Cristian Romero

I speak pretty good Spanish and my wife is fluent. So worth explaining that the use of the word disgraceful is a mistranslation from Instagram.

He probably used the word “vegonzoso” which in this context means something closer to “should not be happening”.

Translated directly into English as disgraceful is quite the tone jump.

There is always context to anything that Romero says, as he isn't the strongest English speaker. His point however is correct.
This board of directors has either officiated over or allowed a sporting director to neglectfully stumble to the end of the transfer window with a squad that is decimated by injury, and which before that crisis wasn't playing well at all. The same board that hired a manager with the mandate very specifically to compete on four fronts, has been given £13m worth of new players in the month, and lost 9 to injury, some for rest of the season and most until April.
How is a situation where a disgraced Yves Bissouma has to be "reintegrated" after a series of misdemeanours involving recreational nitrous oxide use, in any way a positive?

The youth setup should to an extent kick in herez but aside from a few minutes for Byfield, it doesn't appear that there is anyone else in that setup so far that is trusted enough to do a job.

We have no fit right back, one recently recovered left back, half the central defenders available, with one of those left having been out for a year, virtually no wide players, and only one creative midfielder fit.

Now if VDV is back shortly, and the Kulu saga is magically almost done, maybe we are not so bad, especially if Spence is also short term.

Nonetheless we're not in good shape, not in very good form, and about to play three very strong teams in a season where we have found even the relegation threatened sides a handful.

I have to say the words "be careful want you wish for" are coming to mind. For all his faults I suspect Levy would have done things very differently here.

Does he just write any kneejerk response he wants after a game and pull it through Google translate or is there someone in his team doing the translating? Surely there should be some sort of barrier between him and social media by now. I'm not sure exactly what he is trying to achieve by seemingly having a dig at the board (unless its a poor translation, in which case he should double or triple check) other than to create even more chaos around the team. He's our captain ffs, and not acting like one. You dont have to publicly hang out your superiors to dry every time you feel something is off. What could they have done with us having 12 players out due to injury anyway? Just sign 5 new players? That would be bloody stupid.

I don't know, I think its time Romero start acting like an adult and as a captain, and protect his team mates and coach, and that isn't done by coming out with vague statements on fudging Instagram.

No but we had all of summer and 4 months prep work to get some loans in at the very least. So over a year we cant get a left wing and a grown up LB?

This board is beyond negligent. If there dont want Frank here (which quite frankly seems like they are trying the best to screw him over) then sack him. How can anybody who claims to "want us to compete" make these incredibly dense decisions. They continue to get a free ride.
And we deserve everything thats coming to us. Well ENIC do.

Its gonna get worse and if we stay on the course with this bunch of board members. They will make sure we get relegated next season if not this.
If Dom and anybody else goes down (which is quite likely) Good luck.

We could recall most of the youngsters that scored on our European run. But knowing Lange the contract probably doesn't allow it.

Yup, can hardly blame Romero for lashing out as no doubt he was persuaded by those Lewis kids that we were finally going to unleash the financial clout of that incredible stadium which Levy built to assemble a formidable squad (like that lot from Woolwich) which was indeed capable of competing on 4 fronts.

Instead we’ve had to watch our squad constantly decimated by injures, since Ange’s 10th PL game 27 months ago, with still no sign of a left footed FB to cover for Udogie (unless the transfer committee seriously believed that Davies could play regularly) whilst Kulusevski ran himself into the ground last season and sadly is probably destined to be a shadow of his former self when he eventually returns; much like has happened to Bentancur.

Meanwhile our only physically dominant midfielder has been Bissouma whom multiple managers have struggled to get playing at a consistently high level and his off-field issues have been a persistent problem stretching back to his multiple speeding offences whilst at Brighton; I’m still annoyed that his tardiness probably cost us the UEFA Super Cup!

And to top it off we’re still expected to attack with the same swagger as when we were blessed with Sonny & Kane up front, despite not adequately replacing either; you’d have thought that the prestige of winning a European trophy and qualifying for the CL would’ve been sufficient to attract a more accomplished LF than young Tel. And selling Johnson to make space in the squad but not actually signing a replacement seemed a bit of a gamble even before Kudus’ inevitable injury.

All in all, an utter omnishambles quite frankly.

I agree, and social media rules should be written into players contracts in my opinion especially when you do things like accept the captaincy. You can't wear the armband of a half a billion business and just start posting unvetted message to the fan base with an implication that Google translate is in play. That is crazy when you think about it. I'm sure what @robp135 says is spot on but where is the validation process. Romero is an employee and represents the club even though he had nothing but good intent. He cares deeply.

I don't mind it, even if it is misguided sometimes. Shows he cares and he's up for a fight.

Whatever his motives or not, the board’s incompetence and neglect dwarfs anything the players say publicly, imo
yeah its definitely the case there. We need better leadership. If I was the Supporters Trust I'd be sending an open letter to Vinai today, asking what the hell is going on.

Differently maybe, well? Probably not. We are where we are because of him let's not forget.

Is it me but does this seem, more and more, like buyer's remorse... I know the Latin culture is outspoken but... one outburst you can explain away, two seems more than coincidental.

Especially with Real Madrid clearly in the market for centre backs in the summer....

It's not a good look that the captain is so outspoken. We all feel what he's feeling but again no-one forced him to sign the extension rather than wait and see how ambitious we REALLY are before doing so.

He won't be the first one hoodwinked on that front (see Conte, Kane etc).

Hopefully he buttons up, knuckles down and plays well enough for us to get Europe again next year and then has a great world cup so we can sell him on a high in the summer. Just got to hope VDV doesn't also want to follow him out at the same time as it'd be good if one of them can be around for the next CB evolution we'll probably have to have.

But it isn't just him .. The players fighting after games, lots of rumours of players wanting out (VDV, Vic, etc.), the social media posts. The club is lacking leadership, the players know it, we fudging know it.

The fact that with 11 injured players in the first team, this club could only muster an opportunistic steal of someone else's transfer (not like we even scouted Gallagher ourselves), and we couldn't even find one, not even one loan player in all of Europe that might have helped?

I agree we are a mess.

As you know, i believe it's been coming for a while.
But at least we can all see how incompetent the owners are when it comes to running things from a football perspective, there can at least be no arguments about that now.

We just have to somehow hope we are not as bad as we currently seem to be by the end of the season

Unfortunately look around, lots of people still defending the owners and Frank

This summer could be the worse we have seen in 30 years mate and I'm not being hyperbolic
- If Frank manages to stay in 12th-14th I could easily see these idiots keeping him
- With no European football, bids are going to come in for VDV, Romero, Porro, and the combination of how quickly they took a low bid for Johnson and no Levy to hold the line, we could easily be stripped of our only top players.
- Not even counting the bids coming in, highly likely we need to replace 5-6 players (Davies, Biss, Vic, RKM, etc.), we trust the team that could only find Gallagher to replace that many well?

Make no mistake, we will probably survive this season, without real change, if we sell a few of our better players and keep Frank, we could be in a real relegation battle next season.

If that happens intentionally then you'd have to think it might be a case of asset stripping slightly before a sale?

It's not a good look, but imo not for him, but for the club. I think some of that is warranted and while I think handl8such things behind closed doors should be the first approach I think it's alright that he speaks out as captain if he doesn't see change happening.

So many supporters are blowing things out of proportion with Romero, his English is not the best [ or so they say]. He is captain [ rightly or wrongly] and is speaking out. Sad really.
