The Future Squad

I hate the idea of doing Chelsea a favour by paying big money for one of their academy players, they already lucked out with the fee for Mount. Why help them towards making what they're doing ok (by the current guidelines). Plus losing Skipp, PEH and GLC for that one player doesn't seem a great trade off, particularly if we get any kind of European football.

No movement on the forward line is interesting, upgrading Gill to a serious player to compete for a first team spot would be ideal as Solomon would be happy enough to remain as a squad filler.

I really don't get the Gallagher thing at all. He's just Lewis Holtby. Or Lamela without end product. If he wasn't homegrown he'd be a £15m player.

Gil and Solomon do seem much of a muchness. I think Gil maybe has a higher ceiling, definitely in terms of product, but could take longer to get there (obviously being 2 years younger too).

Todibo could be great, Dier needs upgrading. I imagine the majority of folks hadn't seen (or possibly even heard of) VDV before we signed him, given the evidence I'm confident that whoever we go for will be the right profile, style of defender and personality.

On the GK position, I appreciate that 99 teams out of 100 will have a drop off in quality from the first choice to reserve but it's a gaping chasm with Forster. Let's say just after the window closed next summer Vic gets a bad injury, no doubt people will pretend to be shocked and surprised crying misfortune but it'd just be bad planning.
Bad planning in the past, sure. But not necessarily bad planning now. We can't sort out all positions with first choice and backup players we're happy with within two windows.

Good planning now involves some priorities and "gambling" that we don't get punished in those areas we don't have good backup in.

Potential squad for next season? Just thinking what Ange and the club might do not necessarily what we would like to happen.

Vicario, Forster, Austin
Romero, Van De Ven, Todibo, Phillips, Davies
Porro, Udogie, Spence, Sessegnon
Bentancur, Sarr, Bissouma, Gallagher, Maddison
Kulusevski, Johnson, Son, Richarlison, Solomon, Gil

Forster and Austin are out of contract/get released in June.

And I don't think Spence and Sessegnon will ever play for us again.

But after CB, the like-for-like cover in those 3 positions definitely seems like the biggest gaps in the squad.

Still think a real quality left winger should be a priority.

Gil will never be a PL player, game is too physical for him, he has talent and will do well in Spain.

I like him as a player and do think he'd do well in our midfield but it's the thought of helping them lot out of the mess they've created. The end product was definitely there for his season at Palace!

Oh for sure, there's bigger fish to fry and I wouldn't have expected us to sort out all the issues in just one window under Ange but by next summer if we're in the same boat I shall be disappointed.

Around 7-8 new players needed (less if some academy lad, Veliz or someone can step up)?

Probably doable in two windows if we're clever about how we do things. And some cheaper solutions perhaps can be found for some squad roles. But new issues are always likely to arise and some signings probably will be duds. The "perfect squad" very rarely happens. But we should be a lot stronger when the next season comes around.

Do you think Ange and the club see it that way, 7-8 newbies needed?

I do
But not solely through buying
We’re already seeing some of the youth in the squad
In a 22 man squad 4/5 can be made up of youth players who Ange trusts
If we brought in the lad from Juve he would be technically a youth option as well as a first team squad player for example

Not necessarily. Was guessing based on what seems the opinions on here.

I do think we can read some things into Ange's selections though. Who he seems to trust and not trust so much. Particularly looking at who he chooses to bring on as subs, rotation options etc.

We'll most likely be in Europe next season. We'll need more players in the squad he trusts with real squad roles including starting some or even quite a few games.

Will be interesting next season to see if any more young players will be trusted to step up.
