways and back, three yards."
I'm not shy of giving critique to players. But I try to base it on facts, not emotions. And usually the facts are not what is in the front of your mind 5 minutes after the final whistle.
Many a time I've been furious after a loss or poor performance, and I've taken to the keyboard like the best keyboard warrior out there. But I don't press send. Not untill the day after, or perhaps a few days after, when the emotions have simmered away, and allowed the facts to start to come to the surface.
Oh, and "Winks is brick, that's a fact" is not a fact. It is an opinion without the facts to back it up.
