Two things seem inevitable with LvG. Him falling out with people, and him getting success.
Most teams have big failures in the transfer market spending that kind of money quickly. He's had failures, he's had successes. The difference between them and clubs like ourselves (and to an extent Livepool) is that they can just keep spending until they get it right.
Bale looks crud at the moment, and LvG has previous for playing players out of position.
Manure has spent a billion dollars in last 5 years, I fully expect them to spend more and be a challenger.
What has changed is Manure under SAF had an air of inevitability, they would always compete, they were the dominant side in England, to me that is gone. SAF would have spent stupid money to win the title, LVG spent stupid money to get in the top 4 .. it is a difference.
SAF never had the starting point LvG had.
Had SAF taken over again last summer I'm sure he would have been willing to spend loads, like you say. And had he gotten CL football as a result it would have been seen as a reasonable success - as it has for LvG.
Mate, Manure won the title two seasons ago ..
If Spurs added Mata, Di Maria & Falcao to a side that already had De Gea, Carrick, Rooney & RVP, I would expect a title challenge ...
That level of talent is grossly underperforming, fudge give us Mata & Carrick now and I would expect 4th ... LVG has gotten a pass from the media because its Manure and because of his reputation.
The current side is without Evra, Vidic and Ferdinand from that title winning side. In addition Rafael and Carrick have been out much of this season with injury and RvP is looking a shadow of his previous self. That's a huge (generational) change. People were making excuses about that already for Moyes last season and those should still be valid for LvG this season imo.
There's also something to be said about giving a new manager some time to settle in and get things going his way...
I really think Ferguson left United in a bit of a mess, perhaps not his fault as the financial issues under the Glazers cut his spending power for a while so ending up with a somewhat older unbalanced squad was not entirely of his making. But it was not as clear as just adding those players to a title winning side and push on.
LvG will (rightly) be judged on next season. If they spend big again this summer I agree that a title challenge should be expected. CL qualification was the minimum goal this season to be sure, but it was a reasonable minimum goal that he's (seemingly) achieved.
Missed out on Depay, could have got him last year if we paid a bit more. Idiots. He looks the nuts. Still, United would have got him after a year with us anyway.....
just from what the president of PSV said the other week, Ill try and find it but it said that he would go for more than what we offered last year. We would never pay £30m again for a 21 year old after Lamela anyway, so we need to be looking at players on the fringe of making it at half the cost or less.
He would go, this season, to United. For more than we offered last year. From that you conclude that if only we had offered more last season we could have signed him?
No need to look for the quotes if that's what they said.
Well we had £15m turned down last year, so had we offered more, say £25m or £30m, IMO we would have got him.
Despite it looking rather likely that LvG had plans to bring him to United all along?
Agree with Jordinho, don't think we had a chance this season or last.
Fair enough, could be right. I thought we were after him for a bit and then once everyone knew, united then came in and registered their interest and only then it was too late. So there might have been a window when we probably could have one it quietly and quickly but didn't.
So we were going to sign Depay, a world renowned top class talent. Who at the time in question worked under LvG for the national team. Without other top clubs finding out about it through agents, or Depay himself just talking to LvG?
And in the middle of this Depay would early on last summer, despite the ongoing World Cup, sign for us without considering that bigger clubs might come in for him...?
No way to sign players of his reputation without "everyone" knowing.
I'm actually quite bored of talking about this now dude. Haven't got a source to backup the fact that I'm bored mind you......
That's cool.
I'm quite bored with Spurs fans calling our club idiots without being able to defend their statement...
