2022 World Cup... gonna ruin the European Season

Find myself somewhat excited about the World Cup, at the same time wondering what that says about my ethical build as a human being.

The whole thing is just a travesty, symbolic of the corruption, greed, carelessness and impotency both of FIFA, but so much more of our world and us as human beings.

To have this coincide with a lacklustre meeting on climate change, the war in Ukraine, the rise of populist (proto) fascism many places. It's all a bit much, at least there's the joy and distraction of a World Cup...

Can only hope on the football and FIFA side of things there will be some lessons learnt and some progress made from all this chaos. Can't get myself to feel optimistic about that.

Just got through it. Good watch but I was furious and sickened throughout. Greedy, middle aged men in fudging suits making millions at the cost of football. This is our game, not theirs. Im fuming over it.

Sorry, I know I am on my soap box and virtue signalling a bit but it makes me sick. My young lad has got the sticker book and is trying to get me to watch it but I don’t think I can watch any of it.

Really thought I’d mellow out as it got closer but I’m more upset at this than at any stage up to now.

Same, and I know I've bored people.on here with my rantings and ravings and like you they have got more intense the closer we have got I just can't stomach the idea of a festival of football at the highest stage, being held with a sign up saying "no gays allowed" what sh1thole of a world do we live in when we allow that on an official basis. Its bad enough that we live in a world of Tommy Robinsons, it's ridiculous that we give a bunch of them a platform like this to breed hate officially

Personally I don't think either of you have to apologise for soap boxing, virtue signalling or boring people with rants.

Quite on the contrary I appreciate it.

Have been getting into some of the World Cup stuff through podcasts mainly, trying to get excited. Several of them have been quite good on highlighting the corruption, human rights abuses, abject treatment of migrant workers etc. I think it's warranted and needed.

I'm a bit interested to see how the mainstream media treat these issues during the actual competition. Would honestly want it to be brought up rather frequently, with respect, even before and during games. I'm assuming many media outlets will not give it what I would think is enough time. I can only applaud others, regular people, for giving it some of the attention it deserves.

It really does feel this tournament could descend (in many ways) into chaos.

Would be interested to hear how you think this may descend into chaos.

I've been feeling rather the opposite, that this will descend into a much too bland, ordinary World Cup that obfuscates all of the issues we all have with this.

Guess it depends on what you mean by chaos.

FIFA really are in the middle of what a good deal of football fans think is right and what the Qataris think is right BUT have absolutely no clue how to play that roll, especially when under a spotlight. The hypocrisy and faux concern they show, clinging on to the hope the beautiful game can, on its own, create a desert mirage that will divert the attention, and difficult questions/situations they constantly embarrass themselves dealing with.

That Infantino speech certainly left the impression of absolute clulessness.

I think the principle that football and sports can be a force for positive change is correct. Unfortunately, like with many things with the power to positively influence things, that power to effect change can be used to influence things for the worse.

FIFA look absolutely happy to be hypocritical as long as the show and the money keeps churning. Faux concern for what they're doing, the impact they're having.

They've put themselves in a really difficult spot awarding this thing to Qatar. They've then really not handled that difficult spot well at all. I'm sure you're right, both FIFA and Qatar hoping that football itself can be enough of a distraction once the ball starts rolling. I just hope they're proven wrong on that.

Any sign of heavy-handed policing, particularly involving LGBTQ+ fans, and there will be huge pressure on that fans’ team to walk.

Have to admit my first thought reading your post was "would they really be that stupid?"

Then I realised I've probably underestimated the likelihood and variation in ways this could end in chaos. Cheers. Not been thinking much of this angle.

My brain sometimes... "Would police be that stupid". On this issue... What a fudging thought to produce. Living up to my username at least.

You've just described one of our biggest failing as a species.

My two lads keep pushing me to change my mind and watch it, but I won't. We need this to fail badly if there is to be any change.

Stay strong brother, I'm sticking to my guns, a day of watching the darts for me today
