Mathys Tel

Every pass to him was intercepted or he got one touch before it was lost… he lost the physical battles right from the start. Wasnt tactual just a player who could t do the job in that game
Don’t forget we also started the game with no ball carriers in the team

So are you saying he's not got the required first touch and isn't able to play with his back to goal in the 9 position? From what I've seen, admittedly YouTube, but he looks like a ball carrier himself in forward areas. Not really seen enough to see what he's like when he's isolated and has a ball pinged into him.

I didn't see the City game but will try to look closely. I'm also assuming that if he came off after 66 mins, then he missed the 30 mins where it would have been best suited to him.

I’m saying in that game, he was poor at the basics. Impossible to tell of he has the touch as it’s so early

Not costing £60m
Don't forget the strange nuances of the deal.
The loan itself was EUR10m which is extremely expensive for 6 months, but we've already sunk that cost.
I think Bayern were clever with that... they stipulated quite a high loan fee, so we'll feel more obligated to follow it through in the summer.
The summer option to buy is EUR55m (which can stretch to 60 if we win everything ever)

So we already paid the big chunk, just £45m left to keep him forever, or we walk away... so in our Spurs minds it is just a £45m decision... then we get our financial calculators out and reckon it is only £9m per year for 5 years.... and then we think backwards and say "hell, we paid EUR10m for 6 months, so £9m per year is a steal... especially if we eventually sell him for a profit which is likely because he's only a kid"

So for all those reasons, we'll do the deal I think.

Or he breaks his neck and goes into a coma. We might think ok we spent €10m but €9m a year for a carrot is a bit much.

19 years of age and has played 3 games in a different country and already he is being written of by some fans, i despair some times i really do.

I don’t think anyone are writing him off - people are merely suggesting he will have to step up for the next few months to warrant us splashing 60 mill or whatever on him. That’s obviously harsh on the kid, but what else have we to go on? Spending 40 mill on Gray seemed steep, but he has performed for us since day one. Can we afford taking the gamble on Tel at that price? Would be very sensible with another loan if we could get one imo.

With Solanke due back soon and our forward players returning to fitness, I'm wondering whether Tel will get enough game time to show his potential.

Is he as good a prospect on the wing as the guys we have in waiting ie. Odobert and Moore?
Presumably Odobert and Tel will have played together through all the age levels for France and in French youth teams... Odobert went to Burnley and Tel went to Bayern... I think Tel is a good prospect.

@Daisuk It is £45m not £60m as I painstakingly explained above

He can play on the wing. It's where he's mostly played in his career.
Even fewer chances for that, what with Wilson, Sonny, BJ, Werner, and Deki all candidates to play wide. And that's not counting Mikey, who I suppose will see less game time anyhow.

Sorry mate, not sure how I missed that. I like your reasoning, and think you're probably right!

The reason I ask is because let's say he does end up on the wing moreso than the middle it's the squad quite lopsided in terms of attackers we'd have Son (who is still first choice), Odobert, Moore and even Solomon plus Tel for the left sided berth whereas the right only really has Johnson now. Kulu is far better in the middle and Ajayi has never been seen again since his cameo.
Maybe Yang is a real option for next season but that remains to be seen. .

So I'd rather spend that remaining 45m towards a right sider attacker rather than another left sided cut in player. Of course if the interior is for him to be a central guy then the ability to play on the left (and right) is a nice bonus.

No idea. His price tag suggests the scouts see something.
How much of that is because he's young/french/forward - every one wants the next mbappe.

I am not sure we should be spending £60 million on him going on what we have seen so far, but hopefully we know one way or another if he's worth it in a couple of months.

If we do have £45million burning a hole, I would prefer us to use it on delap

I think it needs to be remembered that 60m isn't some figure thats just been plucked out of the sky - it was a figure that has been agreed by Spurs, the recruitment team would have seen copious amounts of data and footage on Tel. He is one of Europe's big prospects, most on here have barely seen him and are basing their judgements on a 19 year old in a foreign country after a couple of games. Looks at Kulu's start, Bergvalls etc Spurs recruitment know far far more than anyone here, Ange was very adamant on him and are prepared to invest in him long term. This few months is more about getting him settled into the environment and adapting to the physicality of the league, more than it's about 'proving he's worth 60m'.....

It’s the same money as a player who is arguably the best wide player on the planet after salah now (Kvaratskhelia)
And I’d also counter that there can’t be mega amounts of data on tel as he hasn’t had the minutes
We will see
I think the club will make it permanent because that’s what they have planned for
I just think for where we are at right now there is better, proven players for the same fee
