American politics

Asian markets down massively, no doubt Europe & the US will follow suit

If the tariffs plan is to make thr world poor again, Trump has hit the motherload with it

To me, it seems as if he is extending the domestic policies of penalising or not individual firms to extract 'favours'. He has law firms, social media companies, etc., coming to him on bended knee. Now he wants countries to be beholden to him and his whims in a similar manner and is using tariffs as the stick to do it. Needless to say, he has no notion of what he is doing. He is a simpleton surrounded by other economic illiterates.
There may be some upsides to the end of globalisation, from a climate perspective in particular, though a managed post-growth trajectory would be less painful than outright economic collapse.

It’s almost entirely about him and his billionaire mates making billions more. America is now just as corrupt as Russia.
But it wasn't even hidden. He told the voting public what he would do, and is doing it. Therfore less blame lies with Trump for this, more with the people who voted for him.

And the Judiciary has been weakened. Power corrupts especially when all former opponents are falling into line. Imagine the head fudge that gives to someone with his ego. He thinks he can do anything. It's odd that there are not sufficient checks and balances on Executive power in the US.

The last time America had a crash on the world economy like this, you saw the rise of Nazism in Germany. So you have the combined effect of the curtailing of USAID and then these tariffs. The effect on smaller countries will be catastrophic and make the world less safe.
