Destiny Udogie

Note Udogie is younger than 21 and has lots of room to grow. He will make mistakes. My worry would be if he doesn't have the hunger to grow. Ange stated in a recent interview that he has the hunger. That is enough for me.
Is the 21 and 22 in a month?

He needs to learn whilst playing
Like a lot of players
That’s the key but that is also where we can get hurt

For someone his age he is very good

He has excellent technical ability on the ball and we can all see his physical strength.

His weakness at the moment is letting a wideman twist or turn away from him in tight spaces (as we saw yesterday, and iirc at Brighton)...it's always when a player fools him to think they're coming inside then squirms their way to the byline on his outside.

Also a couple of times I saw him not busting a gut to get back when we were countered. BUT I have tempered my annoyance of this when reflecting on the sheer amount of up and down Ange demands of you, so occasionally, just occasionally you might be on the limit at that moment...blowing out our arse has happened to us all:)

It would be an interesting exercise to see how he played, and defended as a bog standard LB in a back four. To test his defensive skills/abilities. At face value it looks like he has a bit to learn in this area BUT if most of your defending is done while scampering back the defenders viewpoint is different.

The other point to remember is there are plenty of high level right sided wide men in this league, so the learning curve is tough.

Fully agreed.

I think most of the time, in most situations, he's a really good full back defensively. But he has his vulnerabilities, as should be expected at that age and from a player with that kind of attacking quality.

As afsoc said, if he has that hunger nothing really to worry about. He has the tools to be a top level full back and fits the inverted style really well.

His vulnerabilities are decision making
Hopefully that is age
It’s something that he doesn’t always get right at both ends of the pitch

Great post.

This is as much a test of how good the management team are at nurturing. You see a player that has some really great raw ingredients but is making basic mistakes. That makes you ask the question what is happening on the training ground, and also with the video analysts at club.

You could easily pull together a reel of all of the fouls that Destiny has given away this season and sit down with the kid and ask him what he thinks he is achieving by continually bundling into players. Explain to him how his own team loses momentum as the opposition slows everything down. Then show him the risk to our own Goals Against column based on defending more set pieces than is required.

Then there is the piece you talk about. Positioning is everything and he gets his centre of gravity all wrong defending on his weaker right foot. That is where training ground drills have to come into the equation.

It would be interesting to see Ange and his coaches individual development plan for Destiny. He simply has to improve in a few areas. I also think when we replace Davies with another new player we'll see Destiny's levels come a up a little naturally. We need proper competition for places in all positions.

Needs competition/upgrading
+ Coaching to defend first. The mistake yesterday was him trying to control the ball and poke it around Bowen which failed and then left him on the wrong side. This is clearly an Ange instruction because Porro and Romero also do this, as had Bentancur at times in the box. Hell all of our players when in our own box are guilty of this so it's a coaching instruction. A very high risk one, but one Ange clearly wants.

It’s too common an issue though
And we saw the switch off last game
I’m hoping it’s age and experience

I hear you but watch all of our defenders, they are all guilty of it. So unless we've managed to sign a singularly stupid group it's the instruction from above to always play to control and pass.

It’s an experienced bunch in reality
The senior head is Romero and I don’t think he is a “clear head or leader” myself

His cut back for Bissouma was excellent, but he does need to show that more often. I would like to see him take players on more as well.

I just hope we can get Spence in to rotate and we don't over play him.
It was
But he could have played a left foot cross across the box. He took the extra touch and it worked
He really reminds me of rose and walker when they were developing their game
Some highs and lows

Exactly right, 21 and one of a line of talent for the future, we are gonna have to take the development years infront of our eyes, its what we have purchased for.

I agree, his ability is massisve [ for his age] and like most young players he will have ups and downs. We have a player here who could be huge for us over the next few years we have to give him that time to develop fully.

Udogie, Sarr (yes, I know he had a bit part season before), VDV all walked into first team last season and pretty much were good for most of season.

Form, dealing with how team adapt to you, lack of experience will lead to occasional bad runs.

He's had a poor couple of games defensively, but the setup for Biss was very good/smart

It is a risk model

- when it occurs because the opponent has done well, you have to accept.
- the I just switched off brick is the stuff we need to coach out (and I'd say the improvements against stuff like corners show we have been working on something)

He's a young player, there's going to be dips in form. Also, for a defender it's not just on the training ground it's also getting match expereince. Very few players are great defenders at that age. They usually look better going forward and the defensive side improves with that experience.
