The Academy, NextGen, U18 & U21 Premier League and On-Loan Thread

Who actually cares what his preferred formation is and what he played at previous clubs? Why don't we just wait until we have signed some players then we can discuss possible formations?

When the discussion started it was pertinent to the thread as it concerned the youth set up.

Everyone should read the link I posted above (and below). It's a really good read about training at our academy. Sounds like we've got a really well run set up. There really was no need to worry about our future under Harry, as the academy is very independent.

No at Chelsea he played 4123, the same change Mourinho made when moving from a basic 433 at Porto. Mourinho sat Makelele in front of the back 4 and 2 CM's ahead, whilst AVB used Mikel in the same role.

That's really splitting hairs. I guarantee you that AVB would call what he played at Chelsea 4-3-3. Almost all teams that play 4-3-3 have a defensive midfielder who sits deeper than the other two, AVB even talked about it in that interview in regard to 4-3-3.

Formations largely are splitting hairs. For example he described us as playing 442 with Dempsey earlier in the season, but I don't think many others recognized the formation as that. For the previous 2 seasons we played with VDV in front of a midfield 2, but he spent as much time dropping deeper as a holding player spends pushing higher. Yet what we played with VDV wouldn't be called a 433 by most. What formation did we play under Jol in 2005/6? It was always listed as a 442, but in reality Davids tucked in, Keane or Mido would drop out to the left etc.

Hopefully this link will work. It even touches on things our scouts look for. We really do have what used to be known as a "continental" set up.

Well, to discuss players we might be signing we need to know what formation we will be moving towards. It's all speculation at the moment. This seems the perfect place to speculate, a football forum.

I could see Luongo and maybe Pritchard going on a season long loan to QPR. I think Harry definitely rates Luongo from his time at Spurs and after all the stellar performances for Swindon he could make an impact for QPR. Will all the potential sales that QPR will make im sure Harry is looking at low cost buys and several loans to improve his odds of promotion.

That is a good shout and we see how well the Townsend loan has worked out for both clubs

Do you happen to know how many players we can loan to one club at a time? Would be great to see atleast 3 of our youth players in the championship at one club getting game time.

How was Pritchard at the weekend by the way? I haven't got round to checking

He was quite impressive. He started out on the left in a 4-4-2 and showed some great short-range passing when he came inside. He's got incredibly quick feet too, he won the free-kick that Posh scored from. He fared less well when showed out to the touchline though: he doesn't have the pace (or physique) to take on players. The match against Wednesday last weekend was also his first start, so Fergie junior must see something in him to start him in what was a must win game.

But he is tiny. And I mean really small. Sheffield Wednesday have supposedly one of the biggest teams in the division but he really looked undersized. He just turned 20 today so he's still got plenty of time to fill out. I think a full season out on loan would help him immensely in toughening him up.

He did well but, in truth, no one will see anything like the best of him playing at that level. His team mates won't consistently read his runs or anticipate his passes. The opposition will just batter him - increasingly so as he plays more and teams realise that he is a real threat with the ball at his feet.

For some players, a loan to a lower league club is the making of them. I'm not sure that it will be for Pritchard. I suspect that he's the kind of player who will only really shine when he's surrounded by other intelligent, technical players in a team that plays pass and move football. A loan to a club like Swansea could work. But they would be unlikely to take him until he had proved himself at a reasonably high level.

So his chance of making it at Spurs could come down to whether or not AVB is brave enough to give him a proper chance in the first team, without him having already proved himself in the Championship. I think he could be worth that punt.

Some have returned to their mother club.

Arsenal

Frimpong (Fulham)

Chamakh (West Ham)

Miyaichi (Wigan)

Chelsea:

Lukaku (West Brom)

Benayoun (West Ham)

Liverpool:

Carroll (West Ham)

Man Utd:

Fabio (QPR)

Henriquez (Wigan)

Tottenham:

Dawkins (Aston Villa)

Townsend (QPR)

Rose (Sunderland)

Kane (Norwich)

Just realised that Kane is on the bench for Leicester today. If Leicester win and Bolton draw Leicester are in the playoffs. Will Kane be involved?

Souleymane coulibaly ‏@souleymanec52

Yessssssss.I Scored My First Goal On The Last Minute And I Helped My Team.I'm Happy For My First Goal⚽⚽⚽

think Townsend could be huge for us next season. He's constantly active getting balls in for QPR and rarely loses it. Could see him cutting in from the left with Rose (who's also had a great season in the Prem) overlapping out wide.

I"m hoping Carroll earns his spot in the starting 11 but I'm guessing we'll sign somebody as a creative CM and he'll go out on loan to a Prem club like Swansea or Southampton.

Thinking we'll see a bit of:

Townsend ........... New ............. Bale
........ Dembele ........... Holtby
....................... Sandro
Rose ........ Verts ........ Kaboul ... Walker
........................ Lloris

with:

Carroll, Hudd, Falque, Livermore and a few others out on loan

I honestly think we don't have to invest greatly to challenge in the Champs league (if we even make it)

Luongo with a goal to put Swindon 1-0 up in the playoff first leg v Brentford.

But then gives away a penalty in the final minute for Brentford's equaliser.

Just caught Leicester's last minute winner at Forest on SSN. I can't be sure (I was only half paying attention) but it looked as though Harry Kane set it up with some really unselfish play. Had the chance to score himself but passed to a better placed team mate.

Turns out it wasn't Kane who made that pass after all. It was Chris Wood. My bad.

And Jonathan Obika scored Charlton's 3rd in their 4-1 win over Bristol.

That is 3 in not many games for JO. IMO he is a poacher but his confidence/self-belief is not good and that is bad for a striker. He is 23. Ian Wright (no confidence problems) was non-league IIRC at 23.

But it's not just this thread. Every other thread has a "AVBs preferred formation" discussion in it.
