Europa League 2012-13 - QF: Basel (SUI)

I'm pretty sure this is wrong - but UEFA's website has us starting in the play-off round, Saudi Sportswashing Machine in the 3rd qualifying round and Liverpool starting at the group stage.

UEFA said:
European places
Emirates Marketing Project FC ÔÇô UEFA Champions League group stage
Manchester United FC ÔÇô UEFA Champions League group stage
Arsenal FC ÔÇô UEFA Champions League group stage
Chelsea FC ÔÇô UEFA Champions League group stage
Tottenham Hotspur FC ÔÇô UEFA Europa League play-off round
Saudi Sportswashing Machine FC ÔÇô UEFA Europa League third qualifying round
Liverpool FC ÔÇô UEFA Europa League group stage

Why would it be wrong, mate?

We finished 5th essentially?

Before the CL final, qualification for EL would have been Chelsea - group stage (as FA Cup winners), Saudi Sportswashing Machine - play off (from league position) and Liverpool - 3QR (as League Cup winners). As a result of Chelsea winning the CL the rules say we are moved into the EL into the latest possible round where there is a vacancy. That will be the group stage into the spot left empty by Chelsea.

Could be wrong - but I think everyone plays a EL play-off round and only then are the group stages decided upon?

EDIT: Apparently not!

2nd EDIT: We essentially swapped places with Cheslea so we go straight into the group stages?

It's changed for next season. The national cup winner (or highest placed league entrant if the cup winner qualifies for CL) of the top 6 countries plus the EL winners get direct entry to the group stage.

Simple answer: Yes.
Long answer: If Chelsea had won the League Cup and Liverpool had won the FA Cup, I don't think we'd have swapped with Chelsea and gone into 3QR. The rules say we go into the latest possible round where there is a vacancy and I think UEFA would have found a vacancy at least in the play-off maybe in the group stage.

so it's changed from last year where everyone played a knock out tie before going in to the group stage? that's handy

The regulations for the coming season has not yet been published by UEFA, but on wikipedia they are using the following:

Title holder
6 domestic cup winners from associations 1–6
31 winners from the play-off round
10 losers from the Champions League play-off round

Playoff Round:

9 domestic cup winners from associations 7–15
3 domestic league third-placed teams from associations 7–9
3 domestic league fourth-placed teams from associations 4–6
3 domestic league fifth-placed teams from associations 1–3
29 winners from the third qualifying round
15 losers from the Champions League third qualifying round

Third Qualifying Round:

3 domestic cup winners from associations 16–18
6 domestic league third-placed teams from associations 10–15
3 domestic league fourth-placed teams from associations 7–9
3 domestic league fifth-placed teams from associations 4–6 (League Cup winners for France)
3 domestic league sixth-placed teams from associations 1–3 (League Cup winners for England)
40 winners from the second qualifying round

As a number of posters have said

- It's about time the club got accustomed to the demands playing in Europe creates (it's our 6th run? and we want CL)
- Livermore, Parker, Dawson, Vert, JD (or whoever new striker), Caulker, number of young players could get a lot of games
- Get out of the group stages with young team, once QF/SF stages, put out stronger team.

Lot depends on the draw, easy run to SF, then I'd be for full stregth team to win from SF on.

That's what we tried to do last season!

It could be fun playing Inter again.

Presuming we get him, a chance for Remy to match up against his old club as well maybe...

Looking positively, there could be some great games to come in the EL next season!

We won't get them in our group as they'd be amongst the top seeded teams but beyond that it can be very much a possibility
