The Academy, NextGen, U18 & U21 Premier League and On-Loan Thread

Somehow I think AVB's reluctant to use the kids in the EL. How would it look if you keep repeating the need to take the competition seriously but then send out the kids in that very same competition? I don't expect to see him play too many of them in those games. Capital One Cup might be a better bet, though.

Problem I have with not using kids in the Europa is that we're playing some players, like Vertonghen and Lennon, far too much. The impact comes later in the season when they're knackered...

Absolutely, but playing the kids leads to us continuing to treat the EL as a tinpot competition, and being both unable to play two games a week with the same intensity (due to lack of practice) and left with a decreasing UEFA co-efficient. It's a Catch-22, of sorts.

Nottingham Forest want to extend Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas' loan

Last Updated: October 28, 2012 9:31am

Jenas' initial one-month loan spell at his first club came to an end after he scored during Saturday's 4-1 victory away to Barnsley.

The midfielder has made four substitute appearances since rejoining Forest and the England international has been praised by O'Driscoll.

With his prospects of regular football uncertain back at Tottenham, O'Driscoll is keen to hang on to the 29-year-old for at least another month.

"Sometimes as a manager you are wary about taking a big name from the Premier League, which he is, but he's been first class," O'Driscoll told the club's official website.

"His attitude has been great, he's got great experience and we've used his opinion on things because he has an influence on the group.

"The initial first month was a suck-it-and-see thing for both parties.

"We'll have to revisit it over the weekend and see where we go but we'd like to keep him if we can."

Makes sense to give him another month there, good to see him getting form back. With Parker returning, Huddlestone getting better each game (from what I've heard on here, didn't properly see the Saints game) and Livermore and Carroll also wanting games think it suits both parties to let him build upon what he's done there.

Verts looks knackered already. He was immense in those early games but now he seems to have hit a wall.

It seems like, instead of pacing himself at the start of the season as he might normally have done ahead of a long and arduous campaign, in his understandable desire to make a good impression at his new club, he went off like a rocket and now all of a sudden he's got very little left in the tank.

Please tell me I'm talking absolute gonads!

I also don't think eft back is his position, I think he'll continue to look awesome in central defence.

It's a tricky balance, I'm desperate to win things and much prefer AVBs philosophy than Redknapps. But I also believe in rotation. I really really hope we play our second string as much as possible against Norwhich. Fact is, if it isn't good enough to beat Norwhich in the cup, then it won't be good enough to win league games later in the season when our first team is injured/fudged.

----------------Lloris
Smith--Dawson--Caulker--Naughton
-----------Livermore--THudd----------
Falque--------Sigg---------Townsend
-------------Adebayor----------------

Is more than good enough to beat Norwhich. So we should play it. This rests most of the starting team against Southampton and Wigan.

Vigouroux snuck in under the radar. Did anyone pick this up back during the Barca game?

LAWRENCE'S LIFE-CHANGING JOURNEY

Posted 12 September 2012 12:57am

Young goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux will be taking to the White Hart Lane pitch on Thursday night having been on a unique journey.

The 18-year-old has just signed a one-year deal at the Club and is set to feature in the NextGen Series clash with Barcelona.

But just two years ago, such an opportunity would have seemed a million miles away as Lawrence completed his GCSEs at St Thomas More School in Wood Green, having been released by Brentford earlier that year.

It was then that the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation’s Education and Football Development Centre programme changed the North Londoner's life.

“I’d finished my GCSEs and wondered what I was going to do next,” said Lawrence, “then I decided to take this course because it enabled you to play football if you work hard in class.

“I always wanted to play football and try to get into the game, so I stayed on at college, did well in the games and got the opportunity to come here and try to become a better player.”

The Education and Football Development Centre programme, nominated for a 2012 Sports Industry Award, aims to directly address the high level of unemployment amongst young people today.

It sees the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation work in partnership with three local colleges to engage 16-18 year olds classified as NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) back into education using the hook of Academy-standard football coaching and regular matches with other colleges.

“A lot of the other students on my course have now gone on to University having completed all the units,” Lawrence continued.

“I wasn’t as academic, I was more of a footballer, but having a good education as back-up is probably the most important thing as you never know what might happen. You’re always going to need something to fall back on.

“The programme has changed my life and I would like to thank everyone who helped me get to where I am today."

Lawrence was between the sticks for the Nextgen Series opener three weeks ago, a 3-2 win over Wolfsburg in Germany.

And he insists the squad are full of confidence going into a game against the world-renowned name of FC Barcelona.

“We can’t wait for the game to start now. This is the big stage but we have to treat it as a normal game. We can’t let the nerves take control. But it will be good to have the crowd cheering us on.

“We’ve done our homework on Barcelona but it’s more about looking at how we play and doing what we’ve got to do to get the three points.”

It will be an unforgettable occasion for Lawrence, and one he believes he has proved is never out of reach for any young person.

“My advice to other young people who are not in education or employment would be to work hard and try to get into any college that you can.

“If they have an interest in sport, in particular football, then try to get onto one of the Development Centres at either Southgate, St Thomas More or Waltham Forest.”

smith gone on loan to millwall explains why he did not play last night

im very pro youth(and anti EU) and i would actually rest walker and have given smith his chance, done well for england under 21's i have loved the lad ever since the pre season game a few years ago.

Nothing against walker but the time for giving him a rest has clearly come often young players go through a little bad spell after first breaking into the senior team.
