American politics

There should be some kind of voting license. You have to take some theory courses and lessons and eventually an exam to drive a car. Same with jobs, you need papers to be a certified plumber. Only thing you need to vote is surviving 18 years on this planet, and for most westerns, that's not all that bloody difficult.

In some republican run states, they've passed voter ID laws which means you have to have a Government issued ID to vote which is usually a driver's license (because obviously noone in mississippi is going to own a passport). But if they don't drive, they can lose the right to vote all in the name of "voter fraud" which is bull, its just a way of republicans stopping the poor and minorities from voting and obviously these people are more inclined to vote democrat.

How much does a driving license cost?

That is true in most states, i remember having a conversation with a member of the American Air Force a couple of years back and he told me that only about 10% of Americans own a passport ( and that included those in the forces). No idea if that is true but if so that explains why they seem to be insular.

I'm reading Paul Theroux's Deep South - all about the poor southern US states, the huge racial divides that still exist and the abject poverty; like the 3rd World. People not feeding themselves, just dirt poor and many hooked on drugs

It's a depressing read, from a distance just seeing america from their tv and films you think things have improved for black people but this book puts it in contect

Clinton is just as nuts as Trump, just because you bothers to cover it up means nowt

No .. and that is the issue with people's mentality, media and the era of false equivalency.

Is either Clinton or Trump broadly likeable candidates = no
Are they equally "as bad" or "nuts" or "insert complaint here" = not even close

Hillary Clinton is a career politician, who has tons of experience in multiple areas of government, she has wanted to be president for years and has prepared for it.. She comes with all the baggage that most career politicians come with re past choices, funding and corporate interests, even her biggest scandal (email) was in fact a practice done by previous republicans in her role. She is generally quite a boring personality (from what you see of her public image).

Trump is a petulant child, with classic signs of social/mental disorders, is a failed businessman, is in it not because he had some dreams of being president, but because fame/attention is a drug he can't live without, but the biggest issue with Trump is he is an extremely ignorant person, he does not read, he has very little knowledge of anything and still thinks he is the brightest guy in the room.

See the following for a good view on Trump

Actually her biggest scandal was lying about the emails, then when she was caught out lying again. She got caught out again - guess what she did?

Or maybe her biggest scandal was claiming to land in Bosnia under sniper fire. No, scratch that. It was definitely the lie about her daughter jogging near the WTC on September 11th.

My problem with Clinton is not that she lies - all politicians do. It's that she lies about things that can cause so much hurt and distress, that she shows a complete lack of respect to those who actually have been through those things. Worst of all, she doesn't need to do it to beat Trump - she just has to not be a taco for a few months and it's hers. Yet only a couple of days ago she was off making brick up again about kids in wheelchairs not being able to go to school. If she continues like this, one of those lies will be enough to put Trump in the Whitehouse and from the position she's in now, it will only be her fault.

Not defending her in the least .. and agree .. it should (but won't) be a walk in the park if she can avoid huge pitfalls.

But my original point, its not a close comparison of who is lesser of two evils ....

If she puts Trump into the Whitehouse through her own inability to avoid telling highly offensive lies, the gap is closer than you think IMO.

These aren't "I will not raise taxes" or "Increase spending on the NHS" lies, these are low-return, high level of emotional involvement lies that really serve her no purpose and are so easy to disprove.

Trump would be 'great fun' in the White House......until he was shot....by a Texas college kid!

Clinton is just such a robotic, uninspiring 'Wall Street' candidate. Full of sh1t, the more you hear her talk, the less you want to hear.

Trump is an egomaniac and professional bullsh1t artist, but I don't think he is a dangerous or mad as is portrayed. I think he plays up to that because he thinks it's his path to the Presidency and it's hard to argue with his logic so far; It got him the nomination and it's getting him the anti-establishment vote (amazing considering he is a New York billionaire). Yank Presidents are pretty constrained by their political system -- he'd do well to be as bad a President as Bush Jr and he got two terms!

They are two sh1t candidates and whoever wins will probably do so because they aren't the other guy.

It reminds me very much of the EU Ref. One side is motivated to vote out of anger or change (Trump/Leave) and the other side is the establishment position that is inspiring nobody but will get a lot of reluctant voters (Clinton/Remain).

My gap is not about chances of winning (which is a lot closer than it should be), my gap is about suitability of candidates.

He is amazingly thin skinned, I've never seen someone in business or public office who is so easily wound up and cannot let go of a topic not matter how much it drags him over the edge.

He would be a worse candidate than Bush Jr (and he was bad), the guy has no concept of constitutional rights, the purpose/value of global treaties/organizations and the general role of a country in a global community. The perfect example is talking about defaulting on America's debt, the dumbass thinks its one of his Atlantic City casino's that he can declare bankruptcy and screw the City/people/contractors all in the name of his personal gain.

The vote is very reminiscent of the EU vote .. and a big part of both those votes is refusal to accept the world has/is changing.

Trump is the result of the republican party's years of appeal to the very rabid group of voters, and I will best leave that description to someone else (Adam Acosta on quora)

quote ->
The truth of the Republican party is much of the base is not there because they care or even know anything about policy. They might have a cross hanging somewhere in the house, but that doesn’t mean they actually care about religion, either. It’s a party of voters who mostly come together because they hate the same people. People who drive Priuses. People with advanced degrees. Foreigners, especially uneducated foreigners, especially if their population birthrate is higher than the white American birthrate. That damn sissy pope acting like Christianity is about caring for the poor and embracing the downtrodden people of other countries, too.

That’s about it. They’re people who look around and see Oberlin College and brown people wearing Hijab and are terrified they’re gonna lose “their” country, because you know, whoever they’re descended from got here 80 years sooner so they have sole claim to what it means to be an American. They’re losing the culture war and are lashing out in a desperate attempt to gain back ground, so they nominate the guy who finally stops pretending and playing nice and just says what they’ve all been thinking the whole time. Nothing else they did worked, so why the heck shouldn’t they try this?

Just because Clinton is a better package does not mean she is anyway less evil than Trump. For my money its better to know what you are dealing with in Trump than trying to work out what the hell Clinton is. Its amazing how much people are willing to do if they want power so bad, so surely its better to see their faults on a plate (Trump) than wonder how dangerous they can be....Clinton

If Trump is such a fudgewitted macaron how come he has become the number 1/2 candidate for the whitehouse? the more educated masses screaming from the heavens, the masses that stood against him, all proven wrong, I am not defending him I am simply asking the question? So why?

I am not asking for long winded responses, but if someone can give me a short sensible reply to why Trump is doing so well....I am all ears

The best answer is can give is that he in much the same was that Corbyn acts as a focus point for the disenfranchised through to the lunatic fringe in left wing politics so does trump in terms of right wing politics. Neither politician has suitable gravitas , intelligence or experience to be a world leader. Both would be an unqualified disaster if they got elected. As for how Trump has got this far, vast amounts of money plus don't forget Sarah Palin.
