Cristian Romero

I back Romero and think he will find his feet again with his performances. He’s not been his best but yesterday was his first full match since returning from injury. He needs time at the moment and patience. His first full 90 minutes in 4 months, his previous 90 minutes having been against Ipswich on November 10th.

Players don’t instantly return and go to best level performances. But he did make a significant difference defensively and this will only continue to improve as he gets more game time.

I think some people find a way to criticise him due to their personal narrative that Romero wants to leave. We don’t know this, it’s assumed for whatever reason by some to be true and there seems little basis for this. I’m sure people have their reasons for believing as they do but at least some assumption is included there. I think we back him fully as he is our player. I would say he is helping us the best that he can but I’m sure some would label that as an assumption so I won’t go there.

I back him and think he can be one of the best centre backs on his day and we need to help him to find his day more often and hopefully to further improve.
No it's got nothing to do with wanting to leave. I felt no different towards Bale or Kane when it was clear they wanted to go. Romero all too often runs around like a headless chicken and makes extremely rash decisions.

He actually is capable of top class performances, but too often he is unreliable. I'd love to say his two performances are due to him returning from injury, but it is nothing we haven't seen time and time again before unfortunately.....

My issue is his stupid decision making
Rustiness is his poor passing… he is imo the best passing CB around
The stupidity is him sliding in recklessly repeatedly
Or him just leaving his man nonchalantly
It’s what he did when he was up to speed

Yes, on his day he can be one of the best centre backs in the world. The problem is that his day isn't often enough. Too many times he makes poor decisions, chases the ball and runs out of position, walks away from players leaving them unmarked, and jumps into stupid tackles. This isn't just the last two games, it was the same before his injury. There is just too many flaws in his game. He's about to turn 27, he should be hitting his peak and have ironed out those flaws by now. It's unlikely he's going to improve at this stage.

It’s why no one will pay the fee we will want
He can be world class. We have seen it
But he can even play like that and still stop doing the most basic things

Great post. It can get really ugly when fans attitude towards a player turns which is what we’re seeing now.

Works both ways though
Romero can keep the fans onside by doing what he does well
He hasn’t done that yet. Hoping the games for Argentina will help

You criticise Romero here, but the problem is where is our LB? He's nowhere near the attacker and has left him in acres of space to play in. The CB has to go and challenge him. Now whether the challenge he attempted was the correct decision is debatable, but our crappy defensive setup is what put him the position where he had to make that split decision. This is a clear case of the system failing, not the player.

Yeah weird to blame Romero for that one - it was 3 vs 2, fair enough to take a gamble in that situation.

Also I thought some of his passing was exquisite yesterday.

What was this all about? Did Parrot foul Romero previously or talk schitt or something?

That’s not a challenge, that’s fudging stupid
Just stand up and make the attacker think
The left back was 5 yards ahead I’d him when he tried to smash the opposition player and missed

It was dumb
He slid in and missed the man
Second time in the same game too
Did it also vs Bournemouth
If he stood up and did what a smart CB would do… he would make the attacker think more

I can not agree more with that, it seems that some have made him the spacegoat without real reason to do so. Of course the game is about opinions and everyone has one but IMO we have far BIGGER problems to deal with than Romero.

Watch it again - the attacker is already playing the pass and Romero slides to try and block it.

Totally agree he’s too rash at other times though.

It was in front of me at the game
He is the forest gulp of charge backs
Got some real elite traits and some really stupid ones
