The Academy, NextGen, U18 & U21 Premier League and On-Loan Thread

This was under the radar a little. David Button has had his loan extended to the end of the season which basically means he gets to play in the last 3 games as well, of which he's played in 2 so one more game left on the 28th of April.

Sod it, if 4th has gone by the time the Fulham game comes around, give some of these Academy lads a game, I dont mean all X1, but say 3, possibly 4 of them. With 1 or 2 on the bench. Ideal scenario for the better propects to get a taste of First team action.
Would love to see Couilbaly in the sqaud

DAVID BUTTON (Barnsley) 06.04.2012 vs West Ham United (H) 0-4 (L) Championship (Round 41)
At fault for a few of the goals.

Winger David Cotterill played Button into trouble with a short back pass and when the goalkeeper's clearance rebounded to Noble on the left edge of the area, the Hammers midfielder curled the ball home in some style from a tight angle.

West Ham defender George McCartney's 20-yard shot was well saved by Button soon after the restart.

Button was at fault for 2 goals.

I think Steele would have saved all four despite Cotterill putting the keeper in bother twice (once with the bad backpass and the other being outpaced)

Goal 1 he should have commanded his six yard area. Keepers should never ever concede from a yard out. Goal 2 was nicely placed but his view wasn't blocked and it wasn't hit at pace. Steele would have got his body behind it. Goal 3 he thought he was Lionel Messi instead of clearing his lines. Goal 4 he saved right into the path of Vaz Te. Playing for first school at football our keeper was taught even then that when you save a shot make sure you get the ball out wide to make the angle harder. You don't parry it straight forward.

Goal 1 - he should have come for it, but the defence were at fault for not getting a header in Goal 2 - I agree, he should have saved it, but why did wasn't Maynard closed down? Goal 3 - should have put it into Grove Street. Bad decision Goal 4 - stretching for the ball. Really couldn't have done more with it.

Interview with David Button published today here.

I stay in touch with Spurs all the time. After every game, there’s contact with the coaches and the goalie coach, Tony Parks. They monitor my progress to see how things are going.

Brad and Carlo have next year on their contract, but they are getting older so there will be an opportunity there for somebody in the next year or so.

Hopefully, that will be me, but I have to see how the next year goes, by going out on loan and continuing to impress.

I’ve got another year on my contract so it’s a big summer for me. With a year left, I need to make some decisions as to what I’m going to do.

While I’m playing, I’m not going to think about that, but when it comes to the summer I’ll sit down with Spurs and see where they want me to go.

If they still have plans for me, I’ll be delighted to stay, but if not, I’ll have to look elsewhere.

DAVID BUTTON (Barnsley) 09.04.2012 vs Blackpool (A) 1-1 (D) Championship (Round 42)

Tom Ince's speculative lob beat Button but dipped wide of the far post.

He quickly pounced on the rebound only for Button to pull off a stunning fingertip save at his near post.

Angel Martinez sought immediate redemption for the Tangerines but his swerving drive was parried by the solid Button.

Button survived two late scares as a Phillips corner swung dangerously close to his goal, the on-loan Tottenham stopper punching clear, before Evatt spurned a golden chance to seal three points by inexplicably stabbing over the bar from six yards.

Button made some good saves and wasn't to blame for the goal.

I doubt we would try to sign Button as he is at a cross roads with his Tottenham career and he would be looking for a first team place rather than a second choice keeper.

DAVID BUTTON (Barnsley) 14.04.2012 vs Cardiff City (H) 0-1 (L) Championship (Round 43)
Last game of his loan spell as Luke Steele is still injured.

Luke’s definitely out so I’m hopeful we can sign David for longer,” Hill told the Sheffield Star.

“As far as I know, they don’t want to recall him. David is gaining valuable experience and game-time, so it would be great if could extend his deal.”

DAVID BUTTON (Barnsley) 17.04.2012 vs Hull City (A) 1-3 (L) Championship (Round 44)
Has had his loan spell extended to the end of season the day before this game, meaning he gets to play in three more games. Put in an excellent performance to keep the score down.

However, howls of derision almost turned to hoots of delight as Tom Cairney's free-kick - for which the play had been stopped - was fumbled into the path of Fryatt, who was somehow denied by the recovering Button.

Button 8, superb performance, saved us a right mauling.

DAVID BUTTON (Barnsley) 21.04.2012 vs Bristol City (A) 0-2 (L) Championship (Round 45)

City dominated the game after Stead's spot-kick, and could have scored twice more through the striker and Neil Kilkenny, but for two good saves by David Button in the visitors' goal.

The Robins should have extended their lead even further four minutes later, but Stead saw his point-blank effort from Albert Adomah's cross tipped over by Button.

Button stopped substitute Kilkenny's effort from close range as the home side eased to victory.

Button could have got a hand on the shot or it could have hit the post.

JORDAN ARCHER (Bishop's Stortford) 07.04.2012 vs Nuneaton Town (H) 0-3 (L) Conference North (Round 38)
Out injured again with a knee injury as Aldi Haxhia took his place.

Stortford, who brought in keeper Aldi Haxhia for Jordan Archer (knee injury).

New keeper was poor in view of his kicking.

JORDAN ARCHER (Bishop's Stortford) 09.04.2012 vs Hinckley Utd (A) 3-1 (W) Conference North (Round 39)
Still out injured as 17 year old academy keeper Matt Gill was given his league debut in place of Aldi Haxhia.

Regular keeper Jordan Archer was ruled out with a knee injury for a second consecutive game.

Stringer is hoping that keeper Jordan Archer will have recovered from his knee injury in time for the Vauxhall Motors game.

Stortford’s manager indicated that if Archer did not make it he would probably play Matt Gill in goal ahead of Aldi Haxhia.

JORDAN ARCHER (Bishop's Stortford) 14.04.2012 vs Vauxhall Motors (H) 2-0 (W) Conference North (Round 40)
Still out with a knee problem as Matt Gill carries on in goal.

Jordan Archer was ruled out with a knee injury which resulted in Blues boss Rod Stringer giving a home league debut to young keeper Matt Gill.

I thought our reserve keeper looked calm and on the ball today despite long spells of no action.

Now I'm in charge of goalkeeper selection, I'll probably leave Matt between the sticks for the rest of the season. The experience can only help him.

JORDAN ARCHER (Bishop's Stortford) 21.04.2012 vs Guiseley (A) 1-0 (W) Conference North (Round 41)
Back in goal after injury and produced a man of the match display against the team second in the table. This was also his 7th clean sheet in the league.

The visitors were thankful to a stunning save from on-loan Spurs keeper Jordan Archer deep into second-half injury-time.

From front to back, we were excellent today. Jordan for the saves.

Jordan pulled off some brilliant saves which had the Guisley fans talking about after the game.

The whole team played well today, with both Ali and Jordan being outstanding.

Thanks to some outstanding saves from Jordan they just couldn't get the ball in the net.

Guiseley fans have been very impressed with Alli and Jordan on the North forum, after their displays today.

Kane sounds like he is doing well, 8 goals in the championship in a few months is pretty good going I'd say. Possibility that he may make it as a lower half premiership striker.

Why a lower half prem striker? He is still very very young. Anyone who thinks we are going to bring through a real world class player at the age of 18 is deluded.

Get Coulibaly in the team. Now.

Why not, with Saha/Ade out yesterday either him or Lancaster should have been on the bench last night. At 1-0 down we would have had nothing to lose, and would have been more effective than GDS. Did he touch the ball?

I dont think his movement looked up to scratch when I've seen him play and movement tends to be one trait that is often very strong in young players. I'd love him to prove me wrong of course.

OSCAR JANSSON (Shamrock Rovers) 06.04.2012 vs St. Patrick's Athletic (A) 1-5 (L) League of Ireland (Round 6)
Heaviest defeat of the season and a poor performance by the young keeper.

Forrester received the ball in space and coolly lobbed the ball over the advancing Jansson to make it 3-0.

Jansson slipped as he tried to intercept the ball to allow Kelly to cross for Fagan to head into an empty net.

This is all Jansson's fault. He hasn't a fudging clue what he is doing and has left the entire Rovers' defence rattled and confused.

Game over. 3-0!! what the fudge was jansson doing there? He's fudgein shocking.

Kenny just has to make the right changes at half time ÔÇô starting with Jansson. We need more stability and confidence at the back.

Nothing jansson could do about that last goal shocking defending, getting caught on the left every time brennans not a left full.

Jansson is all over the place. Mad stuff. Take Jansson off. Just floundering. Useless.

Jansson seems like he was a last minute ring around clubs trying to find any stop gap measure. No way SK had scouted him thoroughly, more like we were happy to let our number 1 be decided on basis of "if he plays for Spurs he must be decent".

Jansson should never wear the Rovers jersey again. fudging jokeshop.

I think anyone trying to argue that Jansson wasn't directly responsible for (most of) the goals is missing the point. The fact is, he was like a rabbit in the headlights whenever the ball came near the penalty area, and that for me was where things started going wrong. The defenders had so little confidence in his ability to get anything right that the formation fell apart as they tried to over-compensate for him. A defender should never say: "ah leave it, the keeper will get it" ÔÇô but he should have a certain level of confidence in the keeper's ability. That was completely non-existant last night.

OSCAR JANSSON (Shamrock Rovers) 09.04.2012 vs SD Galway (A) 2-0 (W) EA Sports Cup (2nd Round)

OSCAR JANSSON (Shamrock Rovers) 13.04.2012 vs Dundalk (H) 6-0 (W) League of Ireland (Round 7)
Back in the starting line-up and got his 6th clean sheet of the season as he had very little to do in the game.

Nice to see Jansson kept a clean sheet after the abuse poeple said he took last week, did he have much to do?

Big decision by kenny to drop Ricer and to also stick with Oscar by the way.

Oscar , Oman and Sives may as well have sat in the stand......they had nothing to do.

Glad SK didn't overreact by dropping Oscar.

Was it twice oscar caught the ball in the air or was i dreaming.

OSCAR JANSSON (Shamrock Rovers) 16.04.2012 vs Derry City (H) 0-3 (L) Setanta Sports Cup (Semifinal, 1st Leg)
Was on the bench once again in a cup game with Reyaad Pieterse in his place, however Pieterse was sent off after 13 minutes and Jansson was called into action. He saved the resultant penalty but could not save the rebound. Had a good game.

After 13 minutes Patrick McEleney split the Hoops defence with a through ball and although the linesman flagged for an offside against Farren, play was waved on and McDaid knocked the ball past Pieterse and away from goal but went down although there looked like minimal contact. Referee Kelly produced a straight red card much to the dismay of Pieterse.

He dived to his right to save the kick but unfortunately Deery was quickest to react and he scored from the rebound.

McLaughlin tested Jansson with a dipping shot that the Hoops 'keeper did well to tip over.

One terrible decision when Finn (?) was fouled at the near post and he booked Jansson instead.

Oscar did a great performance. Oscar very unlucky with the peno.

Oscar another excellent peno save pity everyone else switched off.

Another good peno save for Oscar, absolutely criminal for nobody to be following it up though.

Though on the bright side oscar does seem to be getting a bit of confidence and he didnt deserve to let three in.

OSCAR JANSSON (Shamrock Rovers) 20.04.2012 vs Bray Wanderers (A) 2-2 (D) League of Ireland (Round 8)

Jansson made a decent save from Byrnes free-kick on the edge of the area.

Waters brought the best out of Oscar Jansson with the Swedish keeper getting down to save the effort on his line.

I thought Oscar was not great for the first Bray goal even allowing for the errors by others in the build up. His positioning was poor and he should not have allowed a shot to be driven across him from that angle.

I'm in London for the Blackburn game (a day early), so went to watch Millwall - Blackpool.

Quick report on Harry Kane:

He was presented with Millwall's Young Player of the Year prize prior to the game. Got a great reception from the fans, some even doing the "Yiddo, Yiddo, Yiddo" chant.

Played really well on the left of a front 3, although Keogh is definetly their main man (he had a great game and scored a lovely goal).

Harry reminded me of Pav quite a bit, although a Pav with interest and energy if that's possible! He made a couple of beautiful cross field passes, generally held the ball up well, had a snap shot in the first half that took a nick and deflected just wide, then scored a peach from just outside the box into the bottom corner to equalise.

The Millwall fans gave another rousing chorous of "Yiddo, Yiddo, Yiddo"!

Good game, well played Harry and glad I went.

I dont think his movement looked up to scratch when I've seen him play and movement tends to be one trait that is often very strong in young players. I'd love him to prove me wrong of course.

Personally, I think the only trait that tends to be fixed at an early age is technique. Other attributes can develop over time, including positioning, if they are prepared to be students of the game. Technical skills, however, really need to be taught from a very early age, which is the value of someone like Moniz working with the young age groups, for the same physical reasons that, for example, it's much easier to learn a musical instrument when you're a kid than an adult.

Kane was awarded the "managers young player of the year" award.
He has really taken off at Millwall and I think he should do another year of development there. His partnership with Keogh looks great and at the end of the season they were in Title winning form, with Kane assisting in that.
The fans have also taken to him really well, from what i've read.

I read something recently where there manager said he wanted his transfer deals done early this summer and he wanted to take kane on loan again next season. Think it would work out well and reminds me a little of the caulker sitaution where he improved quickly by playing lower league football. A full season for kane and then maybe a loan the following season in the prem like man u did with wellbeck and we could have a player on our hands.

People seem so quick to say young players will never make it but when i look at the improvement of livermore since he came into the team it seems to me that players can really step up a level by playing regular football. The attacking position is one that is hard to promote into the first team so maybe a couple more loans and regular football would work out best for kane rather then being a squad player.

I feel someone like townsend should come back in the summer and be our back up to bale playing 20-30 games for us next season, including europa league and league cup.

I wonder whether it is worth holding onto Kane and having as our fourth choice striker next season. It would certainly save us some money and give us an easier summer.

He's not going to get any better sitting on the bench though...
