I think I misunderstood what was meant by the genius of van Gaal. It's the way that he has got the Glazers to spend that is true genius and why Fergie will always be in his shadow.
I wonder what Fergie is thinking about this. He was very accepting of the position United were in, albeit well-rewarded for his quiescence, and maintained United at the top for five years on a modest budget, which unfortunately left his chosen one with a crumbling squad. If Fergie had spent half the money that van Gaal has, he could have handed over a much stronger squad to Moyes.
