The Academy, NextGen, U18 & U21 Premier League and On-Loan Thread

Ceballos heads home for #thfc now 6-3
Falque has now slipped home after Ceballos pass and it is 6-4

My bet is that our team is too light, U21 is more or less adults and opponents will be physically strong.

Why the hell is our team losing 5-1 and getting destroyed? Not saying the Saudi Sportswashing Machine players can't be good, but conceding 10 clear chances in one half and being 5-1 down...wtf?

sherwood.

joke...... but i would not expect a team that contained carroll, hall, smith, mason and falque to be 6-1 down against anybody their age

U18's beat Saudi Sportswashing Machine 4-0

I'm assuming they're still getting used to this new tournament format. It's unusual, to say the least, so they are able to be excused while they get to grips with it.

Still a tad disappointing, mind. At least it ended 6-4 instead of 7-1, or similar. The lads will have gained valuable experience as well, so that's good.

What is unusual about the format? Surely the game is XI v XI on a big patch of grass, something they should be used to.

From the composition of the side, I'd say a lot of them haven't played with each other in a competitive fixture for years, if they ever did. Plus, the under-18s would probably be disadvantaged by the bigger lads at the u-21 level. Plus,no one's probably sure how to treat these fixtures; like a Spurs XI game or as a legitimate league?

Add all this together and you'd probably be able to go some way towards explaining what just happened.

I didn't check the ages of the U21 side. Are many of them from the U18 ranks?

Assuming we continue to send players out on loan, its possible our U21 side will be a relatively young one using some of the older academy players and in turn the U18 side will use younger academy players. That would be good for the level of competition the players get, but we might need to get used to an occasional setback like today.

Judging from that, I'd say more than a fair few of our lads were from the U-18 side. I agree, the concept of allowing chances to the younger ranks is a good one, and will eventually pay dividends. However, we're going to have to wait a long while for the dividends to show. I wonder if our management will be happy with that.

Stuart Watson @Stuart_Watson
#itfc sub: Andy Drury on for Massimo Luongo (70). Good reception for Spurs loanee

I'm not bothered about results for the U21s and other youth teams. It is about experience and developing them. Sherwood and Inglethorpe have done a good job with our young players and if we see another couple push for places in the first team squad this season then we will have the best batch of youth players for decades.

I agree fully!

Although I would rather see wins than losses at any level (and I'm sure we will see plenty of wins) there's a lot of things that's more important at that age than the results.

Agreed. Results are not the most important thing and playing above age competition (16-17s in U18, 18-20 in U21) is better for development. You don't want them being out classed but losing a fair share of the games might make them work harder.

Anybody heard yet where our U21's will be playing Sunderland on Sept 1st.

Wouldnt mind doing a double header if its not too far from Enfield when we come down for the Norwich game

Luongo apparently excellent for Ipswich in their 1-0 at Watford tonight. MOTM, according to some.

Sounds as though Ipswich are dominating their games from midfield, with Luongo to the fore in helping them to play a possession game.

17 year old who scored at hat-trick against you at the weekend is in our squad for the game in Athens on Thursday, keep an eye out for the name, Adam Campbell. He is going to be special.

Best youth player we have had since Gazza, plenty have scored goals for fun at this level and gone on to nothing but he had it all, his passing, vision and touch are all excellent, very quick and a good finisher too. He's only about 5ft 2!

Won the Nike Cup MVP last year, previous winners include Febregas, Iniesta, Torres, Carlos Tevez.

Manchester United and Arsenal have already tried and failed to steal him.

On top of all of that he is a genuine nice kid, absolutely living the dream and giving his all to be the best he can, not one of these waster charver types.

Good news. Always felt a bit sorry for this lad, he was the young lad he missed the pen in the shootout at Stoke, but to his credit he had the b#lls to step up and take one, while a couple of 1st teamers stood back

A comment about Luongo on the Ipswich forum:

How good is that lad going to be?

Very early days but potentially i would suggest he could be the highest quality loanee we have ever had?

Probably the blue tinted glasses of an excellent evening but at times last night he reminded me of Frans Thijssen and surely there can be no higher praise than that.

Now we just need to land his Spurs mate Harry Kane for the rest of the season......

i like ipswich as a club and am glad we can help them out whilst they help our youngsters develop.. if we sign two more forwards, then maybe harry can head over there too.
