The race for 86 points

I just hope next season Harry and co realise that the season starts in mid August and not late September

It was October/November that did for us - 1 win in 10 - 4 straight draws in the league followed by 2 defeats in 4.

Its very harsh to judge but we just need to manage the dips we have slightly better because that period has cost us the league unfortunately.

Poch seems to have had us hitting our stride around decemeber these last two years and holding on to it for the rest of the campaign. Hopefully next year with a proper pre-season under our belts we will start better.

Sorry to nitpick but we didn't hold on to that form for the last 4/5 games last season.

Both Spurs and Arsenal have two Premier League games to play before they come to a head at the end of April, with the Gunners facing Middlesbrough and Leicester, while Tottenham face Bournemouth and Palace.

Assuming both sides win their two games – which is far from a given considering Arsenal’s current form – then a win for Spurs in the derby will extend the gap to 17 points, with Arsene Wenger’s men having only five games remaining, and a total of 15 points to play for.

Surely even Spurs can’t blow it this time, and confirming it with victory over the Gunners will make it all the sweeter.

The most telling paragraph of that article :p:eek:

I agree but i have thought for a while (7 years) that the gap was closing and over the last few years we were better, but didnt have the mentality or luck to finish above them. That once this happened we wouldnt finish above by a point but probably 10pts. The last few years we finished below them, they didnt finish above us.

This isnt to do with palace, its that they have zero confidence, we are the best team in the league, (chelsea had no europe that seems to be worth 10pts). Only one of arsenal's players could get in our team.

Could they beat us in a one off game, of course, will that make a difference, absolutely none.. If you had a million pounds what result would you bet on!

Have to agree with Afsoc. They will come to the lane either hurting from losing the semi final or buoyed with confidence after winning, Wenger always has them fired up against us. We went into the last NLD at the lane in good form whilst Arsenal were in a rut albeit not as bad as the one they are stuck in now but they gave arguably their most impressive away performance of the season.

I don't agree we are the best team in the league either, Chelsea are, not by much though.

I make us favourites for the NLD but lets not get too roostery. It only takes one fudge up from a defender or one Gerrard esque back pass to gift them a goal.

If Spurs were to lose the title by 2 points I would just think of Sunderland away and break down, we should have ended them. Especially as it was not like they used those 2 points to escape relegation :(

Under 21 tournaments might be pointless to you but not the Germans and the Spanish

Top flight first team players and those with full international caps shouldn't be involved.

KWP and Edwards are the right stage of development to be going to those things, but not now the likes of say Winks (or Kane 24 months ago).

One international cap does not an international make. If a 20 year old plays a full international it does not necessary preclude them from going back down to the under 21s. That is how players gain experience and more importantly learn about tournament football. The Germans and in particularly the Spanish do it all the time, did not do them any harm

Leiceter at home was worse for me

We never tested the subderland keeper but leiceter we literally gave the goal away and it was not through their hard work

Plus those players dropping down can help the progression of those around them at the national stage, which may include other Spurs players. Their experience gained through first team, and full Intermationals could certainly be of benefit to the others around them.

Indeed. How we never won that game 3-1 or better is beyond me. And at the time I think it was only their second away point of the season (could be wrong)

We should also remember the luck we had drawing up at City. Walker should have been sent off after conceding a pen only the ref missed.

Decisions do swing both ways Although they don't always balance out

Don't forget two years before when lampard was well offside and was in front of Hugo when aguero scored

The ironic thing about that table is a lot of noise has been made about how Man Utd have been unbeaten in all that time. :D
I wouldn't scoff at them. They're averaging 2.25 points/game. That would put them at 86 points in a full season, which is easily good for 2nd in any season and 1st in 4 of the last seasons.

I hate to say it, but I do think we'll finish 2 points short of Chelsea. But as I said before, it's the West Brom and Leicester games that I'd be ruing. Against Sunderland we didn't deserve to win.

When can we change the title of this thread to something more optimistic?

And jinx it all, you mean? :p

I was discussing with my mate who, of all players in the Premier League, would go straight into our current team. There really aren't many. The only thing we both agreed on was we'd like a Hazard type player. Not entirely sure who he'd step in for without making our team too attacking. Possibly Eriksen, but he's been pivotal for us in the last few months.

We could always do with better backup for certain positions, but the problem is obviously bringing in better players than the ones we have just to sit on the bench for larger parts of the season.

Conclusion - we have damned good team. If we can largely keep this group of players, and keep them happy, over the coming years, we're going to be on to something. Just a bloody shame about playing at Wembley next season. :(
