Dempsey

Re: Welcome Dempsey!

I think we need an old head like Parker in the team right now just to calm things down a bit. Sandro will be better in the long run I've no doubt, but I wouldn't mind seeing Parker line out in the next match.
Any word on his injury?

Re: Welcome Dempsey!

Clint Dempsey to wear number 2... call me old fashioned but that just doesn't sit right with me for a forward!

Ossie Ardiles wore Argentina's number two shirt for the 1978 FIFA World Cup Finals.

And he wore their number one shirt for the 1982 FIFA World Cup Finals.

Now that's strange!

Re: Welcome Dempsey!

He looked rusty as fudge last night. Played the whole game but his touch let him down constantly.

That just about summed up his entertainment value for me last night.

Re: Welcome Dempsey!

^ He did look a bit rusty but he also had some very good moments especially in the first half. I think sometimes he is let down by his teammates when playing with our national team too because he is so far superior in his thinking ahead of the game

True, just needs to keep it simple sometimes. But I'm glad he got game time because he needed it. He also dropped deep a bit too often, a bit like VdV would do, probably knowing that he was one of the few players that could bring the ball forward into dangerous positions. The possession in that game was ridiculous, 79-21 at the end of the first half.

Is Dempsey the white Piennar?

I only hope we can sell him back to fulham in a seasons time for a profit.

Of course i may have jumped the gun and look a fool, i hope so. Always thought it was best to react quick, ship the lad out he is not right for us.

GHod we are an ugly team now, almost like watching liverpool of last season. Always had a soft spot for bobby im glad he got his goal just hope we can get a couple.

Does anyone like Dempsey on here? was surprised when i came back to find we had signed him.

Re: Is Dempsey the white Piennar?

thread starter is fishing...............you took the bait.

well he just scored but i got to say i think he is playing badly and i hope we can get some money back for him, would so much have preferred berbatov back then that crap dempsey, going to be a long season watching this crap.

PS i like to think by tempting fate i had some part to play in the goal.

Re: Welcome Dempsey!

I think Dempsey deserves a bit of credit for result yesterday.

When he was moved into the centre he really did give us an option to play that longer ball with a bit of success, where Defoe kept losing every header (as expected, not blaming him) Dempsey put himself about and created problems for them in the second half.

Having someone like that around for when our buildup play isn't up to scratch is very helpful. When Ade returns it should give us another option to go long to if need be.

Thought he did some other things well also, but his physical presence and toughness did help.

I like him, I suggested in a post a good few years ago that we could do worse than signing Parker and Dempsey during a time that we lacked any bite or control in the centre of the park, funny how things work out.

Dempsey is a strong player, I always think of him as sharing some characteristics with Kevin Davies. He'll never be popular with everyone but he is strong and when he is working properly in the correct position he will not allow our team to be bullied. There are a few players that are considered by a lot of fans to be journeymen that I personally always dread coming up against and those include Dempsey, Davies and Yakubu. Each one seems to have an uncanny ability to completely fudging ruin my afternoon.

I don't see him as a given starter by any means, but I'm happy to have him in the squad, he's an agitator and could be a better option than Defoe in more physical matches.

Re: Welcome Dempsey!

Would like to see him make a substitute appearance against Carlisle then start in the centre alongside Defoe at Old Trafford. Away from home we'll need an extra man in midfield, but also somebody who can provide a physical presence in attack alongside Defoe. We have two fantastic wingers in Bale and Lennon and it's infuriating when they get the ball out wide in dangerous areas and they only have one person to aim at who's half the size of the several players marking him.

Tottenham can do 'something special' this season - Dempsey

With four straight Premier League wins, Spurs have climbed to fifth in the table and the USA international believes consistency will bring a hugely successful campaign

Clint Dempsey is confident Tottenham can have a successful season as long as they can maintain their run of fine form.

Andre Villas-Boas endured a tough start to life in charge at White Hart Lane, failing to register a win in his first five games in charge, but Spurs’ fortunes have turned around with four straight Premier League victories.

Dempsey scored in Tottenham’s dramatic 3-2 win at Manchester United in September, and believes consistency will be the key to any success.

“It’s been good, we’re happy with the results we’ve been getting and the run of form that we’re on, although we’re still trying to put together two strong halves,” the 29-year-old told London 24.

“The fans are used to seeing good football and seeing the positive results, and it’s our job to give that to them because we have the quality to do it.

“I think we’re showing that and we are getting results, but we’ve got to keep it going. It’s not just about a few games, it’s about a whole season being consistent and that’s what we’re working on.

“We’re in fifth place right now, trying to get more points, and trying to finish as high as possible. We’re in a good position and if we get the right type of results we can find ourselves going even higher than that.

“We’ll have to see as the season goes on what level we are really at, but I think we have the quality to do something special.”

Spurs’ next big test comes after the international break when they host league leaders Chelsea on October 20, and Dempsey is confident they can keep their run going.

“We know that we can get results against the top teams away from home, like we did against United,” he added.

“I think we showed a lot of character in the second half of that game to grind out a result, and it will be no different when we play Chelsea here in our next game at home.

“We’ll all be up for it and want to get the job done.”
