Football Association set for key vote on youth football
FA shareholders will on Monday vote on reforms to youth football, including the introduction of small-sided formats for certain age-groups.
Proposals include nine-a-side games on smaller pitches and smaller goals for under-11s and under-12s, and five-a-side for under 7s and under-8s.
In England, children as young as 10 currently play on full-size pitches.
The reforms are designed to emulate the emphasis on technique and skill in countries such as Spain where children are only allowed to play on adult pitches from under-14 level.
The proposals have been developed over a number of years, with consultations across the game.
Nick Levett, FA national development manager, said: "These changes are desperately needed to support the future development of youth football.
"We need to ensure children play on pitches appropriate to them, a 10 year is not half a 20 year old!
"We also need an approach to competition that makes the game more competitive for more children.
"The FA believes having listened to the grassroots game that these proposals are absolutely the way forwards."
Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand got involved in the debate on Twitter.
He tweeted: "One thing our kids coaches don't do that foreign coaches do is teach them to pass the ball to a player under pressure..then coach one-two.
"How to protect the ball under pressure..foreign players do that much better than us...one reason why they keep possession better.
"FA coaching courses need a right old shake up in my humble opinion if we are to move forward...some real good bits but some ancient bits too."
There are a total of 1120 votes that can be cast by shareholders, with County FAs key with 767 between them.
The FA needs 75% of the votes cast for the reforms to be approved, which will be introduced by the 2014/15 season.

Apart from the 5 a side for 7's and 8's the under 11's and 12's already play 9 a side down here.
