Cristian Romero

No, Romero,s best attributes are when he's facing the attack, steps out early and kills it before it starts. Go back to pre Ange, when he would step out and tackle players well before they got to our box, he has that ability to shut down attacks early.

Secondary is in those type of situations, he's the kind of defender attackers don't like to play against, I go back to that City game where Haaland was flying coming into the game, game starts, Romero crunches him close to half line, Haaland ran away the rest of the match.

The passing and carry stuff is just a bonus.

The issue is he can't play that way if he (and the other CB/FB would would be expected to cover when he steps up) are constantly running towards their own goal because the system has everyone out of position and outnumbered.

This is back to Ange making very good players look like brick.
You mean when we played counter attacking football he looked good
All these players seemed to excel when we played negative football
I find that odd as they are all generally technically good players but demonstrably not very good at defending

What we're doing is not defending though, it's reacting.

Players spent 20 years being instructed that there a principles involved in protecting the goal then a manager comes along and chucks that all in the bin.

Don’t disagree but also don’t think we were that great defensively under conte either
I don't ever remembering us under any manager before giving up the same type of chances over and over to the point me and you could predict how the opposition will score

We'll lose the ball 2/3rds up the pitch, get hit by a diagonal
Early goal in first 5
Defender over complicating it
Two men over at the far post
Opposition centre mid with 20 yards of space, able to drive at heart of defence.

Nope
But I do remember many defenders being poor and making mistakes under other managers

Because Conte constantly allowed his midfield to be outnumbered (stupid fudging 2 in middle, when everyone else in PL has 3, 4 or even 5 in midfield), which meant the CBs were constantly facing free runners from midfield.

Just like Ange leaves the CB's running back to goal outnumbered, and there is always an open space at far post

This is basic defending brick .. no defender is going to look good in these kind of setups.

What about when they play for their country and make the same mistake?

Hats off to him, he was excellent. THAT is who I want to see REGULARLY!!!! Proper leadership!
Indeed, this is why I think a lot of fans over rate our squad - They put in a top performance, fans think they are amazing and then the player backs it up with average at best performances. Romero is certainly one of those.

Great performance last night, but then he does classic Romero right at the end giving away a stupid free kick that could have cost us....

You'll get told off for simply not just appreciating that we got through by the "everything is awesome" phalanx but yep, 100%.

I only caught the second half, and credit where it's due, both Romero and VDV kept a clean sheet in a European quarter final when we weren't creating a host of chances. That's massive, especially for us of all teams. I may have missed a really mature and composed first half performance, which I did from the looks of it so fair play to him.

However, even if it's what the top teams have to do, I can't abide abusing the head injury rule, it's there to protect players, not for game management. And even then, fine be a clam in that regard, it's only basic respect and decency i guess. but that challenge you mention was borderline reckless, it's always in there and didn't cost us last night.

It's about levels I guess, he like many of ours is an "on their day" kind of player. Last night imperious, against Wolves dallying on the ball directly giving away a goal in a game of bizarre mistakes. Let's hope he has his days for a hopeful remaining 3 games of the tournament!

We just played with more behind the ball as a fundamental idea of the manager

There is a middle ground and this team is the extreme the other way and leave the defence to react, I do think Bentancur and Bergy did better than most have recently as sniffing out danger and alternative help in defence

Romero has it in his bag to be an imperious defender, he will always be the Ramos type where the aggressiveness that makes him good will get him in trouble on occasion, something you need to live with.

The "on their day" comment I don't believe, I think the system, coaching (or lack of), injuries (looks at Deki last two games, rusty) and poor form of team has every player in the team underperforming

In the modern game I can off my head name maybe 4/5 CBs who can and still do it all in the traditional sense where as there used to be dozens. Romero is in the upper % of what modern CBs are like based on how the games played and how people and teams now defend.
