Christian Benteke

unless you think paying 32m for Benteke to be our second choice striker is the only option we have this summer then i don't see how that can be considered a 'kop-out' - it's cop out btw ;)

working on the assumption we're going to be spending no more than we make in transfer fees then we look to have a budget of around 30-50m depending and considering our first XI still needs a bit of work (CM - L or RWF) and several other positions need good alternative back ups (CF RB Lor RWF) then to spend over half our potential budget on a position which will most likely be a back up role seems utterly ludicrous to say the least.

a lot of peoples complaints, including yours iirc, this season have been centered around our defensive frailties with central midfield being pinpointed as a major factor - well now we've got the chance to address that situation and you want to blow your load on a secondary striker, doesn't really make sense if you ask me.

Starting CM to partner Bentaleb is of greater importance and if Schneiderlin is at all do-able id take him over Benteke (or any other expensive forward) if it was a straight choice between the two

As much as I would love to see in Benteke is a Spurs shirt I agree, Mason is a decent player ( no more then that) and there is no doubt ( imo) that CM has got to be our first fix.

Can't be one or the other ..

- We need a striker, and one that competes with Kane
- We need an experienced midfielder that adds a bit more defensive cover
- We need a RW option

Whatever else we do this summer, if we fail to address those 3 areas, we will not even retain 5th next year.

of course we need to address all those areas - but if we break our transfer record for one of those positions it will seriously effect how me much we can spend on the others and seeings as a lot of people have been commenting on how we need to improve the way the first team play - id suggest that the primary focus needs to be on the positions in the first XI that need improving first and foremost. signing Benteke ahead of those other positions will not improve our build up play or our defensive play. at best it would be papering over the cracks

Thanks for the spelling lesson I:rolleyes:

Quality strikers with EPL experience and a decent track record cost big bucks. I think this should be our main priority. Imo Kane is unlikely to reproduce his 30 plus goal season for a variety of reasons. He needs both competition and on occasion partnership to assist him next season. He looked absolutely shot towards the end of the season. At the very least we need another top quality striker and for me Benteke best fits that bill.

Yes we need strengthening in other areas too. But we don't need to blow a wad there. experience is more important imo.Particularly a specialist DM and an AM. I would go for Cabaye or Song as the DM. They have great pedigree, protect the back four and can pass. From what I have seen, I would go for Aranautic ( (?Sp) from Stoke as the AM.

That is how I would spend our expected budget, given assumed sales.

Not a Benteke fan, but goals paper over a lot of cracks ...

I am with those that think spending over £30 million on Benteke isn't in our interests now. It's not that I don't think he is a good player, it's more that I think we'd be better off signing a player who could either compliment Kane if Kane drops back to the number 10 role, but can also play in a similar manner to Kane as the lone striker.

I agree with you but think that we probably need a pacy LW option ahead of another option on the right.

Austin, Schnederlin and Ayew would be a really nice three to sign IMO....

The first two PL proven and Ayew a would seem a good gamble on a bosman. All good ages, all seem to have the right work-rate and mentality, all should be available for fees that our club can afford, all would fit in with our wage structure. All should be gettable if our chairman pushes the boat out.

surely it's better that we address those cracks rather than paper over them? i want to see a fully functioning Pochettino spurs team - spending the majority of our potential budget on a secondary striker will not do help us achieve that, imv

Taking the squad as it stands, we have cover ( albeit limited in some cases) in all positions EXCEPT CF.

Riddle me this - what happens if Kane gets injured on day one of next season?

And you blame others of being deliberately obtuse? I've stated repeatedly, directly to you, in this thread that I want us to sign at least one striker, preferably two.

Even you can see that to rely on a single CF all season would be nonsensical. Why are you so sure an ageing Llorente or Lambert or GHod forbid Soldado or Ade are all adequate replacements to lead the line by themselves.[/QUOTE

I'm not the one being so sure. I'm questioning your statement that it's a "no brainer" to pay that much for Benteke. I can only take you referring to Soldado and Ade as you not really paying attention to what's being said at all.

I do not disagree with that at all.

I don't think so. Remember next year the youngest squad in Europe will be a year older, and Poch will have a full pre-season to work with them. That should create a lot of organic growth.

And look at our rivals. Koeman will have a difficult second season as the Poch/Cortese/Mitchell momentum runs our and he has to deal with EL for the first time ever. Liverpool are in crisis, have lost their lynchpin player again, and Rodgers will be sacked by November (their situation reminds me of us in summer 2003).

I genuinely think we will continue to progress significantly through organic growth. I would be delighted with just Ings (CF cover/competition), Ayew (LWF cover/competition) + Alli, Pritchard and Wimmer coming into the mix.

I think we will improve, not worried about SCBC, but expect Everton will replace them position wise.

My concern with your view, lack of experience added, also not addressing 3 areas

- RW, concerned that neither Lamela/Townsend owns that first team spot
- DM, need to not concede 50+ goals again next season, not sure how we do that without a quality/experienced singing (MS/Cabaye)
- Striker, so Ings (he seems to be looking at Pool) might work, but someone needed as cover, and as a 10+ goal contribution

If you'd be 'delighted' with the signings you list then I can only assume you're not one of the thousands forking out over £1,000 for a season ticket?

Ings would leave a HUGE burden on Harry Kane as he isn't a player that could replace him as the number 9. I think we'd fail to even hang on for 5th place if that is all the business we did this Summer.
