Gareth Bale

Re: Gareth Bale

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes PFA award voting system 'flawed'

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has criticised the "flawed" PFA Player of the Year voting system, claiming it is not a true reflection of the season.

Tottenham forward Gareth Bale scooped both the main award as well as the young player prize last month, before adding the Football Writers' honour as well.

For the prestigious FWA award, members could vote up to the result being confirmed, but players had to vote much earlier for the PFA prize - a system Ferdinand thinks needs an overhaul.

"The problem with the PFA awards is that the voting system is flawed," said the 34-year-old.

"There's so much technology at hand that you could do it over an iPad and just say 'bang, bang, bang' at the end of the season.

"I am not just being biased but if it was voted for today Robin van Persie would win it by a country mile.

"But it was voted for by the players in late February or March.

"Gareth Bale is a worthy winner, but for me it isn't a true reflection of the season."

He has a point, but it's not like football fans haven't discussed this for years.
And why didn't he voice his strong opinion on the matter three years ago, when Rooney won it, four years ago (Giggs) or five-six years ago (C.Ronaldo)? :-k

Sour grapes, Rio?

Re: Gareth Bale

If Gareth Bale scores tonight against Chelsea, he will equal Teddy Sheringham's Premier League record of 21 goals in a season.

Bale deserves it more than RVP.

I do wish someone would shut this fudging twunt up!

Re: Gareth Bale

Bale deserves it more than RVP.

Exactly, RVP has scored 25 playing for Utd the title winners where he gets 50 chances a game, Bale plays for a worse team and has to win most games on his own

Rio is a bell-end but we all know that

Reading this interview from The Mirror, he really doesnt sound like a player that is ready to pack his bags yet - even if it should miss out on CL

Gareth Bale interview: Spurs ace "can achieve my dreams with a thriller at the Lane"

Tottenham's treble Player of the Year winner is convinced his Champions League hopefuls are moving in the right direction

Gareth Bale doesn’t have to be told he is a man in demand.

When you have achieved the “golden treble” of individual awards, hailed as a “one-man team” and the next emerging force in football, the queue of contenders for your services is simply a list of the greatest clubs on the planet.

As Bale reflects on his life at Tottenham, speaks about his bond with Andre Villas-Boas and the White Hart Lane club's dressing room and talks about the future of Spurs, their latest escape act, at Chelsea on Wednesday, means the hunt for a Champions League place goes into the final week, their hopes still alive.

The player, who is new Premier League broadcaster BT Sport’s main advertising weapon, is clearly content with life at Spurs.

“The club has grown every year, we've become a better team and I’ve hopefully become a better player every year,” he said.

“We’ve had a taste of Champions League football and that’s where we want to be again. That’s where the club needs to be to get to the next level and what we’ve been trying to do this season to lift the club to better things.

“Since I came here, everything has changed. When I first arrived there was talk of a new training ground and a new stadium. As the years have gone in, it’s got better and better.

“The training ground has happened and next it’ll be the stadium. The club is growing and I think it’s growing within its own means.

“At the end of the day, I want to play at the highest level possible and be playing against the best teams in the world.

“The club is going in the right direction. All our objectives are the same, we just have to try and achieve them now.”

Missing out on that prime target would, as Bale conceded, be a “disappointment”.

That taste of the Champions League - when Harry Redknapp’s side reached the last eight and his astonishing displays against Inter Milan brought him global recognition for the first time - is one he wants to repeat.

But where Redknapp brought Bale so far, it seems that his successor, Villas-Boas, has taken the Welshman to the next dimension.

Many of the 25 goals that brought him the PFA's Player and Young Player of the Year awards and Footballer of the Year honours from the Football Writers Association, are a direct result of him being switched to a central role.

Bale added: “Obviously, the older you get the more comfortable you get speaking to the manager.

“When you’re younger, you’re quite daunted by the manager. As I’ve got older, I’ve also got a lot closer and become a more important player so you speak to the manager more.

“All the managers have been great with me and in progressing my career. This year I’ve been handed a lot more responsibility, which has been great.

“I believe I’ve been able to motivate myself and make myself a better player by it.

“Every season I’ve improved on the season before. It’s just another natural progression. I’m on an upward slope and I hopefully I can keep improving. I’ve just started a new position and there’s still a lot to be learned there.

“That means scoring MORE goals. More with my right, more with my left. That’s the target for even the best players. If you look at Messi, he scores more goals than he has any other year. Ronaldo is the same.

“There is still plenty more to improve. I just have to keep my focus at this level and take it up further.”

He added: “The club is bringing in better players every season. We’re all of a similar age, around our mid-20s.

“We’ve got a good, firm base, which is always important for a club like Tottenham and I’m sure we’ll bring a few more players in this summer.

“We’re heading in the right direction. Hopefully there is still a lot more to come.”

Re: Gareth Bale

That's really nice to read.

I hope he believes that he can give us a few more years and STILL be in his prime if he did wish for a move.

He's right though. Every year since he's been with us we have progressed on the pitch and with the development of the club itself.

He seems like he's get a level head in regard to knowing that it is players like him that will get us there! [-o<
