Saying that, tonight will be a big test. I worry about him against excellent opposition. Has he got enough tactically to play against the best?

It's a test, but I wouldn't say Harry or AVB passed it with flying colours either. We were given several hammering's by the top sides under both managers, as well as picking up some decent results against those sides too. So if we were to get beaten, I don't think that would really prove that Sherwood is a big step down from those other two managers -- likewise, if we win it won't prove that he's a big step up (as those other two managers also got some good results against the best).

True. I don't like comparing to the past, but I think we got rid of Harry because he hit his ceiling and didn't have enough about him to really move forward. AVB did beat man u for the first time in 30 years when they steamrolled everyone last season, and ultimately with AVB, I got a sense of a system, with Harry, and to a lesser extent Tim, I feel it's a little more random, send them out and see what happens. Which concerns me. But I don't want this to be about AVb V Tim again, and I'm not saying AVB was amazing for us; but long term I sensed we were creating something. It's early days with Tim, if he can keep up the results to close to this level then none of us will have nothing to complain about.

did you get that sense of a system with AVB within a couple of months of him arriving or did it take a little while longer for you to see what he was attempting to do on the pitch? I think people are being way to quick to pigeon hole Sherwood as Redknapp mk II (in the negative sense, simple tactics - no real plan)

Bloody hell. That is a desperate stat to try and bash AVB and praise Sherwood. People select the tiny fragments to suit their agenda don't they? Anyway, I wasn't happy about Sherwood being manager, I thought early on he had a lot of lock and cam dup tactically short against Aresneal; but we were getting the results and ATTACKING so I didn't complain too much. Swansea was a a real eye opener to see he maybe has more than I thought. We have to support him, and not let his at times idiotic press conferences (though I do find him entertaining) and any prejudgements we had/have, support the team, support him, and maybe he could be a mini genius waiting to stout out. He's never done this before, been thrown in the deep end, and he's doing alright!!

Unfortunately it's not a level playing field to judge him on. The best sides ( regretfully ) have better players than us virtually man for man in every position. So to judge TS on these games alone is somewhat harsh IMO.

So 2.33 points per game? Versus the current run of 2.66 points per game? Of course, the longer term stat is more reliable than the shorter but this wasn't the point I was making anyway. I was pointing out that Sherwood's 6 game run is better than any AVB 6 game run.

Edit - the above said, I can't see where we picked up 28 points from a possible 36 at any point under AVB? Best that we managed was 25 from 36. The run starting after the 2-5 defeat at Arsenal. So more like 2.08 points per game. We'd virtually be on par with that even if we lost our next 2 games. 9 points from the next 6 would match it exactly over 12 games.

Didn't do at all if you read what I posted. I just stated a simply fact: AVB over 54 games couldn't manage any 6 game run to match the one we're currently on. Nothing to do with Sherwood who may well now flop and do a Juande Ramos but the point would still stand.

I think it was pretty clear form the off with AVB in all honesty. But he has experience and knows exactly what he wanted and got players (or did he) that he wanted for that. Tim has just come in with a group of players he didn't hand pick (or did he?) and it's his fast taste of proper management, so I didn't mean it as a full on criticism. From the fast batch of games and hearing him talk, I guess his "tactic" (please say it's a tactic) of making out he doesn't know any of our players or what they are capable of comes across al title worrying, as it's makes him look a bit stupid, same with the formations are ******** and it's all players etc. Its the same stuff Harry used to say and it worries me, like just send the best players out and more than not you'll win, I don't like this approach to football management. SAYING THAT, I do think it's more of a media performance, and hopefully, slowly, Tim will starting showing his tactical mettle. Swansea was a big boost with this; tonight will be the first proper test of it.

Can't watch the video in work, but my guess is he's spouting ****e that he knows a proportion of fans want to hear because it massages their 'I'm such and expert in modern football tactics and systems' ego in order to gain popularity.

yeah i wasnt Redknapps biggest fan but i acknowledge that most of the time the team was very well organised by Jordan, Bond and Redknapp and we were never really ripped apart on too many occasions. They usually got it right tactically

I'm starting to get very concerned Pirate that I'm agreeing with you on an almost daily basis There is no way Tim Sherwood should have any judgement made until he has had at least until the end of this season. He has done well so far and I have enjoyed the football he has got us playing. Tonight though we are facing a very special team.
