Dane Scarlett

Something else that seems to be forgotten when people say things like 'Lankshear is above Scarlett in the pecking order' because he's getting minutes; The players out on loan are getting experience that the kids haven't got yet, and isn't the reason we are playing these youngsters because a) too young to loan, and b) we want them to know they have a future with us so they don't get snapped up by another club before we can get them on a proper contract? In theory the kids will now go out on loan, and hopefully the ones returning from loans are first team ready.

I still have no clue who will end up better out of the pair of them, but the experience thing is massive.

Lanks, 19, built his reputation in a fantastic U21 side with Santago, Soonsup-Bell and Donley around him. 2 of them are playing in the Spanish second division now, with Donley in League 1. That allowed an 18 year old Lanks to score a load of goals and get PL2 PotY. Apart from these 3 games for the first team this season, his England record is this

2023– England U19 5 (3)
2024– England U20 4 (1)

Scarlett, 20, was 16 when he made his Spurs debut in Nov 2020, Since then he's been involved in 66 loan games in the EFL for 3 clubs. He's only had 6 appearances for the first team because he's mostly been away from the club. His England record at youth is the following:

2019 England U15 2 (1)
2019 England U16 1 (2)
2021– England U19 14 (12)
2022– England U20 20 (9)
2023– England U21 4 (2)

It's so interesting how 2 players only a year apart in age can have such different journeys to this point. Logically, you would say it's more important for Scarlett to be with the 1st team, whilst Lankshear goes out on loan to cut his teeth in the EFL. It's obviously nice to score goals there, but it's not the most important thing in my opinion as we saw with Kane.

Such a shame we won't be getting UEFA football next season through the league. All those loanees sort of need it. Saying that, winning the EL or FA Cup will solve that problem.

Fully agreed. It's fairly rare that players make it at this level in the first place of course, but even rarer that they do so without needing a loan first.

A league cup win gets us into the Conference League. But starting at the qualifying round....so probably July:)

Perfect for the youngsters though.

I know Scarlett only came on for the last 10-11 minutes for Richarlison on Sunday, but how did he do? Did he get involved well, good passing or hold-up?

From the fact that Scarlett is a striker which neither Son nor Tel are. From the fact that Scarlett is better in the air than both Son and Tel. From the fact that Scarlett holds the ball up better and has more appropriate physical strength. From how useless we were on Thursday then Scarlett would be a better option even if it was to test him to see if it does work than to play a front three together that we know clearly doesn’t work.

It was 30 Jan when Scarlett stepped on that pitch and changed the game against Elfsborg with a goal and an assist. LOL - not that assists count anymore.

Been treated terribly by the manager since then in my opinion. Only got more than 10 mins in the 2 games we were 2 goals up in, apart from Thursday where it is only half time in the fixture anyway. What did he get? 1 min for an injury?

I could understand if Dane was getting a little disenfranchised with the lack of meritocracy in play.

He and Moore both deserve more chances. Moore has the ability to change a game and maybe he’s still one for the future but when we look devoid of ideas then that’s the time to use a player who ‘could’ be a difference maker like Moore. I haven’t seen as much from Odobert yet and he goes straight in ahead of Moore. Odobert could be good but does he deserve to have leapfrogged Moore just because he’s back fit? Does Scarlett deserve to be left on the sidelines? I think the answer to both of those is a no.

Happened to Spence at the start of the season.

I agree with this. I wonder what the terms of the loan agreement was. Dane should have had much more time. He has looked better than Tel when I have watched.

Has the phrase 'i I can't dance' i.e. 'I + can't + disagree' been added to the auto change list? It is changing to 'I can't dance'

Or perhaps Ange can explain to everyone why he hasn't got a system where Son or Tel could look good in the middle. At the moment, it appears that Dane is the only fit player who can "lead" the line and get in the faces of centre halves. I've not given up on Tel to do that, but I gave up on Sonny doing anything physical on a football pitch years ago. He disappoints me with his cowardice in headers, and he never uses his upper body strength even though he's 6 ft.

Yep. He was brought on to make an impact. He did that, scoring his first goal as well. He must have been buzzing and full of confidence. Ange should have made use of that and rewarded him with minutes in the very next game.
