AVB & Spurs Tactics and Formations discussion thread

after seeing ths first two games there is no doubt in my mind that AVB has a vision and knows what he is doing (arrogance of a fan online to say something lik that is not lost on me)

he just needs time and maybe a couple of players. thats it

i just havent warmed up to him and the direction he is taking my club to (probably cause i dont know what his vission is )..i do like some of the things he says and has tried and some of the tactical shifts he has done.

good coach is our AVB, just dont 'like' him yet. but i dont need to anyway

Can you explain this? How will Benny be caught out but Walker won't? I wouldn't really describe Vertonghen as pacey either.

Yes I don't get this. Walker is very quick, but still has a lot to learn about positioning while Verts is completely new to this league so hard to be certain about how he will perform.

I just think that BAE is so nonchalant that it could work against him as it has done before. Sometimes that can be a good thing, but when you're playing such a high line I think you need all your defenders to be sharp as a knife. People last season saying that he's better than Baines - not sure about that to be honest. Walker is learning a lot as he keeps on going, his positioning is a lot better than it was when he first played last season - and his recovery pace is remarkable. Vertonghen seemed to work the line well yesterday I thought - in an ideal world he will be able to act as more of a sweeper behind Kaboul.

One thing about BAE is when the system altered after the changes (read players didnt have a clue what they were doing) he was more exposed as Bale switched sides. Prior to that Bales was wide left, had BAE around him, and Verts playing through centre. Agree on Walkers improvement, still a lot more to come too.

you'd only put a lob in like that when you know there's enough distance between the last man and keeper.
and Real did that TWICE successfully.

Mourinho's a genius, i tell ya.

Successfully. In part because Barcelona played a midfielder at the back.

Sorry, but world class players taking advantage of an error made by a defender who is not a defender who happened to be playing a high line is not really an argument against a high line.

I think that it is clear with the latest transfer activities that we will no longer plan with dedicated AM and change the formation from 4-2-3-1 to 4-3-3. This is how I think we will play assuming that Lloris and Moutinho are signed.

-----------------Lloris---------
Walker---Gallas---Kaboul----BAE
--Dembele---Sandro---Moutinho-
Lennon-----Adebayor-------Bale

And here would be the squad

GK1: Lloris
GK2: Friedel
GK3: Cudicini

RB1: Walker
RB2: Naughton
RB3: Kaboul

CB1: Kaboul
CB2: Gallas
CB3: Vert
CB4: Caulker
CB5: Dawson
CB6: Hudd

LB1: BAE
LB2: Naughton
LB3: Vert

RCM1: Dembele
RCM2: Parker
RCM3: Livermore
RCM4: Sandro
RCM5: Hudd

DM1: Sandro
DM2: Parker
DM3: Livermore
DM4: Hudd

LCM1: Moutinho
LCM2: Sig
LCM3: Dembele
LCM4: Livermore
LCM5: Carroll

RW1: Lennon
RW2: Sig
RM3: Dembele

LW1: Bale
LW2: Sig
LW3: Dembele
LW4: Townsend

ST1: Adebayor
ST2: Defoe
ST3: Kane

We look light on wingers. Would be over the moon if we get Willian or Dempsey.

looks like we're going to be set up to have pace throughout the side. Wish we had someone to control the tempo too. Pressing from the front should be good.

This was a point I made about VDV and Modric and their importance to our tempo. Interested to see how AVB sets the team up because at present I am really unsure of what that will look like.

this is the starting 11 for me (based on Kingdawsons insistence that siggy can play CM)

..............lloris

walker....gallas/kaboul.......verty.......BAE

....................sandro/ parker

........................siggy

dembele............dempsey................bale

........................Ade...............

thats a good team for me

From what I've seen I don't think Siggy can play that role in midfield. He has to play as the midfielder who gets the furthest forward.

I think the plan is exactly how AVB set up at Porto. We have the personel for it now so personally speaking i think the plan is..

real showed barca the perils of playing a high defence line by beating them in the 2nd leg of the supercup:

Did you actually watch the game, or just basing that on the highlights?

Real played a high line themselves as it were, at least in the first half they pressed Barca all over the pitch.

Of course there are negatives to playing a high line, but there are also positives. It's about comparing those to the negatives and positives of playing a more defensive line and pressing game.
