Cristian Romero

It feels to me that this plus whoever he wants or doesn't want as boss will go a long way to him not pushing for a move...

I've said before, I don't think Ange is Romero's ideal boss. Nothing to do with whether they get on fantastically or not. I hope they do. It was a comment about which tactical system would optimise Romero. I think I'm right in saying he joined us having come from a 3 at the back system. I also think Argentina have a defensive structure way different from ours. Him and Otamendi (at 34) were immense in the world cup. The full backs were orthodox and the midfield pivot allowed Romero to do his thing.

On the personal side, I do think Romero would appreciate Ange being in his corner with the international debate that carries on year after year.

The real vote of confidence would be backing it up with a new contract

Not words on social media.

Not sure it's up to the players and even I, as one of the most vocal Ange supporters, am not sure that's the right thing to do. Ange needs to prove more within the first few months, then by December we can consider new contracts.

Would love to see him tried as a DM protecting the back four.

If you want that, you might as well play 3atb, then he steps forward and does that role with the play in front of him.

As @Muttley said, Ange's system doesn't particularly play to Romero's strengths, putting him in a foot race back to his goal doesn't help him. Giving him the play in front of him, letting him step out, bully attackers, cut stuff out early is his game.

Basically the Libero role. Honestly, there's probably minor or even negligible differences between the roles and how the player interprets the instructions for that role/position. Either way, it could be interesting to see Romero playing the defensive mid/libero and I know maybe half the people on this board have suggested it at some point. Imagine Romero roaming ahead of Danso and Van de Ven. We could be defensively solid along the ground and against crosses.

I fully agree it looks like a great fit, but…
Why happens we he is injured?
Why has no one tried it before?

It reminds me of the Porro in at 10 discussion before the final.

We’ve had Romero move into midfield and had Bentancur drop back to cover. I think that’s what we would see in future if Romero stays. It provides tactical flexibility and allows Romero the opportunity at times to be more aggressive.

We do have to make sure he stays. He is arguably our biggest star now. He deserves to be captain and to be highest earner at the club.

He can be absolutely brilliant, but I'd knock half a point off for sometimes charging out rashly and leaving a huge gap, I'd knock another half a point off for sometimes falling asleep if the game is not stimulating him, I'd knock a point off for being injured too often, which takes him down from absolutely brilliant, to very good i.e. not irreplaceable if we can get huge money.
I assume we'll keep him, given this last week.

Could not agree more.

I maintain that the main cause of his injuries is that when hr is available he is overplayed. Argentina don’t want to rest him, we have been reluctant to rest him. So he played for a long period of time every match that he was fit for. The only player that got away with doing that for us this season was Pedro Porro who must be looking over his shoulder now to see Elijah (Samuel L Jackson).

I fully expect that if Romero stays with us, he will suffer fewer injuries next season as he actually gets to have a summer break this year. I think that having a summer break will be huge for so many players through the league. I wouldn’t be shocked if players who were out of form this season for their respective clubs, due to being overplayed at international level over the previous summer, return to form.

And so with Romero, I think he will find his best levels this coming season and suffer fewer injuries. He will take us places and to continued success.
