Brandon Austin

Think he did well. Why do we keep extending the guy??

He did do well, but he's also third choice keeper, he's not being hidden away as suggested by the original poster.
I can just imagine the reaction if we dropped an experienced keeper in Forster for our untried 3rd choice gk to play behind our current defence.

Exxact same with reggie, a good 45 mins and every bad performance, and there were plenty of them, magically disappeared.

My only ask is that Ange operates a meritocracy and keeps him on goal for the next one.

There is no logical argument for him not to be in goal, even if Forster has recovered.

Unless he thinks Forster is better.

By that logic Vic might never get back in, if Forster keeps doing ok.

I think he's better than that, as he showed today, he's capable of playing PL football.

I doubt he's better than Forster, but he can do a job, and his salary is probably a rounding error compared to Son and Maddison.
He's played one game in about 9 years as a pro - he's a training partner for us; that's what we've paid him for.

I don’t think you could say conclusively based on today that he can play regular PL football. He had a very good game, he got MOTM which was deserved due to the circumstances but it was one game. You’d want to see a keeper in a dozen or so games before making any real judgement on him IMO.

You have to assume that seniority was the only reason Forster got the nod? That if Austin had gone in and had a couple of mares then we'd have effectively buggered two backups in one? Because he was most certainly more confidence inspiring than Forster and better!

A fair point

Maybe when Vicario is fit again Austin can give him some coaching on how to command the penalty area. For the first time in a long while I wasn’t bricking myself every time we conceded a set piece (well after I saw him come and claim the first two of them).

Look at the difference it made to our defenders as well when they knew the keeper behind them would claim anything in his zone. Saudi Sportswashing Machine were a bigger, more physical team than us as well but our keeper completely nullified that for set pieces.

He got smashed, repeatedly and hurt himself
But he came for everything
What helped on corners was our defenders getting physical with theirs
We did start with bigger players than normal

I actually never understood why Austin got the new contract, but Forster got the number 2 place.

I thought this season we'd see Forster move from 2nd to 3rd choice actually. What probably confused me was Forster being injured during pre-season and the first couple of games when Austin was on the bench.

I just hope Whiteman finds his exit this month.
