Daniel Levy - Chairman

The question is more why did we choose to go with Mourinho rather than give Poch time to turn it around - and thats because Mourinho didn't want a costly and painful rebuild so was therefore the cheaper option.

Comes back to the signings. We thought we had signed 150m worth of talent 😂

2-3 years later we knew we hadn’t.

Nah, you can question what came next, but Poch was done, he wasn't even trying to stay in the job, he'd have taken us down had we let him, it was worse than where we are now.

By the end it was clear what direction the club wanted to go in and it wasn't the direction the manager wanted to go in eg selling the likes of Alderweireld, Eriksen and whoever else he wanted to move on and rebuild with it was to try and keep the band together and add a 'winner' - I'd be pretty bummed out by that point.

At least try and make sense

You need me to spell it out for you? Ironic as your post lacks some sense. You asked why hire Mourinho? And then suggest it was because Levy wanted to avoid paying for a costly rebuild. Yet we’d just spent over 100m on a rebuild with Poch. What makes sense there!?

My point, spelt out for you, was the board and probably Mourinho too (as welll as most fans then) thought we had a terrific squad. Kane and Son up front. And Nombele who was respected around Europe and had elite ability - or so it seemed. So Mourinho , like a lot of people, thought we were pretty well stocked. Actually Poch, Mourinho and the rest were hamstrung by these Poch signings.

Buying some players isn't a rebuild it's something clubs do every summer, or ar least they should do. If you can't tell the difference then that's on you.

What they were hamstrung by goes deeper and back beyond one summers worth of activity - if only life was that simple.

The season when he got no signings at all and yet still took us all the way to the CL final and still managed to take us to the chairman’s dreamland of a 4th place finish? What an absolute failure that season was eh?

You seriously wonder why our second half of that season in the league was so ‘bad’ in terms of results? (though we can only dream of getting 4th place these days!)

I didn’t want Poch sacked. I think he deserved a down year unless we were going to get involved in a relegation battle.

But I have it on a good source that in the time that we didn’t make a single signing, was mostly down to Poch himself, he was offered players but didn’t want them if they were not his first choice. We are not a club that can always get the managers first choice and even when we do (poch’s final year) they don’t always work out.

Like I said I didn’t want him sacked, he deserved better, but there were a lot of spurs fans I know that absolutely brought into the fact that he didn’t win anything and we need a winner. That was very vocal from the fan base (at least around me).

And I think Levy brought into that (that’s conjecture from me not from a source). He thought Jose would get us over the line… he didn’t… but he was sacked before a final… and that probably the single most bizarre decision that Levy had made (not saying it’s the worst decision- but in terms of lacking logic- I just don’t get it)

But apart from the Jose sacking before a final, all the sackings of mangers, there is some logic or at least fan pressure behind. I’m not saying they are correct, like I said I would definitely give Poch more time.

I'm not even sure what you are trying to say

Managers get fired on form, in season or over two seasons (in a calendar year), makes no difference

When Poch was being knocked in certain quarters for not getting us over the line a table was produced showing that over two "seasons" we had the most points. Pretty pointless table Imv.
His detractors derided it, you can't judge across seasons, too many variables, doesn't mean anything.
Wonder if the same people deriding that table think this is irrelevant.

I don't really understand this logic, essentially you're saying Levy is easily swayed by some fans (none of those sackings even had universal support) in terms of who manages the club. He couldn't possibly cope with the pressure is essentially what you're claiming.

Yet when those same fans en masse demanded that we do not sell Carrick, Berbatov, Keane, Bale etc that pressure didn't stop him and he still sold them.

So which one is it? Is Levy someone easily swayed by fan opinion or is he strong willed and will do what he thinks is best for the club? You can't have it both ways.
It's nonsense that fans somehow sway the chairman to make a managerial change. It's usually money that will be the deciding factor.

Take Nuno for example, he came in tied to the narrative that he was somehow a desperate appointment after other managers had turned us down. Then, as if to confirm the narrative, he was sacked because, like most new managers, he had an uneven start and Levy's head had already been turned that summer by the shiny toy of Conte (whether or not he was the right fit for the club). If he'd been a serious appointment, Levy would have stood by him.

Now he may not have worked here but he wasn't given a chance and he was treated appallingly. It's pleasing to see him doing well now, just a shame it's not at our club.

I liked nuno, as a man and as a manager.
As I do with every manager that comes in I look at his record, look at the squad and set my expectations.
They were pretty low for nuno I have to say because I really did not like the look of that squad, I thought we were in a bad place and the fan base was restless.
I am very much a levy supporter, his biggest flaws IMHO is how he has treated some of the nicer of our managers, how he treated BMJ (and I wasn't a fan of his), Poch and nuno is a blight on his stewardship.

I liked Nuno as a man, I liked what he did at Wolves and he is clearly right man, right place, right time with NF. But I think the time he left here may have been premature BUT there were serious alarm bells which culminated in Kane and a others knocking on Levy door to vote no confidence in his tactics (I am 99.9% sure Levy admitted as much in an interview). Wasn't it like 2 and a half games where we didn't have a registered shot on target, some kind of PL record before he got sacked

Like Jose I don't think he was ever suitable for us, and especially not right after Jose and the mess left from his tenure and the fallout from the reign of Poch.
It's a pity because at some stage in this rebuild of the club, and for all the talk of a squad rebuild gets it's often overlooked that it goes deeper than that, nuno may well have been a good candidate for a steady pragmatic manager to keep us moving to where we want to get to.

I don't know how true that was mate and I have my doubts given he only managed for 10 PL games won 5 and lost 5. But from the outside, it appeared that Levy had fruitlessly courted Conte the previous summer. Then when Conte became available he gave Nuno the boot.

I’m not sure that’s how it played out. It had gotten very toxic in the stadium against United and Nuno became a lightning rod for the ire against Levy. Subbing off Lucas Moura, of all things, really kicked it off. At that point, we hadn’t had a shot on target in weeks and we’d lost 3-0 to United, Chelsea and Palace.

I remember Sky reporting the next day that Levy actually wanted to give Nuno more time. I honestly don’t believe it was Conte becoming available in the same way Mourinho’s availability helped spell the end for Poch. I think the club realised it had gotten really bad so they went after Conte.

I am sure he said in an interview he was listening to players over too much and Nuno sacking was one of them. Maybe I am misremembering.

But I was there for the United game and thats the most I have seen the crowd ever turn on a manager, it was toxic and the calls for him to go were very audible.

Ultimately Nuno was the wrong man for the club IMO

Some of the players were being clams as well I think.

Kane was being particularly lazy at that point in time.

Lol, you think a rebuild consists of £100m and just 3 first team players?

Also, if you really do think that £100m and 3 first team players is a rebuild then surely you actually allow the incumbent manager to actually integrate and play his 3 new first team playears. Especially when that manager had outperformed his resources relative to his peers for 5 seasons in a row previously)

The board thinking we had a terrific squad is a massive mistake. They had a manager, in fact the most successful manager of ENIC's whole tenure at Spurs in terms of league position, telling them that we needed a rebuild. Levy allowing Pochettino to spend £100m and bring in 3 new first team players only to sack him before Pochettino had a chance to integrate those 3 new players was absolutely terrible leadership. Either back the manager properly or sack him in the summer and give the next patsy the money to spend instead.

I agree that you can't always get players who are your first choice. However, I also have it on good authority that some of the players that Pochettino wanted were entirely 'gettable'. I don't blame him for getting to the point where he would turn down the cheaper, less proven alternatives, after he'd taken the cheaper alternative so many times previously and the players we gave him were proven to be considerably worse than the ones he wanted.
