Circus ManUnitus - Nobody's At The Wheel

they have to compete with Chelsea/Barca/Madrid/Bayern, what else were they going to do?

Yeah, it's a fair point, but there appears to be no strategy to their signings. Look at Mourinho. He came into Chelsea and he obviously knew there'd be a decent budget, but it was a still a targeted and intelligent transfer window that made them comfortable title-winners. He bought a spine that fitted with the existing players. He'd already brought in Matic, but he got Fabregas to make the play alongside. He got Costa to bang the goals in upfront and put away all the service from Hazard and Willian. He brought back Courtouis from loan to replace the waning Czech.

With Man U, it just seems to be more a case of, what big names can we buy that can make a splash?

It's not to say it won't necessarily work, occasionally you can just get enough good players together to make it all click together. My point kind of is looking at the Man U team from last season, their midfield and attack, personnel-wise was decent on paper, it just needed tweaking. However their defence was just a complete joke.

But they've decided to overhaul the midfield and attack AGAIN from what they had last season which was another overhaul. In the meantime, are you still going to be seeing Blackett, Evans, Jones and Smalling trying to defend?

If Shaw can stay fit he could be like a new signing for United though. he didn't really have much of a run of games to settle in and if he can replicate the form he had at Southampton he could really help them out. If I remember rightly Rojo had injury problems too as well as Phil Jones. I know it's all big if's as to whether they can stay fit but bear in mind even with these injuries they still only conceded 5 more goals then Chelsea.

mourinho inherited a title capable side at chelsea, LVG (and Moyes to be fair) inherited a bit of a mess, they are making up for years of negligence

United have to compete NOW, if they don't win the PL every season that's failure, building a side is what a normal club does, United are on a different level

I think there is logic in their signings, it's not a Madridesque just buy all the good attacking midfielders

Really? did I miss a bunch of defensive purchases?

yeah, but I don't think they are done yet, and that extra protection they will get will make a difference

also, didn't they only concede 5 more than chelsea in the league last season?

Yes, the conceded numbers weren't bad, but I put that down to most opponents have to sit deep due to the attacking options they have.

The problem is, that doesn't work when you play against your peers, and their defense won't be good enough vs. top PL/CL clubs.

I don't think LVG will ever be done, I think he's a kid in the candy store, and the owners are petrified that they will be cut out of top 2 and are gambling big ...

Watching Barca - United. we should target that fat kid on left back come 8th of August. He looks a bit like a liability and a red card waiting to happen.

Another classic from the arrogant prick today

United wont win the league unless they sign a superstar, weren't ADM & Falcao superstars that he signed last season ?

The bloke gets more ridiculous with each day and each time he opens his very big trap

I can not stand LVG. From his demeanour to his accent he makes my blood boil. I'm so glad he ended up there.

Also, he's on his iPad all game does he ever stand up????

LVG apparently retiring in 2017. Could explain why he's in such a hurry with player purchases and why he spends so much. It's not like he'll be accountable in the long run anyway.

Giggs will take over and royally feck it up. I think Man Utd are in for a turbulent few years, which was always going to be the case after decades of stability under Fergie... so it's hardly unexpected. I think Arsenal will go through the same process after Wenger.

Good times to be a Spurs fan! :)

I quite liked his dig at Chelsea:
Van Gaal says Cristiano Ronaldo is the type of player Manchester United need to compete with their rivals.
When asked if he needed that kind of player to complete his squad, he said: "Of course."
He added: "I can give examples of champions: Bayern Munich, Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben; Chelsea, Eden Hazard and Willian; Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale; Barca, Neymar and Lionel Messi.
