Davinson Sanchez

Time to cut our losses on him and Dier next summer. We don’t want to be like Arsenal or Man U and just keep around substandard CBs for years and years. We want to be more like Liverpool and grab a great one.

Snodgrass was “clever” against Aurier to win the free kick that ultimately led to the 3rd goal.

I dont think he was clever personally, more like the ref is a fudging useless clam.

The scenario from my memory was much the same as what happened against everton and Saudi Sportswashing Machine, in that our player was getting tight and keeping the opposition player occupied and then they just throw themselves on the floor and inexplicably the ref just immediately blows his whistle without thought.

If our player bundles into the opposition player and or tries to get the ball and in doing so kicks the other players legs, then yes thats a foul. But this didnt happen and actually it should be a free kick to us and a booking to them for what is essentially diving.

The way refs fall for this scenario is my third serious annoyance with the modern game along with zooming in/drawing lines for offsides and the new handball law.

Refs and lawmakers really are the vermin of this sport.

Don’t forget Jan and Toby had years of experience together TBF to a rare and unique scale

Totally get that, it was a very rare phenom. It was more about feeling secure with the player(s) in position, like Davies at LB - never have any concerns about him performing his primary job well, the other facets of his game maybe need improvement. With Sanchez I haven't had that comfort and he's been here a while now.

It’s because he isn’t as a good as them
TBF Sanchez is as good as most CBS in ten division, but not as good as the very best ones
He is IMO for example no worse than the Everton ones but their pair are playing every game and playing really really well

Yerri Mina (fair comparison) is better than Sanchez, likewise Keane - stats back that up (not just from this season either). It's not that I don't rate him, but it's like he's perpetually caught in a flux of potential - like a kernal that doesn't quite pop!

I guess it's down to opinions, and I respect yours.

I wouldn't be sad to see Tanganga given a run out at CB alongside Toby. Be interesting to see how Rodon comes in as well - again, looks like he has the tools.

I don’t think there any better myself, but they have had more games together I believe. Both have Stepped up this season so far and been very impressive
You need a pairing and a balance at CB, which is a huge issue for us as we move players around there

Indeed, and on top of that they were both great players and were the perfect partnership. I have a feeling that if we as fans try to compere who we play now/ in the future to either of those ( at their best) we are going to be disapointed. Pairings as good as they were do not come along very often.

Indeed. Let's see where we are when we can play a pair that includes a player who prefers playing on the right and one who prefers playing on the left..... Dier and Rodon perhaps? Up until now we are shoehorning one of our centre halves over the left when they're not suited to playing there. Of them all Dier is probably the least bad on the left but I'd like to see him playing on his preferred side before judging whether he is good enough to play for a team with our ambitions or not.

I think it is quite clear though that our next signing (be it January or the Summer) does need to be another centre half who prefers playing on the left, we can sacrifice Toby or Sanchez to bring them in and then have two for the left, two for the right and third cover from Davies/Tanganga for the left/right position.

I can't dance with any of that, i know there are a few on here who do not rate Dier but i think he is our best CB, never seen Rodon so not sure what side he is stronger on. I think it may be a mistake to rush Rodon into a regular starter though just yet but who knows he could settle in quickly.

To be honest i can not see Toby being a regular anymore ( at least i hope so) he is not good enough anymore imo and i must say i am dissapointed in the progress of Sanchez and thought he may have pushed on by now ( still fairly young for a CB though) so Jose may still keep him.

Rodon is right footed but has typically played on the left side of the two at the back.

Biggest waste of money per million by Spurs ever when you factor in the selling fee?
43m and we would be lucky to get 15m for him right now.

He was terrible yesterday but I think he is normally a decent defender, strong, quick and tackles well. That is probably why we bought him, because he could recover quickly if our high line was breached. Unfortunately he’s lacking a football brain. But with a decent partner beside him, he will be fine.

I’m far from Sanchez’s biggest fan but I thought he was OK yesterday. I put very little blame on him for the OG.

I thought he defended Antonio and Bowen pretty well overall and aside from a few standard poor passes did alright.

if he had been marking their first goal scorer instead of Sissoko then they wouldn’t have scored there....

I agree that he's quick. He's reasonably good in the tackle too, but a bit rash at times. Can't say the penalty against Manchester United, the free kick early on against West Ham for example came as a surprise.

Not that sure on strength. Compared to players we have in other positions, sure. But compared to PL centre backs in general I'm not so sure. He uses his strength well against opponents that are weaker than him, but he often struggles against big strong strikers.

Other than pace, arguably tackling and strength what are the attributes he has that stand out? Marking?

I always worry whenever I see this. Not really a ringing endorsement when people say “this player will be fine if you put someone good next to him”

TBF it’s not unusual
The only real high end I can remember in recent years are Chelsea a with Cahill/terry and Terry/Carvalho. You had Vidic and Ferdinand at United. The famous arsenal defence did alternate slightly but was consistent and a real pairing whoever played. And we had Verts and Toby
Certainly recently thee has been a Kompany or VVD leading an inferior CB alongside them

Looks like he’s Jose’s chosen one this week.

Confirmed he’s playing on Thursday and doing the press conference. Then made a joke about his goal on Sunday.

In AoN he came across as quite young, only just 24, hopefully we can find a way for him to step up a level.

This is inherently the problem, we can't say both CBs played well in a game we conceded 3 goals in 10 minutes. Clearly they were either making mistakes or not leading the line properly and organising players etc and this isn't the first time either. We haven't kept one clean sheet in any competition all season - that's a shocking stat in itself. Things need to tighten up, opponents know they will always score. If we can cut that out then when you get a lead teams heads will start to drop.
