2022 World Cup... gonna ruin the European Season

Have to admit my first thought reading your post was "would they really be that stupid?"

Then I realised I've probably underestimated the likelihood and variation in ways this could end in chaos. Cheers. Not been thinking much of this angle.

My brain sometimes... "Would police be that stupid". On this issue... What a fudging thought to produce. Living up to my username at least.

My mate just sent me a note saying that apparently as a cover up on the deaths of workers they ruled literally every death as heart attack or heart failure, not sure how true that is but if it is, then any cover up is possible

To be fair they aren't the only government to do that, we've been lied/misled over covid deaths, and figures for the deaths in the great smog in London were false.

You've just described one of our biggest failing as a species.

My two lads keep pushing me to change my mind and watch it, but I won't. We need this to fail badly if there is to be any change.

I'm probably just trying to justify and rationalise my own actions, motivated by the wish to watch the football.

Is there any way of watching it that would be ethical, or more ethical in your view?

I know the broadcasters here in Norway have justified their decision to broadcast by saying they will use the opportunity to highlight the issues involved. Could more of us that are angry about this engaging in a positive way, asking for more and better coverage of the many issues involved, be a good thing?

It won't fail on viewership numbers involved alone I think. Will a failure, or any issue that arises be more impactful with a higher viewership?

Could those of us more angry and more upset about the whole thing disengaging make it easier for FIFA and Qatar to present the sugar coated spectacle they want?

I find your stance admirable and honestly superior to my own. Please don't read this as an attempt to change your mind. Just curious about your views and the views of others on this.

They have spent $300 billion on this exercise so far. Absolutely anything is possible during the course of this thing and there will be a guarded narrative to follow on and off the pitch.

If they are happy for people to die…..

There seems to me little chance that Qatar will lose today. The game has already been rescheduled to suit the Qatari authorities and not fifa. My view is that the variables that can be influenced will have been wholly corrupted.

Wonky VAR lines, match officials (who will be resident in Qatar in years to come), and of course my favourite, carefully managed doping controls failing to capture nationally sanctioned doping programmes.

It will be clearly seen as a mistake in many years to come but this tournament is likely to be peak FIFA one way or the other.

I don't judge you for wanting to watch it or anyone for wanting to because there is a very possible are to disconnect from where it is held and focus in on the football alone, I am just on abit of a personal journey with this. I have a number of gay friends, worked in an industry for 20 years which is probably the biggest employer of those from the LGBT community and I have seen first hand the journey they have had to endure to this point, I have also seen the power of inclusiveness that can be achieved, so I just can't accept the idea that the worlds biggest festival of sport is being held under a non-inclusive banner which effectively excludes a large % of the human race. Its no different to apartheid in South Africa and I honestly believe the sport should have done the same thing as those in the 70s and boycotted the bigotry that exists in Qatar.

I have a feeling a lot of those questions are playing out as an internal debate in your head right now. ;)

Everything I write now will probably feel like a personal attack on you and others watching it, but please don't take it like that. It is just my opinion.

For me there is no way to view this without feeling like I am selling out. All of us make unethical choices in daily life constantly. The food we eat, the pollution we cause, the causes we support or ignore, etc. We compartmentalise these choices as we must do, especially where there may be limited access to other options, but mostly as it is just convenient to do so. Watching the world cup however is something I fully control, and if I somehow justified to myself watching it for whatever contrived reason who would I be fooling?

The PR around this WC already is already going wrong in all sorts or ways and this will only snowball through the tournament I would guess. Their attempt at sports washing has already failed in my opinion but it is unlikely it will have any lasting effect unless something more serious happens, maybe even something on the pitch.

And so it starts.

Absolutely no idea how that Ecuador goal has been ruled out for offisde....well I think we might!
