Emerson Royal

A) in Conte's system, RWB and LWB are our two most important positions, by far, so obviously he gets scrutiny.
B) Our forwards get a lot of leeway because they've bailed us out countless times before. Has Emerson done so enough by comparison?
C) 'Playing out of position' is a stretch. Doherty was a right wing-back playing left wing-back, on his weaker side, for weeks - that's what I'd call playing out of position. Emerson being moved forward slightly from right full-back to right wing-back is not 'playing out of position', come on.

Scrutiny and criticism are not the same.
Doesn't matter how bad he was today, he was not the reason for the defeat or the performance.

Ah credit in the bank for good days, well what about all the crap days?
All the days they didn't turn up?

Yeah, but look at those two maps that @SteveAWOL attached. Doherty had a) passes forward, and b) crosses into the box. Against the same opponents. Away.

Emerson didn't have a *single* pass forward, the *entire* game. And zero crosses.

He's not getting roasted unfairly, these are absolute basics for a wing-back.
He's a terrible WB I agree. Sadly he was bought for a back 4 but is being played in a role he doesn't suit at all. Gonna just have to struggle through to the end of the season.

Seemed a strange signing at the time, as NES likes flying wing-backs too so why did we sign such a defensively minded right full-back

Hopefully Paratici will rectify this mistake in the summer.

He wasn't, Conte was. But he's a big reason for it, imo. Our tactics (or tactic, to put it more accurately) relies on there being someone better than Emerson in that role. No way around it.

Sure, they get criticism for that, but because they've delivered in the past, it's less pronounced, since we know they can do better. With Emerson, there's absolutely nothing to date that says he can get better. Surely that's reasonable?

Royal has not been here that long so not really fair to compare credit in the bank.

Well, he's been here longer than Bentancur and Kulusevski, neither of whom are getting much criticism - in part because they already have credit in the bank, no?

Kulu and Bentancur were no better or worse than anyone else today and yet there were calls for them to be taken off before half time. Both have been pivotal to our up swing, didn't seem to matter though.

I honestly thought he did pretty well defensively today and we did fudge all going forward which wasn't really on him. Can't believe he's getting slaughtered on here.

If Romero and Dier were on commission today for passes to each other, they'd be driving out the stadium with a boot full of cash. But again, I don't blame them too much, Potter shut down our midfield, which isolated the front three and starved them of ball and Conte had no answer.

Eh. Kulu was worse than Son (marginally), not as bad as Kane. Bentancur looked pretty impotent after his yellow. But I think anyone asking for either to be taken off wasn't doing it from a quality standpoint, but more because a) Bentancur was on a yellow and as a DM, might not have been needed for a more attacking approach, and b) Kulu was on a yellow and could have been sent off given he evidently didn't like the attention he was getting from Cucurella.

I mean, we had Winks on the bench to bring on for Bentancur - how the hell anyone could think taking him off was a good thing when *that* was our replacement was beyond me. Winks is a guaranteed loss.

If the midfield is shut down then it needs the WBs to provide more in an attacking sense. They are vital to Contes system.
Emerson done fine defensively, but he's not really a WB and gives nothing going forward.

Yeah that's a fair argument. Reggie on the other side offered very little too. Getting a bit disillusioned with him. For a lad I thought could be the best in the league, he looks very average.

Agree with Bentancur and the card, but kulu i think would be unlikely to be sent off.

Good WBs are often failed wingers/attackers or at least wider midfielders. Rarely are they modified fullbacks because really the role requires attributes of a midfielder largely.

If we are struggling in midfield, even the quality of WB we have Conte should probably adjust somewhat. He can't just expect Royal and Reggie to just become the level of WB he requires it doesn't brick their attributes. We needed to help the midfield by adding an extra body.

Best in the league LB maybe. But WB is a very different role. Did you think he would be a great WB? And why?

I thought he'd be a good WB. He gets forward, but seems to be in too much of a rush and panics a bit. I thought with experience that he'd calm down when in and around the box.
Unfortunately that hasn't happened and is seen in the amount of great chances he's had this season that he's wasted.

I did actually. He has pace and seems to like attacking. But he just flatters to deceive a lot of the time. Today he did diddly squat but
countless times in recent months he's gotten into great positions and messed them up.

Even today, the one where PEH showed some brilliant skill and pulled the ball across goal... if Reggie is proper anticipating that, its a goal.

He also underwhelmed at LB.

In all honesty I don't think from where peh is you can really predict where that ball is going.

Will need to watch it back. I genuinely thought Reggie could have been more alert but maybe I'm being harsh. Brilliant bit of skill by PEH to be fair. Probably the best thing we did today.

There were that many players between peh and the back post an og was probably more of a possibility than reggie scoring imo
