Gareth Bale

Re: Gareth Bale

I think thats a fair comment on Fergusson tbh - 2 CL in 27 years, for what is considered by many as the biggest club in the world, isn't exactly a great record.

Man United dwarfed everyone in England financially once the Sky tv/premier league windfall kicked in in the early 90s giving them a huge advantage domestically - but in Europe, up against similar financed Clubs they never had anywhere near the same dominence.

Still though he's probably the best domestic manager of the last quarter century.

It's a cup competition, Chelsea proved last season that the best team doesn't always win it, you just need a good draw or an incredible amount of luck. Even Barca didn't win it every season in their prime. Fergie reached 4 finals and numerous semif finals too. Bayern have only won it twice since the 70s, Arsenal never won it despite being one of the best teams in Europe for a 5-6 year stretch. Plus, it's hardly like United can outspend Barca and Madrid. Most of the best South Americans go to Spain as its the same language essentially. Madrid have outspent just about everybody in the last decade and they haven't won it since the early noughties. I think even Fergie would admit he could have won it more, but to knock someone for "only winning it twice" is preposterous. There's only one manager in the history of the game who's won the European cup more than twice.

Re: Gareth Bale

I guess it's the length of time at one club which takes the shine off his Euro record (for some). I agree that you don't rate someone on cup competitions - however i still feel that a more impressive European record would have probably put him head and shoulders above his peers.

Established supremacy in a tough league where he has won back the title from Leeds, Blackburn, Arsenal, Chelsea, Emirates Marketing Project, and seen off potential challengers in Saudi Sportswashing Machine and Liverpool, and to a lesser degree Everton and Spurs. In fact, he smashed Liverpool out of being a force... Perez can only dream about ending Barcas part in their duopoly.

La Liga is just a bigger budget version of the SPL pre-2012. Real or Barca winning it, yadda yadda yawn yawn. Not really a competitive league. Far greater challenge for Bale to go to United and replace Giggs, Bayern and turn them into a superclub, or stay at Spurs and take us up a level. Ten years at Real could bring 5 European Cups but he could be a huge part in a journey here that brings one.

There is a realistic chance that if stays he becomes the greatest and defining player of our history. Theres also a realistic chance that he goes to Spain and becomes another Steve McManaman. Most realistic? Yeah, that goes and has a couple of big trophies over the next three years before he is no longer flavour of the month and steps down to another CL club. Not a bad deal, but its not right to assume Madrid is some perfect move that cannot fail.

Re: Gareth Bale

Because he left us and went back to Emirates Marketing Project, he didn't go through pre-season with our new manager so he was effectively a new striker.

See, this is why i cba. It's clear as day to me that other teams had a 'Bale type figure' who helped them achieve what they wanted this season. For me to prove it to you would take hours as i'd have to search for or make the table. It's not worth the time.

In fact as you are the one that made the claim, surely you should be the one to prove it?

Adebayor a new signing? Sorry try again. Granted he didn't get the pre season match practice which is good for fitness at the start of the campaign, but does the pre season have any impact whatsoever on the results/performances of the team? I seem to remember we started the 08/09 season terribly, after a great pre season. Ok it's good to get some games in to learn the shape of the team, but the games are played at about 70% effort, unless you're Charlie Adam.

Re: Gareth Bale

Do any of you guys think Levy will make a statement soon???

I know he & bale are on hols....(not together unfortunatly lol)

The silence from whl is deafening........would love to know the ins/outs of this bt contract as well whether he has signed something to be their poster boy for at least a year???

A statement from levy/bale would go a long way.........is bale perhaps regretting his bt deal?????

either way I think everyday will bring new realms of vile from real madrid......yes we have a so called partnership with them but i would still like Levy to tell them to behave properly.

One thing I love is how we have gone about our business since arry (it was nice to be made aware of things but I am more proud of the way avb conducts himself.....much more proffesional.

If only we could start a radio show....call it spurca and we could roll off all the wonderful managers....players that have left madrid after being considered failures and gone on..................sneijder...........robben............

how many careers have they destroyed??????? rather than how many careers they have made?????????

screw you toadface and everything you stand for!

Re: Gareth Bale

No statement to make.

Bale's not expressed any sort of desire to move. Anything you read is pure speculation.

Re: Gareth Bale

Really looking forward to the "Bale commits to Spurs" headlines.

New 6 year, 150k / week contract (with a hefty loyalty bonus built-in). Press conference with Levy, AVB and Bale sitting next to each other smiling. Levy concedes that there is a £70m buy-out clause in the contract, but it can only be triggered from next summer onwards, and only if we fail to qualify for the Champions League. Bale telling the journos that he intends to win titles and trophies during his career, but he is confident he can do that at Tottenham Hotspur... his long-term home.

Then AVB chimes in... "Today we are talking about Gareth's decision to stay at Spurs, but I'd just like to add that I too have signed a long-term contract and look forward to picking up those titles and trophies alongside him. Tomorrow the chairman will make an announcement regarding the commencement of the stadium construction. And the day after that, I will be unveiling our two new strikers. I won't give you their names just yet... the only thing I can say is 'Blue and Yellow'... know what I mean?"

And then I woke up...

Re: Gareth Bale

look like the quotes the agent has already been on record as saying were taken out of context?

Used to follow Roy of the Rovers when I was a kid. Then I grew up and discovered the real world.

Re: Gareth Bale

Tottenham Hotspur will tell Gareth Bale he is not for sale to Real Madrid at any price

Tottenham Hotspur will tell Gareth Bale that he is not for sale at any price when the Wales international returns from holiday in the United States.

By Jason Burt

10:00PM BST 01 Jun 2013

The club will insist that they have no intention of accepting offers for the 23 year-old even if he does not agree to an improved contract, which will be offered to him during the discussions.

Real Madrid are urging Bale to submit a transfer request to try and push through a £60 million deal. However, the player would be reluctant to take such a step while an offer from Real would renege on a written promise they have given Spurs that they will not bid this summer.

There is a sense at Spurs that Real are attempting to prepare the ground for a move next year. Club president Fiorentino Pérez, who still hopes to hire Carlo Ancelotti as Jose Mourinho’s replacement, is under scrutiny with fans demanding a big signing.

The Spanish club have applied pressure on Tottenham all week, with Pérez saying that Bale “was born” to play for the club and Zinedine Zidane, who is set to be promoted to take care of the club’s transfers, praising the player. Bale’s agent, Jonathan Barnett, also appeared on Marca TV last week to express his willingness to listen to Real.

It could be that Real sign Liverpool’s Luis Suárez this year and then return for Bale. Although Liverpool are publicly insisting Suárez is not for sale, it is believed that an offer of more than £40 million could change their minds.

If Bale were to go it would be a huge blow for Spurs head coach Andre Villas-Boas, who is planning to sign Barcelona striker David Villa for about £10 million this summer.

Re: Gareth Bale

Real Madrid will go to world record £85m for Bale according to an article in the Sunday Times.

I think it will take more for us to sell. Fact is, there is no one 'available' in his league. But there are plenty of rich clubs. There has never been more money in football. Each year the millions go up. Despite the economic woes in Span etc, sugar dady clubs and new ways to exploit old content, mean football is cash rich.

But there are very few players of Bale's caliber. Every clubs wants them of course. Supply and demand.

For Bale - as an individual, a talent and as a commodity - I think he can happily stay at Spurs. He's still to develop, and to make such a big money move now, could be too much for him, too early. Imo.

Even if we took it, with that kind of money a £10m player becomes a £20m once we make a bid.

Left to me I simply would not sell him this summer COME WHAT MAY.

Re: Gareth Bale

No effing way would Real give us 85m. Crazy talk with elections coming up.

BUT that would afford us Bernard (LWF/CAM), Draxler (CAM/LAM), and Lamela (RWF) which would leave us sorted for years and years (IF we were able to attract them and wring out deals with their clubs, which is the hard point ofc). Not in Bale's caliber atm but young players with world-class potential and the ideal stylistic fit for our team - throw a striker in there and we'd be stronger as a whole.

It's what Dortmund, Ajax, Porto, even Man Utd do - selling for big money is not the problem, the key is getting the replacements right.

listen to this lady

infact, fudge it......if we are offered like 10 to 15 million short of a HUNDRED million for one player. guys seriously, i think selling is right up in our choices for that price.

infact i think we might even be able to get a better team together

Re: Gareth Bale

85m i'd take it though.
pay our boys a once off big fat bonus and see what it can do to their motivation.
use the rest to build the stadium asap.

Re: Gareth Bale

If you really think about it, with the kind of silly money being talked about if we sell, and the kind of superstar player we have in Bale should he stay...

...are we in a kind of win/win situation at the moment whatever happens? :-k
