My Sporting-supporting colleague says his club are hurting financially and have to sell to make ends meet. His family and friends in Lisbon thought the transfer would happen soon, especially now that Benfica and Porto have run off with the CL spots. Sporting are well back in fourth, likely to make EL.
As for other's asking why we didn't buy in summer, perhaps there was still hope of salvaging a deal with Eriksen - sign or sell - which had a bearing on the Fernandes situation. Now, we know Eriksen is leaving and Fernandes would be a sensible replacement, especially with a Portuguese manager.
It has also been reported by a national newspaper this morning that the club could revisit a deal for Sporting Lisbon's Bruno Fernandes, but Mourinho ruled out a move for him last month.
"I would definitely say no," he said. "Because Bruno is a player of a level and value that is not for us. We are not a club that is going to make big transfers in the market."
