Really? A 'credible person'?

Cancer Patient Housing: Donates 10% of his Tottenham Hotspur salary to the Father Roberto Lettieri Institute (Instituto Padre Roberto Lettieri) in Barretos, São Paulo, which provides free housing, meals, transportation, and support for cancer patients and their families undergoing treatment at the Hospital de Amor.

COVID-19 & Flood Relief: Distributed thousands of food parcels, funded oxygen cylinders for hospitals in Manaus during severe shortages, and provided care packages during regional floods.

Public Advocacy: Uses his platform to speak out on social issues including racism, poverty, police brutality, LGBTQ+ rights, gender violence, and environmental protection

Yeah. I think Richy's done more than enough to show he's a 'credible person'.

I stand by what I said Steff. This social media offload stuff is incredibly important in our society and is getting worse. You can be an absolute saint in life (as you show above) but when the pressure is on you personally then you still need to show as much credibility. Richi didn't, like so mnay others. He just ran to social media, vented and in my opinion massively let himself down. It is therefore a question mark on his credibility under pressure. That's often when it is most important in life.

Be interesting to see whether he has one of those clauses "The views posted on here are those of the individual and not the employer etc...". We used to be given clauses to add to our social media in corporate that both reminded us that we should always behave well and also protected the brand of the companies we worked for.

The other problem is Richi didn't just do it once. Within a week or so he was goading Roberto with his follow up. He'll do it again no doubt.

I agree with you. First of all, very happy to state Richy is a good person. And also to say that the actual words used in his posts aren’t egregious on their own.

But it’s the context that makes them very bad. For someone in his position there are simply higher standards of behaviour expected in that moment, and he failed to meet those standards.

Even if you agree with his stance of not wanting to be told where to move - and frankly I can see where he’s coming from - I’m just not sure why it needed to be broadcast on social media? Could it not have been communicated directly to the clubs?

He was getting flak for scuppering the Ndiaye deal - i can see why he felt the need to put his side out.

I get that it might have been his intention to put his side out, but his statement didn’t buy him any good will from any side. If anything, he all but confirmed that it was him that stopped the deal?

I remember seeing on this thread that the club should have made clear the deals were separate, but the initial report from Ornstein states that they were separate deals. So that was clearly what was briefed.

All these weeks on I’m also still none the wiser of what Richy actually wanted? Willing to go to Everton but not like that? Didn’t want to be treated as a makeweight? Didn’t want to be forced to take a wage cut? (Whether that’s even true?) my point is - the statement didn’t help clarify his side at all. It made things worse for him and for everyone. And that’s precisely why footballers are expected to not head to social media to offer running commentary when clubs are trying to work out a multi million pound deal.

This is a little bit of revisionism for me. Richi put a thinly veiled threat (implied to be towards THFC) out on social media that he would decide his future and people in the past had created him issues. The Ndiaye angle wasn't the reason that this thing blew up. I don't thing anyone would blame a player for another player not moving. We all know the football business.

It was the undermining of his own club, our club, that was the tension point.

You mean acting like a "professional" in your job and respecting your employers. GHod forbid.

After seeing so much stuff about him, I'm worried he's going to have another breakdown.
He had one back in 2022—it really sucks—and it could happen again.

Yeah, hopeful that he has continued the therapy that he talked so highly of a couple of years back. Whilst his mental health equation doesn't make what he did right for me, it can explain a headspace and behaviour. Richi has openly spoken about his depression in the past and nobody wants to see him go back there again.

Danny Rose spoke about the toughest part being not playing. That is where Richi finds himself, albeit not with an injury, In some ways, that might make it harder. Hugo had to draw on his mental fortitude when our club put him in a position where he had to run down his contract and not play. He was even sitting with his family at a restaurant on transfer deadline day when Spurs were trying to offload him to Toon to sit on their bench on loan. No doubt he probably had his phone switched off.

Wouldn't it be great if all footballers followed the Modric, Hugo model and just spilled the beans much later in their autobiographies.

disregard everything that was said on social media, there were many offers for richy but he refused all of them. so many left last window without any issues.

I'm sorry, you said 'a question mark on his credability under pressure'? Mate, I stand by my view that this is a nonsensical assertion. Pressure...I'd say the lad knows a thing or two about it both in life and football. Add to that his openess regarding mental health and it is clear we did not handle any of this properly and it is a giant fudge-up.

Never forget, the first to take this to the public was De Zerbi early-tour, who essentially threw it all on Richy ('one day he wants to be here, one day he wants to leave'). And you talk about goading? I say keep that brick IN-HOUSE if you want it to stay in-house.

As you said, these are our opinions so respect to them and for standing by them. However, for the record again, I royally disagree with you on this one.

It is unimportant what he did or didn't want. It is irrelevant to us. What is relevant is we had a situation brewing since the summer which we -as a football club- mismanaged, with a player we know to be emotional, and we either mishandled it or were unconcerned about watching him flop around like a fish out of water. It is a terrible way to treat an employee.

The only thing which would tilt my view is if I found out that we had spoken with him and his reps about discretion and keeping quiet/doing things behind closed doors. If that had been had, then he has been disrespectful of a process. Again though, DeZerbi dragged him into it publicly during the summer (when he did not reply BTW). Yet we still poked him with a stick...

It's debatable to me as he adds an many problems if not more then he solves and he's doesn't even solve anything.

I think give Marmoush a season up top and he can match Richy's numbers, quite easily imo. Richy doesn't actually score many.
Well, you won't have to think, we're going to see and hope (BTW totally different strikers but as you were)...

I believe then we are back in the place of this debate where I remember being a few weeks ago…I don’t know the right answer but I question exactly how much accommodation a professional club, one of the top 20 biggest clubs in the world, must make for someone who is known to be emotional? At what point do you just expect a standard of behaviour?

I also think had he simply turned down the moves but not taken to social media, he probably would have been registered. As it was, the combination of the repeated changing of his mind, the social media posting and no move being good enough for him has landed him in this position.

I know your position is that we should have told
him to sign or leave much earlier in the summer. Again I’m not sure why the club should not be allowed to try and convince him to stay? Clearly they let most players go who wanted to, but with Bergval they made an effort to keep him which worked. I think at some point they lost trust in him / he said he firmly wanted out and would not stay. Either way, I would have sympathy for Richy if it comes out that he had said he absolutely wanted to stay, and we banked that commitment, and then we turned around and tried to offload him in part exchange. That would be very bad. Otherwise, I think he must have been the only player this summer that took to social media to criticise their club during a transfer negotiation. And to that I say, what was so egregious about the club’s treatment of him that they deserved that? I don’t think being emotional is an excuse, unless there is a big piece of the story we are missing here.
