Emerson Royal

But he defends very well which is something you also need, especially with under lapping CBs

Yes, the word "also" being paramount. One or the other is not enough. It's "wing back" for a reason. Winger and full back, all in one, really demanding, really difficult, extremely important. But both, always both.

To me Emerson looks excellent at the back part of the role, wouldn't play him as a winger though would you?

Sessegnon has played as a winger. Reguilon I could see doing alright as a traditional winger in the right system (though obviously wouldn't be his best position). The famous example of Moses at Chelsea. That's the standard for the wing part of the role imo.

If we're to really push on, take another step after the one we're hopefully in the middle of making now, the demands of the player in the wing back roles is very high when attacking.

I'm sceptical of Emerson delivering on those demands. Would love to be proven wrong. Very good player either way though, been a super useful signing for us already.

He is 22 and halfway through his first season here on his second manager
The guy needs time and as you say he has been useful
I think he could play RCB actually as he wins headers and times his tackles well generally

That's all true.

I also think it's true that 22 year olds rarely take big steps in terms of quality on the ball. Very rare to see someone not very good at crossing or dribbling at that age getting really good at it.

Robertson did when he joined pool
He wasn’t the player at Hull he is now
I think it’s not uncommon for full backs to improve their attacking player or vice versa
We had two in rose abs Walker that changed their games too after that age (rose never played full back until he joined Sunderland)

I really believe this is the main point about how good/poor he may be as an attacking option. IMO its far to early to say if he will be good or not so good at that job. Kid in a different country trying to get used to playing in a different way is never easy and again in my opinion the signs are good so far.

Didn't watch Robertson enough before Liverpool to know. How was his ball striking technique before joining Liverpool?

Rose, as you say, was a winger. Changed his game, but didn't drastically improve his technical ability, ball striking, dribbling.

Walker was never great on the ball, was never a great crosser. Never became one. Attacking impact mainly from extreme physical ability. That was already there, refined perhaps. Technically improved, but not by leaps and bounds.

Players can improve, but big changes at that age in technical ability is very rare. Can become more effective, more consistent, use their skills better, definitely.

Well Walker and rose were the what in the league despite the flaws you have raised

As I've been saying, because they had other standout strengths. What's Emerson's best attacking qualities that he can further refine to become really outstanding at it?

Or will he have to go from average (for a PL level wing back) to great at something?

His crossing is very good when he uses it. Id argue already better than Walkers and Rose. His timing of the cross and when to use it could be improved upon. His finding of free space (already pretty decent Imo) could be improved upon giving his crossing even more chance of hitting the mark.

Haven't been as impressed as you by his crossing. If he can become a standout crosser by PL standards then he would become amazing.

Agreed that he's good at finding space, often find himself in rather good positions through combination play and movement. For me we need more after that. Either someone truly dangerous one vs one or ball striking technique in terms of crossing/passing.

With his stamina, height and physical presence perhaps he could become a real threat in the box when we attack down the left?

No idea if he will but I feel like he could start taking up some more dangerous positions when we attack down the left. He's had at least one goal bound shot so far which isnt a lot admittedly but a decent sign that he can find the space and has a decent instincts. He's deffo a defender first before an attacker. With some time learning this new role he may become what we need exactly. I suppose time will tell but I don't find him to be one of the problems.

I also think finding a RWB with all of those attacking qualities along with Emerson impressive defensive game is going to very, very difficult. Someone like TAA who is an awesome attacking threat is pretty pony when asked to defend and yes the system we play should mitigate that to some degree, but Conte isnt quite as gung-ho as Klopp so I don't know if he would ever want a player as purely attacking orientated as TAA. I imagine and expectant he would want more balance, which as I said I think will be very difficult to find.

Maybe instead we go for the flip side of Emerson, stronger offensively than defensively and select for matches according to needs?

Agree that finding someone that can do both will be really difficult. Two options with different qualities would be very good in my book.

Wing backs in a back three/five are often more defenders than wingers. Fairly defensive wing backs are quite common. I think Conte's 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 is something of an anomaly in that regard. True wing backs. Actually makes sense to include the wing backs in the midfield in a numerical formation description like above while with many it's a back 5 first and foremost.

Find myself missing Aurier at times, it's not a comfortable feeling. We need a squad where we don't miss Aurier.

Keeping Aurier with this system in mind would have been better than keeping Doherty. Obviously their is the lack of interest in Doherty that made that a difficult move to make.

And Aurier being desperate to leave by all accounts.

I just don't want to miss him, he was good, but not good enough that we should miss him.

There was also no interest in Aurier so we took the cheapest option

This guy can't dribble, cross or shoot. He isn't that great defensively either. Still better than Doherty though.

He's young and has potential, and as a young player will have poor periods. We do need a credible second option like we have on the left. Might be that we sell Emerson in a couple years, but lets see how he develops

He can develop în training and în first rounds of cups all he wants, we need a starter this transfer period. Problem is that we have so many positions we need new players în, that a RWB might not be the priority.
