Gareth Bale

Re: Gareth Bale

are people really trying to downplay the possible departure of Gareth Bale?

I read a few posts about how we got over the departure of Berbatov but we really didn't. I mean eventually we did but at the time we struggled very badly without him and faced had a relegation battle. Luka we were always going to be ok because that type of player is not a necessity in this league (i've said this for a very long time).

The potential loss of Bale would be absolutely devastating. People assume we're simply going to spend the cash on a few good players and everything will be fine but it doesn't exactly work like that. The last time we bought a load of new players and threw them all in the first X1 was the 08/09 season and it was an absolute disaster because you can't simply just buy a bunch of good players and except to play as a team from the jump.

Let's be honest here, there wasn't a team in this league that relied on a player like we did Bale last season. I feel without Bale we'd have barely scraped top 10.

Not really, it was this season and it didn't go that badly at all.

Liverpool relied on Suarez.. United relied on RVP.. the list goes on but i cba.

Re: Gareth Bale

I believe Arsenal relied heavily on van Persie 2011-12 season.

He scored 30 league goals and played every single match dragging them to third place in the league. Gareth Bale just about got past 20 league goals, how many assists did he get anyway?

Re: Gareth Bale

I obviously would want him to stay this summer and as long as possible, but in the event we do sell him to Madrid, part of me would like to see us hang onto him for another year even if we lose money just so it tinkles Madrid off that they can't have him when THEY want.

If you cba why did you reply?

Well no it wasn't this season actually. This season we had 3 new players thrown into the first X1 and (Lloris was given a long time to adjust to this league before being thrown in). In 08/09 we tried to throw in Gomes, modric, Bentley, Dos Santos, Pavlychenko and Corluka into the starting X1.

BTW do you think liverpool and united relied on those 2 players as much as we did Bale?

Dembele, Ade, Vertonghen, Siggurdsson/Dempsey.

Sounds like at least four to me, add Lloris and that's five.

I think Liverpool quite clearly relied on Suarez more than we relied on Bale. I cba to type it all out, because it's been proven so many times before yet you've managed to somehow miss it.

Table is from the premier league, however it does not include the final day of the season.

Re: Gareth Bale

Im not a fan of the 'take player X out of the team' debate - as it's entirely hypothetical.

Next season, without Bale, we would not be last seasons team only minus our best player - we would be last seasons team with several new additions in important positions. What if we sell Bale, buy two strikers who hit it off and score 30+ league goals between them? It's all nonsense really

Re: Gareth Bale

Why did you include Adebayor when he was our starting striker in the 11/12 season?

I'm sorry but i don't get what that table proves? to me it shows the percentage of team goals that the player has scored. Nothing about assists, nothing about winning goals, nothing about key passes.

Because he left us and went back to Emirates Marketing Project, he didn't go through pre-season with our new manager so he was effectively a new striker.

See, this is why i cba. It's clear as day to me that other teams had a 'Bale type figure' who helped them achieve what they wanted this season. For me to prove it to you would take hours as i'd have to search for or make the table. It's not worth the time.

In fact as you are the one that made the claim, surely you should be the one to prove it?

Then you simply didn't understand the point i was making then. It was to highlight that new signings that are not accustomed to how the team play (i.e. haven't played in our team before) take time to adjust and actually play as a unit..a team.

Of course other teams had 'Bale type figures'..who claimed otherwise? not every comment made on here has to be presented with evidence ffs. If however you claim the comment is inaccurate then backing it up with evidence would be good although again not essential. Anyway didn't you say the info about Suarez being more vital than Bale was proven on here numerous times? that's cool then..so how about you direct me to one of those numerous posts that "i somehow missed" and i will see it for myself.

Re: Gareth Bale

Liverpools league results without Suarez = P5 , W4, D1 L0 = 13 Points from 15

Our league results with Bale = P5 , W2 , D1 , L2 = 7 points from 15

Re: Gareth Bale

Suarez also lost possession about 200 times from failed attempts at dribbling. It's quite pointless looking at things this way.

I was asked to back up my statements with facts and i did, besides it's not pointless at all looking at the teams results when the player isn't playing (of course there's other factors too).

Personally speaking i think it was quite clear we relied on Bale more than they did Suarez. I mean look at our performances when he didn't play, usually pretty poor. Liverpool on the other hand played excellent without Suarez.

Re: Gareth Bale

Suarez doesn't suit Rodgers style of football in my opinion. It was no surprise to me when they looked better without him. In that sense, I don't think you can compare. Liverpool pass and move, look for little intricate passes and recycle the ball very well, we don't, in fact I don't know if any of our players know the meaning of pass and move. That is one thing I want AVB to press on in the summer, buying players who know how to pass and move and can find that pass that can split the defence because that's what we have missed most.

Re: Gareth Bale

As long as he's replaced with players AVB wants then I don't see us dropping from our current level. If he's replaced with Levy's "alternatives" then I'd be a little nervous but they've worked out for the most part.

Re: Gareth Bale

All I ask is that we know either way before pre-season begins.

We wont do it, but we should set a deadline sometime mid-July, maybe even July 1st. If he is staying all well and good, get a new contract signed and put an end to further speculation.
If he wants to sign for Real, or whoever, sort it, get the money in, and get in the replacements before the opening league game.
But we must not let it drag on into the new season.

Re: Gareth Bale

appologies..

spurs are so close to my heart but i guess its my way of coming to terms with something that when it happens will make me feel gutted.

I would like us as a club to push on every year with avb at the helm.

I dont want to spread gloom.... so I will ease up but I have tried to give my honest opinion about the situation and be realistic.

what do you want me to say 'that everything is rosy in the garden'?

I fear for us if bale leaves........more so i fear that most of the money goes to new stadium and we go backwards....

I dont want us to go backwards......I want us to hold onto Bale and attract more star players.

thc Steff is one of my fave posters as he is so positive but yes at the moment im hurting........im not even content with us finishing 4th.....I would like us to be the best we can be and I worry we wont be.

reasure me if you like.....perhaps I need it.

I would rather have Bale than 70-80 mil..........money in spurs coffers doesnt give me the same pleasure as watching bale for spurs does.

Can I just say, Nigeyman, that I find your posts wholly refreshing in their agendaless honesty, passion and openess? I do not agree with everything you say mate, but I love the way you say it. Top posting. Love your candor.

BTW, please don't worry, it will be fine this season at the very least...

AVB desperately wanted Moutinho and Willian, both cultured pass-and-move types; at Chelsea his list included Modric, Oscar and co. Our transfer committee decided to play moneyball though (or at least save some money) and went for direct goalscoring stats, without considering the context of those stats and the style of player we actually needed.

I'd hope we are more adventurous this summer. We are finally getting linked to a number of young players besides Leandro again, thankfully (Son, PEA, Eriksen, Pjanic, Rebic, Cornelius, Bernard etc) which is already a big change from the "Kenwyne Jones, Phil Neville" days.

Just watch us deadline-buy McCarthy though
