I don't think it's effort

I think we got knocked out of the game we like to play (lots of possession, lots of passes, pulling opposition out of place), a style that has worked against very good teams (we generally still have possession even against the best teams), and we didn't know how to respond/counter.

Our players should respond with "ok, they are breaking up our game, they are wasting time, they are squeezing us quite effectively", we are not going to accept that (this is the fight/mental part vs. "effort"), lets do "x" for the next 10 minutes and get back control, then take from there.

This is the leadership part, this is a gap with the youth and nature of some of our players (famous clams quote here), if you take the West Ham example where Ange made the Sarr/Maddison shift, argument could have been made that Maddison should have seen the pattern and dropped himself back and left to create the same effect.

This side could do with an old/experienced/successful head in the group
But that's what is so annoying. Whenever a team changes things up....we turn into a bunch of clueless numptys and tend to have no answer for it (bar west ham) we all see we are getting trounced....and yet plod on

For me it’s almost at the point where he needs to rapidly improve dealing with set pieces or we need to find another keeper. I like him but it affects the confidence of the team when the keeper is nervous. He needs to clear a path when dealing with set pieces.

TBF to him, the goal didn’t come from him or his mistake. The deflection off Porro meant the save had to be made
I think it’s an example of the TV channels and media making out something that isn’t as bad as they want.
I believe arsenal have concede as many set piece goals as us know and they are the that use it more than anyone
It’s not comfortable watching as a fan sometimes I agree

My thoughts as well, anyone who takes what they say [ media, etc]is falling in the trap of believing in idiots on the mike having to justify their jobs. All keepers make mistakes and i honestly believe he makes just as many as most keepers do.

We concede so many from set pieces ..2 for season so far?
Our defense is so wide open .. conceded same as Arsenal & Emirates Marketing Project
Spurs fails to take their chances .. most goals scored in PL
So inconsistent, bad start, 3 points off 3rd, 2 points behind Arsenal
Win one, lose one .. 9 wins in our last 11 games

Honestly the narrative against the players, manager and club are fudging laughable at this point. Clearly if Ange just adapted these couple of things, we would walk the fudging title (if we are so brick and somehow still in with a shot at Europe)

It’s more about his general nervousness from set pieces, he’s not commanding at all, he’s the opposite. I get that he’s not a massive physical presence but he needs to be more dominant in the six yard box which all keepers should own. He rarely catches the ball from corners too, he opts to punch too much.

Looking at that goal, it seems to me that now Ange and his coaching staff have put one of the Spurs players in the 6-yard box with Venom, the opposition are now putting two. Udogie and Bents have no thought at all that they should ignore their coach's set piece routine and drop in. Be interesting to know what the specific plan to defend a corner is in our setup.

yeah true only 2 goals from set pieces
but we look susceptible defending every set piece so there is still something to work on

that said a lot comes down to refereeing. how can players get away with "seeking an unfair advantage off the ball" in ANY sport ?
it really feels like the epl refs have rigged the game. makes for damn good entertainment and fan engagement though.

At times last season every corner looked dangerous (more or less). I don't think that's been the case this season.

Some moments now in the recent games where we have looked too vulnerable again. That happens to just about everyone. Vicario certainly isn't elite level at this, and every keeper who isn't will have moments.

Does that become a negative spiral where we again look vulnerable at most corners or is he and the team able to shake that off and get back to what they're supposed to be doing.

I have to admit i hated how he shouted at Gray when Bailey skinned him one time when he came on. He seems to have a big voice for the young defenders but not the more senior ones.....

Am i being harsh here?

I noticed the same. In Hugo, we had the very best communicator in the GK fraternity. He was incredibly calm and reassuring for the defenders in front, even when his own GKing powers declined. He was the ultimate organiser of that defence and a proper leader, especially from set pieces. I've always said that Venom seems to lack that at this stage of his career although his other GKing attributes are top drawer.
