The Academy, NextGen, U18 & U21 Premier League and On-Loan Thread

It seems that most of the players we've brought up to the first team recently have been through a PL loan first. Walker, Caulker, Naughton and now Rose and Townsend look likely to come back into the squad. The only exception is Carroll I suppose, but he's yet to start in the Premier League for us so not quite there yet.

Who do you guys think we'll send out on loan to the PL next season (if any)?

Could we see another loan deal for Rose? Surely there would be plenty of takers, if another player (Ekotto/new signing) is first choice it might be better for his development to get another full season of football somewhere else.

Kane didn't succeed at Norwich, could he get another PL loan next season?

Apart from Carroll I suppose Pritchard and Ceballos have been the stand out players at youth level that are in the right age group? Carroll has gotten games for England U21 now, he's shown himself in the EL for us and as a sub in the PL. Could a football playing PL side see him as useful? I was hoping Pritchard would do enough for Peterborough to get a few PL clubs interested, but his injury might have stopped that from happening. Ceballos might have to go out on a Championship loan first?

Anyone else? Hall? Fryers?

I would like to see Carroll go out on loan to a prem team and maybe a half and half loan for Pritchard in the championship and then in the prem like what we done with Walker.

Players i would like to see go out on loan

Falque - Prem
Ceballos - Prem
Carroll - Prem
Pritchard - Championship - Prem
Kane - Championship
Fryers - Championship

I would also like to see Luongo in the championship but by the sounds of it he could be staying at Swindon.

It would be interesting to know how many PL clubs have players on loan at other PL clubs? I doubt there are too many.

Some have returned to their mother club.

Arsenal

Frimpong (Fulham)

Chamakh (West Ham)

Miyaichi (Wigan)

Chelsea:

Lukaku (West Brom)

Benayoun (West Ham)

Liverpool:

Carroll (West Ham)

Man Utd:

Fabio (QPR)

Henriquez (Wigan)

Tottenham:

Dawkins (Aston Villa)

Townsend (QPR)

Rose (Sunderland)

Kane (Norwich)

United (Fabio to QPR), Chelsea (Lukaku to WBA), Arsenal (Miyaichi to Wigan) and Liverpool (Carroll to West Ham) were the ones I could find this season, might be some more. Chelsea also have Courtouis (sp?) and De Bruyne out on loan, easily players that could play in the PL.

United have some history of doing it, as does Arsenal.

Seems that most top teams look to find the right loan move for their youngsters in the Premiership. We've had several successful ones in recent seasons though with Walker, Naughton, Caulker Rose and Townsend all doing well. That's pretty rare I think.

Edit: Nevermind, Jordinho beat me to it :)

If you include lower divisions and abroad I wouldn't be surprised if it's more than 200 players.

So there's actually hardly any players 21 or under out on Premier League loans. I think it's a bit of a stretch to think we have 3 or 4 good enough for that kind've loan right now. Maybe if one or tear up the Championship with a solid loan first e.g Like Walker, Caulker etc then there's a possiblity.

I'd completely forgot he was there, is he even getting on the bench? He hasn't in the last two games but I suppose it could be an injury problem.

Fat Sam sharing Harry's philosophy: You can't have too many players.

West Ham have some Brazilian (I think) striker on loan as well, but apparently can't give him a game because they're all so important.

Er, AVB specifically said he played 4-3-3 with us against Emirates Marketing Project for the last 20, against Basel and against Everton in a post match interview.

Around 4:15 onwards.

Of course he's played 433 at times, that isn't the point. What is clear is that despite being happy to use a 433, he is, for the vast majority of games, not doing so. The fact he's changed to 433 at times, shows the option is there. So there are no excuses. He has chosen a different formation. The whole 433 thing is just yet another AVB based fallacy.

The whole AVB 433 thing is almost certainly a misnomer. He hasn't played it with Chelsea or with us.

:-k

I don't think this is a worthwhile discussion. You seem to renege on points made in your previous post, so we're just not going to get anywhere. We'll just wait and see how it goes next season.

I remember early in the season Luongo was often MOM for Ipswich and their fans were gushing over him. Unfortunately their team was playing poorly and the manager got sacked and he never got a look in after that. Pretty strange but just shows how some of these players loans can be doomed by circumstances outside their control.

You know exactly what I mean. I'm fully aware he's used 433 on rare occasions, but no more, in fact less than he's used 442. But it's clearly not been his default formation. You are trying to suggest he's got the whole club playing 433, as that is the way he wants to play. There is simply no evidence of this. Porto played 433 before he arrived, as did Academica.

Here are the formations from when he played Porto when in charge of Academica.

http://www.football-lineups.com/match/60846/

You'll see Porto playing very much "AVB'" 433 a year before he arrived! Someone like Gutterboy would try and make some argument based of players having different roles, but we'd all know this would be based on nothing as he wouldn't have watched Porto before or after AVB. This is why so much of what people expected from AVB at the start of the season hasn't happened. Not because AVB failed to get what he wanted out of the players, but because our fans made up their own expectations based on sod all.

Here are the lineups from a year before when AVB was still at Inter:

http://www.football-lineups.com/match/47620/

Basically AVB was a 433 fan, as most of Portugal seems to have been. He took over at clubs that largely played 433. So he played 433. Now he's taken over at a club that played 4231 or 442. He's mainly played those formations. But if you look at the top of the Prem, virtually all games are played 4231. If he did the same interview now that he did those years ago when he said he liked 433, he almost certainly now say he likes 4231. It's just the modern formation. It's Bayern, not Barca.

The point of all this rant, which seems to have nothing to with our youth teams, is that we wouldn't change to a 433 when we will play 4231.

To keep this thread more on track here is the link to the coaching report I mentioned in an earlier post. It was posted on some forums last season, but I'm not sure if it was posted here. It's quite an interesting read and gives a little insight into the coaching at our academy:

Southampton's U21s beat West Ham United 5-2 today.

This means the Saints move up to third in the Elite Group table and are set for a Semi-Final match against Manchester United as things stand.

But Liverpool still have two more games in which to win a point, although they are both tough ones away at Arsenal (tomorrow) & Manchester United (on Monday).

I could see Luongo and maybe Pritchard going on a season long loan to QPR. I think Harry definitely rates Luongo from his time at Spurs and after all the stellar performances for Swindon he could make an impact for QPR. Will all the potential sales that QPR will make im sure Harry is looking at low cost buys and several loans to improve his odds of promotion.

He didn't though. We played 433 plenty of times last season. There was even a coaching report posted online in which it specifically said we trained a 433 session in preparation for a game the following weekend.

The whole 433 thing is Gutterboyesque nonsense anyway. AVB said in an interview he was a 433 fan and played that way with Porto. But he also said dynamics are more important than formation. His mentor was Mourinho, who played a standard 3 in midfield in Portugal. Then when he went to Chelsea he hardly ever did that and would nearly always play a very defensive 451 or 4132. So this is probably why AVB hasn't come in and played 433 and probably has no intention of doing so. Also AVB gave that interview years ago now when 433 was the in vogue formation. But these days most good teams seem are playing a 4231. It's easily the most popular formation of the top 5 teams in the Prem. It seems all head coach's are thinking the same. Formations change. The whole AVB 433 thing is almost certainly a misnomer. He hasn't played it with Chelsea or with us.

He played it almost every game with Chelsea.

He played it almost every game with Chelsea.

No at Chelsea he played 4123, the same change Mourinho made when moving from a basic 433 at Porto. Mourinho sat Makelele in front of the back 4 and 2 CM's ahead, whilst AVB used Mikel in the same role.

Who actually cares what his preferred formation is and what he played at previous clubs? Why don't we just wait until we have signed some players then we can discuss possible formations?
