Cristian Romero

I 100% believe the defensive principles we had installed in us for the last couple of seasons were counter intuitive to the natural instincts of our CBs and thus they'd make uncharacteristic errors due to them being out of their safe space mentally.

We might see it as Romero turning off but I think it's because he's too busy thinking about the intricacies of the shape and positioning of the line that Ange wanted implemented.

Yeah, I know this is a Romero thread but I'm not really just talking about one player. I'm talking about the system that impacted loads of our players over the last 2 seasons. Those situations where Romero and VDV were injured and it was Dragu, Gray and Davies trying to play artificial lines in very deep positions. Then, one of our defenders or even our own midfielder would break our line and we'd be in trouble.

I think you're getting my point actually. It is the players brains being scrambled because they are instructed to find an offside line rather than go to mark their man, run with them or pivot behind and end up in a sweeping position.

Thought he was awful tonight, was it really him that was pressing their keeper and left a huge hole that Bentancur had to fill and concede the corner wolves scored from?
And why did he take a goal kick to Vic who was clearly not ready and invite pressure on us.
As for that "attempt" at goal, ludicrous.

Romero has got "main character energy" i.e. when he sees the limp attacking efforts in front of him, eventually he just thinks "sod this" and charges forward himself, rampaging and frolicking and chasing lost causes.

It's odd how he runs with a limping, loping gait like he can run 20 yards but after that he kind of lumbers around in a strange way.

Not a lot wrong with Romero, unless you are comparing him to mythical perfect centre half.
That's how I felt about his performance. Not sure what people are complaining about. We had some poor performances but I didn't really his was one of them unless we are expecting literal perfection and him to be the instigator of our attacking play which is unrealistic.

As one of the best passers we have, he is absolutely that. Where he gets let down sometimes is by slow movement of our attacking players/midfield breakers.

To be honest, I didn't mind that at all...we were a bit out of ideas at that point and Bentacur filled in as Romero moved forwards, that's shows understanding within the team. Also shows leadership that he was trying to drag the team to be more aggressive like a captain should.
I thought he played well to be honest. And I loved how he flattened that giant monster of a CF they brought on late in the game, when everyone else looked intimidated by his sheer size.... Romero was like "No you don't!!! POW#!"

I'm the same, but then again I don't mind defenders going a bit rogue. With Bentancur and Palhinha in midfield Romero or VdV doing something a bit unorthodox and attack minded at times seems like a good thing.

He's also one of rather few players who mostly keeps his composure when others are getting rushed, like after that goal. He's able to help change the tempo somewhat , injecting a bit of aggression like with that pressing or slowing it down when we're panicking. Didn't work in this instance, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't try.

But he's a CB, he has a great passing range yes but it should never be the CB's job to instigate play. That should be a nice bonus to have, a great feature in addition to creativity further forward.

If we end up criticising a CB for the lack of killer passes and general poor team passing rhythm then something has gone very wrong with the structure and blend of the team and system.

In principle I pretty much fully agree. Only possible disagreement that it's more than a nice bonus. CBs often see more of the ball than other players, having quality ball playing CBs is mostly a necessity at the highest level.

I think the lack of those qualities elsewhere has been a real problem for us for several years now. And we're trying to rectify that in the transfer market in the last couple of years particularly.

I also think it's pretty much the weakness Frank has kinda chosen to have at this stage. Solidity first, focus on defensive strength and set pieces. But I really hope the plan is to develop those other aspects of our game too over time.

I thought he was blowing for a while after he ran forward to press their goalie before that corner that led to the goal. Might have to re-watch but i thought he looked too knackered to move as he normally would when their corner was being taken and i thought in the end we paid for his "randomised pressing"...

It was good to see Bentancur automatically fill in for him position-wise when he bombed forward though, seems top be a common theme under Frank which is great for balance

The latter part is spot on
But I also think the set up with Bents and Pauhlhina meant we didn’t create as much
It’s the balance that’s needed at home

Trying to make up his atrocious free kick along the back line that gave the ball away, totally lost his head, went chasing lost causes and left a huge hole.

Nothing has 'gone' wrong, he has been one of the best passers in the team for several years. FWIW I don't disagree with you, just pointing out what is a truth for us.
