Mathys Tel

Looks good here below.
Note, some of those goals are the 4th or 5th or 6th in a drubbing, which frees up the soul when shooting.
Note, they say "and that is why Bayern paid £25m for him" so perhaps £60m is rather steep, a couple of years on. It's not like he ripped up the Bundesliga. Yet.

He's 19. What was kane doing at that age?

He's not going to be the finished product for another couple of years. Or even then.

He didn't do much against City, and looked to have worn wooden boots in the other matches he have played. I'm writing that off as over eagerness and nerves. He's been in the right places many times, so seems to have a nose for sniffing out where the ball will come. 19 years and new in the country, nevermind the pressure that comes with being hyped to this degree and touted as a 60 mill signing. That in itself is crazy. So hopefully people have some patience with him, especially people in the stadium and warriors of social media.

Having said that, I don't think it's stupid to engage in a discussion over whether or not we should fork out 60 mill for him, especially if his performances don't pick up. Hopefully they will though, and we'll have another gem of a young player on our books.

I'm neither for or against signing him long term but 60m is a lot for a player who isn't the finished or maybe not even the semi finished product yet.

By the nature of the deal we're having to make a snap judgment - in a few months we could end up dropping 60m on him so he'll be judged harsher/quicker between now and the end of the season

Deepening on how the season finishes out, we might it be wise to seek another loan for next season to evaluate over a longer period. Pretty unrealistic I know but something I'd try.

No harm in asking i guess, would free up some budget for RWF/CM.

If we're looking at 6 players to cover the front 3 positions then we're most likely looking at this

Son/Odobert
Solanke/???
Johnson/???

Where does Tel fit in to that? Is he ready to be an effective CF in the PL? Can he or Odobert play off the right (meaning both WF roles are covered)?

Don’t forget Moore and Yang

If recruitment model still includes these huge gambles then we can expect another ten years of going nowhere.

We will know by end of season. What we have now is a very highly rated youngster who has had experience at highest level

Where he is now, is where Bergvall was 4 months ago (remember the talk track, he needs to go on loan, etc. vs. now). Another dozen or so games and combined with what we don't see on the training ground should be a good indicator for club.

That was said on a podcast the other day
And is true
But Bergvalls fee is less than tels by about £50m
That has a big impact on the decision

I think the video analysis team will need to understand with Tel why he only had 13 touches in 66 mins in the City game. He doesn't seem the lazy type and he seems to have match fitness, so there must be a tactical reason why his stats were so low. It may well be that he wasn't coming deep enough or the other way round. Whatever he was doing, it didn't work in my mind and it will inevitably be tactical.

Once some root causes are known, there will be adjustments made with the player to get him more relevant on the pitch. Only after this assimilation period (10-15 games?) can we really start to see whether he's a good fit or not to this tactical system.

I can't call it at the moment.

Every pass to him was intercepted or he got one touch before it was lost… he lost the physical battles right from the start. Wasnt tactual just a player who could t do the job in that game
Don’t forget we also started the game with no ball carriers in the team
