2022 World Cup... gonna ruin the European Season

Dont want France to be world cup holders in football and rugby at the same time - the latter is inevitable next year, so good that Messi looking sharp

Modric is perhaps the best midfielder in his generation. He's a fantastic player to watch, just brilliant. Sad to see him walk off at what must surely be his last world cup, but what a show he's put on for these games. Still right up there.

Then there's Messi, even better. Even with Modric shining as brightly as he does, Messi is still just a level beyond, beyond anyone.

One more game for Messi. Probably one last chance at the biggest one. Win or lose, what a player, what a performance.

Argentina well deserved winners. If it's France that will be a more difficult test, but Messi...

The Argentine players look like they are playing for their lives, not just for Messi to finally win the World Cup. Ronaldo’s main attribute is that he is a goalscorer, a bloody good goalscorer and one of the best ever but Messi more than matches him in that regard AND he’s a playmaker and influences the game more. They are both brilliant but it’s not even debatable anymore if Argentina win the World Cup. Even if they don’t, Messi has proven he can win outside of Barcelona and has arguably been the best player at the tournament. He’s now reached 5 finals for Argentina, granted he’s only got one winners medal so far but he’s lost two of them on penalties so it doesn’t wash anymore to say he doesn’t turn up for Argentina or when he doesn’t have Xavi or Iniesta alongside him.

Certainly, Messi is the better player. Has there ever been a doubt? However, do you factor in Messi being allowed to inject a performance enhancer? I don't think you can separate who he is as a footballer from his use of HGH. It is unclear if he is taking the drug now, it is permissible as an ongoing medication to treat his condition, for example, if injured, a doctor may believe he needs the hormone to heal as another person would. It is a bit like cyclists who cite breathing issues/asthma so they can use performance enhancers.

I’m not a fan of Ronaldo, but you can’t knock his achievements. I just think Messi influences the game more in a nutshell.

I thought the hormone stuff was due to his height or lack of it and he needed a ”boost” for want of a better word? He’s still diminutive after the hormone treatment. I’m not sure how it would enhance his dribbling ability, vision and range of passing.

Dribbling ability for sure. Hormones are banned in sport for a reason. They are "performance enhancers". Would Messi be the player he is today without the hormones? I don't think there is any doubt at all that he wouldn't be.

I am happy he is this freak footballer that exists. A true one-off. The world would be poorer without him. But if comparing him, maybe this is a factor to take into account.

I don’t know enough about the HGH stuff to make a fair comment really.

I see Rooney and Modric have said Messi is the GOAT. Even Ronaldo’s former teammates think Messi is better. I’d say there have been periods of their careers where Ronaldo was more effective but overall Messi is the more complete player and contributes more in creating chances and assists. If he wasn’t one of the all time greatest goalscorers we would be waxing lyrical about what a great passer he is. I really hope it’s either Argentina or Morocco who lift the trophy on Sunday.

He is clearly the best player playing at the moment. To what degree drugs have influenced that is a matter of debate. But they are banned for a reason!

Saiss should have never started this match. Goal was due to his lack of mobility. Bad call by the manager. Shouldn't have let the sentimental stuff interfere with the team selection.

Edit: Giroud's shot that hit the post was due to Saiss
