AVB & Spurs Tactics and Formations discussion thread

Lukaku was extremely impressive. And just 19 years of age!!!!
He was causing all sorts of problems for our back-line. Gallas really struggles against strong target men like him - a la Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final. It sickens me that they can play over our transfer record for a player like him and be able to stick him out on loan.

not trying to stoke the fire any but if you replace Modric with Livermore we're probably 2-0 at this point in time. AVB's not playing with a full hand at the moment and we all know that. Right now JJ is the only player in the squad resembling a true creative CM so who else was AVB supposed to choose? (cue argument for the overweight Hudd)
For sure. It's unfortunate that (yet again) we go into the season without a full squad - and two of our most important positions not being settled. Had Adebayor been fit and settled, then we might have got more than one today, as Bale and Lennon put in a fair few crosses in the first half. Which is unfortunate when you have Defoe in the box, when it's at head height or above he isn't going to win it over their centre-backs.

Milo, it was WBA

Not Everton, City or Liverpool

Siggy should've started

It is not about the opposition, we have a new manager who wants us to change the way that we play. It is going to take a while for the players to get used to it and it makes sense to have a settled formation during that period.

I think the risk is AVB tries to change too much too quickly. We are coming off the back of 4th and so we were doing many things right last season. Really depends on the window, because I tend to think the weaknesses we have are going to be magnified under AVB until things settle.

I think you're right

I suspect that us successfully playing teams offside, is about the best we're gonna see for a few months

He wants us to play a quick, pressing game, closing down the opposition high up the pitch. You cannot really do that by degrees. I have doubts about whether it will work but we have to give him time.

Under Harry though we pressed, admittedly his approach was more open but I am not convinced it is all or nothing. But I agree it needs time, you are right. However, AVB's system also needs the right personnel and on that I remain to be convinced that we have the strength and options required.

Someone in front of me today said

'He must be given til Xmas at least though before we can think about sacking him'

I agree and I think AVB does too, which is why I think we are seeing the slower and less mobile players being linked with moves. To play the way he wants us to, we need a team full of fast, athletic players. How we can play like this without being burnt out in March, I don't know, but I hope that I am wrong.

Agreed, even if I have some concern we are overstating our options/strength (especially in CD if Daws goes without replacement). I just hope ABV values skill and creativity as much as he does athletic ability because that is the key to unlocking teams. Indeed, it is telling that we started well in both games, failed to take our chances (or create enough clear ones) and then ran out of steam. Admittedly this wasn't helped today by the loss of structure/focus which occured after his subs (demonstrative that it really is going to take time to embedd the system) but still an issue to think about.

Interesting quotes from AVB prior to West Brom regarding 4-2-3-1 vs 4-3-3. Reads to me like we'll be switching to the latter formation in time. Sandro/Livermore clearly not his preferred pairing long term!

“I think the 4-2-3-1 formation became fashionable because of the way it offers more balance, and I consider it not to be as attacking as a 4-3-3,” said Villas-Boas.
“But depending on who you put behind that striker position you can make it a little bit more aggressive, and depending on what you do with the full-backs you can make it a little bit more aggressive.
“These two sitting midfielders are normally people of cover, but last year Harry used it with Modric being creative from that position, so that is another way to make it even more attacking.
“It was almost like one player sitting and another one free – and Harry used it to great success. There are obviously different ways to approach it.”

Interested to see how we'd line up in a 4-3-3 and how sees the 3 in midfield working versus what we have now...

From what I've read his system seems to revolve around 3 midfielders, one defensive, one box to box and one attacking.

I don't see why we cant play Sandro defensive, Siggy box to box and VDV as attacking untill we get a replacement for Modric. Haven't seen anything to suggest Sig couldn't fill that role for a while at least.

Playing a high-line will work great with pacey defenders like Walker, Vertonghen and Kaboul. I have a feeling that BAE will be caught out a few times this season because of it, though. Was a massive liability in yesterday's second-half.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto is convinced Tottenham are heading in the right direction under new coach Andre Villas-Boas despite no win in their opening two games.

Spurs conceded a stoppage-time equaliser against West Bromwhen James Morrison netted, ultimately prolonging Villas-Boas' search for his first victory in charge of the club.

The 34-year-old, who replaced Harry Redknapp, is under pressure to restore his reputation in English football after being sacked by Chelsea in March.

However, Cameroon international Assou-Ekotto is fully behind his new mentor and believes he can succeed at White Hart Lane, likening him to former Blues boss "son of Jose Mourinho".

"He's cool," he said.

"He has a different way to work, so we learn different things from him.

"He's like the son of (Jose) Mourinho because he used to work with him and he works in the same style. We do a little more tactics at training.

"If we work more about tactics we can win and we will enjoy (our football)."

Can you explain this? How will Benny be caught out but Walker won't? I wouldn't really describe Vertonghen as pacey either.
