Read an interview with Villa in the Guardian years ago. Was really impressed with how he came off, a lack of ego with no interest in fame. Like Scholes but without the shyness, just a complete disinterest.

Who is Adam Suter?

Spain seem good at developing level headed, well balanced professionals in addition to developing some of the best players in the world. Sure some of them are cynical cheats that will do just about anything to win on the pitch, but a lot of true professionals it seems.

I hope we as a club at least can find a way to make sure our youngsters develop in a similar fashion.

The word a couple pages back is that the fee is very low because he is due a big payout from Barca if he enters the last year of his contract.

in which case that would make alot more sense

Levy wont pay big money or even 10 million for a guy like Villa and his parameters. i dont see it happening.

he would have to come on cheap. i dare say even if he comes on cheap hiswages has to be affordable.

Also makes me laugh when people say Villa isn't a Levy signing. Levy has long known that signing older players/injury prone players/players falling out with their clubs is a great way to improve squad quality/plug gaps on a limited budget:

Sheringham
Poyet
Zeige
Redknapp
Naybet
Costa
Gallas
Van der Vaart

All fall into this category to an extent

do you mind putting the prices on those fellas too. and although this would be a major ball ache so no need if you cant be arsed...their alleged wages too. I think we will see a pattern. And thats without looking into the ages of the rest of the team

not to mention a company's model is never really known until they become established. i wouldnt take the growing years into account...but just so that the discussion is broadened then i guess thats fine.

IMO levy wont commit relatively big money and big wages on a downward curved , injury prone, post 31 year old. It doesnt make sense to me unless we are actively doing barca a favour and the price is in a lower ball park. certainly not double figure millions

Do you think it's all just media speculation and we're not after him? Or do you think we're going in with some real low ball offers hoping to drag it out until Barca (and Villa) cave?

i think we are low balling them , and i dont think Villa is actually the main priority either. I think there is someone else but possibly not available or is too expensive i dont know. but no way is levy haggling big money over villa as his main target...i;m sure for the right price "he'll do" as a stop gap.....but this whole thing smells fishy

We'll close the deal by Friday. I think we want both Paulinho and David Villa for the kit launch.

Paulinho talked about missing the Corinthians game on Wednesday, as he's carrying our contractual obligations for us and I assume that must refer to the new kit launch.

Can't really be bothered doing all the research 2bh, but they were all relatively low fees or free transfers. I think VDV was the most expensive both in terms of fee and wages, but not too expensive given his talent and that he was also the youngest when he joined at 27.

But they weren't probably massively expensive deals. That's kind of my point in that relative to talent, the deals done for older players are cheaper. Yes, they don't have resale value, but I think my point was if we can do the deal on good terms, Levy will be all for it (for Villa that is).

I think Barca will want his wages off the books given he's unlikely to get much game time next year following Neymar's arrival. I think they're also obliged to give him a brick-load of loyalty bonuses if he stays next year. Overall, i think it's set up for Levy doing a special deal on the fee & wages like he did with Ade.

Since breaking into Sporting's 1st team, Villa's played 12 full seasons and only once played less than 40 games in that period. He's averaged 42 games a season in that period.

I would add Davids to that list as well, who I'm sure was not on insubstantial wages.

That guy who claims to be ITK, Neil Easton, reckons Villa will be done by Thursday. My bet is Villa still isnt a spurs player a week on thursday.....

Scott Parker is the most obvious comparison. We were willing to make him one of our best paid players and pay around £5m for him. And give him a 4 year contract!

David Villa will probably cost more, but there's talk in the media that £8m-ish might get it done. He will be on significantly bigger wages too, but with the tv-money and overall increased revenue it probably won't be an unheard of amount.

Another difference of course being that David Villa is a superstar, and I can see us extending ourselves just a little bit further for him than we did for Scott Parker.

I reckon its to do with being registered for the Copa and the imaging rights this activates. A bit like being cup tied

long way from Brazil to England by helicopter......why didnt he take a plane like a normal person

VDV doesn't belong in that group. He was in his prime and when you look at his league games record he wasn't injury prone either.

Sheringham, Poyet and Naybet were years ago. Redknapp and Ziege in their late 20's and also years ago. I can't even recall Costa, but I am getting old and my brain is addled. Do you mean Rocha (who was about 27/28 when we signed him), because I don't regard him as old or injury prone. For a centre half he was in his prime.

So out of your entire list I'd say the one that supports your theory is Gallas, but I would also suggest that Gallas is the exception and not the rule.

Don't think Levy has had anything against older players,
what's new if we go after Villa is paying big transfer sums for an ageing player.
Big transfer fees were supposed to only be spent on young players with resale value,
so that we could recoup some or all of the invested money.
