Cristian Romero

I don't think he's actually that good, quality passer but when I watch replays of goals conceded he is the chief culprit who's always out of position. Maybe it's just our general approach to defending but good defenders can still shine in bad teams. I'd rather someone like Guehi especially when Romero always seems to be injured.

We also have to consider that he's one of the few players we could get a decent fee for.
Boom.

He was at fault for something like 5 of the first 7 goals we conceded at the start of the season.

What about all of the goals we've been conceding since he he's been injured and out of the team?

Yep, let's wait and see.. maybe Ange will say he is now fit and raring to go again for Thursday
There's 4 games between now and the international break so plenty of chance to play for us before assessing whether he's ok to go away or not.

I'm sure all sides have an idea of his fitness, and besides his national side probably had a deadline to work to re squad announcement. Plus it's a set of big match ups for them with Brazil and Uruguay

This is not good optics for Romero. Gets injured seriously, hasn't even played for Spurs since that match and boom Argentina calls him up.

He’ll be injured in South America. Moan about not being jetted home and then get sent off after thirty seconds on his first comeback game if their ever is one.

I don’t like him.

Back ups are just as bad, point being he's meant to be first choice and world class but we don't look massively better with him in the team.
He's not world class, but he's not a scrub and the source of our goal concessions is the system, not the players.

Some strange opinions here being passed off as fact.

I know I’ve said it before but the fact is we average over 2 points per game when he and VDV start together - and closer to 1.3 when either or both are missing….and we had a good spell last season when he returned after the Chelsea game and VDV didn’t - so it’s not all VDV.

I do however have a massive issue with the availability around international breaks. Getting Lo Celso-esque.

Tottenham Hotspur have given the green light to Cristian Romero’s inclusion in the Argentina squad, despite the fact the defender has not played this year.

Romero has played only 15 minutes since November 10, having been sidelined with a quadriceps injury, but has been called up to the preliminary Argentina squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Brazil later this month. His last 15-minute appearance for Tottenham was in the 4-3 home defeat to Chelsea on December 8.

The announcement has sparked concern among some Spurs fans, but it is understood that the club have been in close contact with the Argentine federation about Romero’s injury, recovery and potential availability for his country.

Tottenham were fully expecting Romero to be called up for the March games after their talks with Argentina and the defender has been included in his country’s preliminary squad with his club’s blessing.

Insiders have pointed out that clubs stay in regular and close contact with the national federations of their players in any case, and that it would be extremely rare for a player to receive a call-up without their prior knowledge.

Tottenham had kept Argentina up to date with Romero’s progress with his recovery, rehabilitation and return to training with the defender in the running to return to head coach Ange Postecoglou’s squad for Thursday night’s Europa League last-16 game against AZ Alkmaar.

After this week’s visit to Alkmaar, Spurs host Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday, Alkmaar next week and travel to Fulham in their final game before the international break – by which time Romero could have featured in as many as four matches.

Tottenham will stay in close contact with Argentina over the next couple of weeks to update them on Romero’s progress and also notify them of any potential problems or setbacks. Assuming there are no difficulties, however, it is assumed Romero will be available for selection for the World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Brazil.

Argentina call up players that are injured so they can judge. Has happened before where a player hasn't played after being called up, as they are injured.

I love the way that football fans get out of the box over "their" players heading away to play for their country.

For me, it is yet another RIP Football moment. The toxic broadcasting companies and their collaboration with the toxic Premier League have total thought control over fans nowadays. Money rules. These fans can't go back to being that 8 year old kid in the playground wanting to be Bobby Moore, Bryan Robson or Terry Butcher. I will never lose that, whether it is football, rugby, cricket or any other sport.

I have absolutely no gripe with Romero or any other player wanting to play for their country. It is the pinnacle of any sporting career. If Spurs are happy to play Romero in the games leading up to the international break then it's obvious that he needs to represent his country. They are World Cup qualifiers after all. What player wouldn't want to get an international cap?

Fans also forget the amount of times that players have used international breaks to get back to full fitness and form and the club has benefitted. Way more than where they pick up injuries. They forget about the mental health of players who get to the visit their home countries after months away in a foreign country. Having that quality time with best friends and family members, albeit briefly due to the international commitments.

One man's opinion.

Club football is a juggler standard that international now hence why it’s not the pinnacle. It’s a poor standard now

Club football is often as dull as ditchwater whereas internationals can be more entertaining but nobody wants to admit it.

That pointless Nations League has had some of the best humdinger games for years and years. Sssshhhhh, don't tell anyone that they were more entertaining than Ipswich vs Forest on a Sunday afternoon.

I'd happily see football realign itself with rugby and cricket and make internationals the priority. I bet the players would as well. They seem to still love the whole international thing.

I would also hazard a guess that there is a not insubstantial crossover of fans who want us to be signing elite-level, ‘oven-ready’ players and fans who don’t want our players or accepting international call-ups. If that is the calibre of player we want/need, then international duty is part and parcel of the package.
Of course an injured player being called up is more of an issue - but if the above article is accurate and it is with the club’s agreement, then that is fair enough (assuming he is back playing by the time of the international break).
You are right also about the positive aspect of using these games to gain fitness and even if playing time is limited, he is still training at a high level.
Friendlies however I have more of a problem with.

Than because the teams are poor and limited
